View Full Version : I've been having a lot of nightmares lately

I've been dealing with a bunch of nightmares recently, and I think it has to do with the level of stress I'm dealing with in real life.

One of the nightmares involves me taking our entire nest egg to Atlantic City and losing it on one spin of Roulette. This has happened repeatedly.

Another nightmare is me buying a house and getting fired the very next day. (There's precendent for this one, I bought a brand new truck and I was let go by my company 3 days later)

The third one, which there has been a lot of twists on, is seeing my loved ones getting hurt and me being powerless to do anything about it.

It's getting to the point where I don't like to sleep, and it's starting to affect my energy levels and getting into work and all that stuff. Not to the point where my boss notices it, but I do.

Is this something I should seek counseling for? It's really bothering me and I think it'll go away once we buy a house, but it still is in the back of my head.

I don't know that stress is a universal cause. I'm at probably the highest stress level of my life, and yet I'm sleeping like a baby. Go figure.

Dude your going to buy a place. That is a major investment. Of course your going to have it on your mind. It's a big risk...but one that if you think you can handle then you take the risk.

This risk will effect you and your family, that is why you have a family getting hurt and being powerless to do anything about it. I think that is normal.

Most of my bad dreams are from things that I don't think about much, things that just pop into my head and out. Then that night I have a dream about it. (Which explains why I never have sex dreams)

You need to relax a little. Not everything is the end of the world. But if it is really bothering you that much then go talk to someone about it, it might easy your mind and maybe the best thing for you.

Just if you do go for help..please..please don't start a talk show and speak about it every time your on the air...I know low blow to fezzy..SORRY:glurps:

I haven't been having nightmares, but I have been waking up very conscious of the dream I was having right before I woke up. Two days ago I had a dream where I saw my late dog Sputnik, then yesterday I had a dream that Heidi Klum was showing me around a golf course , like a host or something.

I think that kind of thing just goes in waves, where you're more conscious of your dreams/nightmares. If buying a house and money issues are in your waking mind more than usual, then those things are going to show up in your dreams.

Plus, for me it's only a nightmare if you make it a nightmare when you wake up, as opposed to finding it interesting or odd and moving on to your day.

One nightmare I had was very meta - I dreamt that something happened, I posted about being sad on RonFez.net that it was real, but the whole thing was a dream and everyone was mad at me and turned their backs on me. Freaked me out.

yea check into those, some of them can be nasty. also check to see if garbage pickup is a separate charge, they throw that in there sometimes.

I don't think it's going to be that Nasty... I mean, the HOA charge is only 40 bucks a month and it's to cover insurance and that's about it. I just wanted to make sure there aren't rules like "no parking on the street at night" or "must hand over your first born and stugots t-shirt".

I have some of the best anxiety and stress dreams... they usually surface in the form of a zombie dream or something equivalently horror movie-like. I used to consider them nightmares, but now I get a little upset when I wake up before I've had the chance to hack up a few zombies or murderers.

I've been having stress and anxiety dreams for as long as I can remember, even as a very young child. As an adult I realize it's stress and anxiety and that helps me fall asleep a little more easily.

Freitag, more exercise could help you lower your stress levels... I mean, I hate to even give advice here because I am notoriously over-stressed and high-strung, but exercise is pretty much the universal answer to very high stress levels. Maybe beating the shit out of a heavy-bag would help.

i always have the same nightmare...im back in college and I either have some kind of test or final to a class that Ive never been to. Like, it was on my schedule and i forgot and never been there. So i know im going to fail and it freaks me out

This nightmare usually ends when I wake up and I realize that I'm not in school anymore and have a great sigh in relief.

For awhile, when this dream was happening, I was able to get out of it by saying in my dream "hey idiot, you aren't in school anymore..this is your dream", but the last time I had it, I said that to myself, but then said back to myself "what are you talking about? You are in school..i am in school", so I couldn't convince myself of the truth.

So weird

Not so weird!! I get that one all the time too, with high school too. A friend of mine said she gets the same thing too. It's a dream about having no control or losing control, they SUCK! Especially since I had a semester in college where I stopped going and when I decided to make an appearance it was the day of the midterm. I made a quick exit and dropped out for the semester. So when I have that dream it's coming from a place of actually having had that happen to me! Extra freaky.

i dont think its ever "really" happened to me, but i've had a few classes that i felt like i didn't go to as much as i should and i felt guilty about it

i heard the "lose control" thing, but I think the dreams come from the fact that we lived a "school life" for most of our lives. Im 25 now, from ages 5 (preschool) to 21 I've had some kind of school. Thats a long long time. Now I have nothing. No homework, no studying...nothing like that. I think a lot of these dreams is just my mind getting used to not having this part of my life anymore

Maybe, or your control dreams will take the form of something else like not meeting a work deadline or something.

I also get these dreams in the form of not being able to keep my car on the road which just got worse when I had to drive for a living. I think it's the clearest example of dreaming about not having control I can think of.

I too have this dream. It's always a college algebra class, because I sucked in math in HS and college and it was one of those things I couldn't bullshit my way out of (like English, Creative Writing, or Women's Studies)

Sounds to me like you are not sleeping well at all.
Dreams usually happen in the REM state and that means with you having them a lot you are never in the deep restful state of sleep.
Maybe worth getting some sleep aids to get the restful kind of sleep to let go of some worries.

is that true? I always remember my dreams. I've always considered myself a "light sleeper", but I cut back on my caffeine (i only drink on weekends) and i thought my sleeping got a lot better. but i still remember my dreams all the time

well, I think the dreams actually occur during all stages of sleep, it's just that the REM stage is lighter and that's why most are able to remember them. I am no expert on it, but it's just what I remember reading a while back

i remember them right when I wake up...and I think I have that "internal alarm" thing that Kramer has, cuz I usually wake up like 5-15mins before my alarm...so maybe its just me waking up and hold onto my last dreams I remember, as opposed to being in a deep sleep and then waking up suddenly from an alarm clock.

I usually have my most vivid dreams when im drunk, that might be because Im constantly waking up due to dehydration and the need for urination..all that fun stuff

Having PTSD, nightmares are a second nature but the medications I take are of great hope.

One thing though, as some have said the stress level can make nightmares happen or make them worse. Second, alcohol can make the nightmares worse too.

I could've told you that.

But he's had less than ideal sleep habits since we've known each other, so I am not surprised that stress is impacting them now.

I like LaBoob's idea of getting more exercise to help alleviate the stress. (It usually works for me.)

I agree, after my separation from my ex hubby and all the stress with that and trying to get divorced I was a mess. Swimming was one of the best sports for me to get relief.
Not only was it exercise, but being in the pool and swimming by myself with the head halfway under water... swimming fast and pushing my limits or floating for a bit... I felt like in a bubble, it was very relaxing and my mind kind of aired out a lot of worries and concerns.

I think Katja makes a great point about needing the deep sleep because when you combine that with LaBoobs point that getting more exercise would be helpful, the equals getting more exercise increases your chances of getting deeper sleep, which in my book is true....

i have never had a good dream, if i have i def have not remembered one, I do have nightmares and I have them if not every night, every other night at least...some are nightmares involving embarrassment or failure, but most are of my dreams are me trying to defend someone (often my family members) but the people i am trying to help do not even want to help themselves, and somehow i am either shot or stabbed etc....i have a few reoccurring dreams and i have very frequent dreams about all of my teeth somehow getting mangled...
every time i wake up i vividly remember them, and i even have discomfort in the places that my have been affected in my dreams

when i exercise and keep a packed schedule, being busy sun up to sun down hardcore, i konk out hard and it seems i do not have dreams as often....
recently i have not been exercising and i have been very stressed out with my life and my family and of course the dreams came back harder then ever....but things took a drastic turn up for me yesterday and i was very active yesterday throughout the day...and surprise! no dreams last night...hopefully its a pattern....(although since this has been a big part of my life since as long as i can remember, and i am so used to it, i would actually miss my scary dreams if i never got anymore)

i think your stress levels, fears and anxiety can be a main contributor but to combat those things i think exercise leading into a deep sleep is your best remedy...

I've been sleeping like complete dog shit lately myself. Actually, I think dog shit does a great job sleeping. Sorry for that dig, dog shit. 'Twas unfounded.

For me, bad dreams usually come around when I've either gone to bed too late, ate something before bed, have a really really full bladder, or a guilty conscience about something.

Recently I had just broken up with someone, went to a bar, drank 'till closing time, then got home around 7am. I proceeded to have this horrifically cheesy and predictable yet really claustrophobic zombie apocalypse nightmare. We were all in some Charlie Brown's Steakhouse/office park and knew zombies were on their way over. It was disgusting and terrifying and when I woke up I didn't want to go back to sleep. I didn't get to kill any zombies, and I wanted my $10 back.

So I guess the advice I give ya is this: take a really deep piss before you go to bed, temporarily absolve yourself of guilt and responsibility (prayer at bedtime might work towards this purpose?), go to bed at a decent hour, and sleep about 4 hours after your last meal. If you can switch off before bed, that might do it. Do you go to bed thinking about buying the house or something?

Oh and exercise is also a good idea.
