iphone going to verizon...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-06-29/rim-falls-to-lowest-level-in-year-as-iphone-heads-to-verizon.html

Think that makes my choice of switching to verizon(been with t-mobile since they were voicestream) even easier. I stream the xm app all day long for ron/fez with my blackberry so I am a little stand offish for going with a carrier\without a cheap data plan. Is 200MB/month a enough if your streaming radio and just surfing inet.

streaming through the XM app takes up a ton of bandwidth. I'm pretty sure that you can hit 50-100 MB a day in streaming easy. But for a smartphone, on verizon, it's $30 a month, unlimited bandwidth. I pay for my minutes, a texting package, the Mexi sucks package, and a $30 smartphone fee. No other charges.

I can run a test if you'd like, just to give you an idea what we're dealing with.

I stream music for the ONA show, then i use the Ustream app, thanks to rhino, for the ron and fez show.

So a solid 8 hours a day streaming.

These are my data usage stats for the past week. I've streamed XM over 3G for maybe about 5 hours, streamed a 20 min video from my home computer and some web use. Not a lot of 3G usage this past week and I'm already over 200mb

Damn thanks for the feedback guys. I really was unsure if streaming XM really used that much data. Unlimited data plan seems like a must for me.

Even if verizon doesn't end up getting Iphone I am going to go with the newest addition of droid or htc and make the switch as soon as my t-mobile contract is up in a month or two.

Yeah you can't go wrong with a unlimited data plan. It dosent' matter what type of smart phone it is. If you plan on using it to stream stuff there is a good chance you are going to use the data.

Don't worry about the apple care until after 1 year. You get 1 year when you buy the phone. No need to buy it until the 1st year is almost up. Forget about AT&T's insurance there are 3rd party options out there that charge you about $100 a year with a $50 deductible if your phone get's lost, stolen or breaks you just send them $50 and your covered.

I'll link you later to those 3rd party sites I don't have the links handy now. But defiantly hold off on AT&T and wait until your first year of coverage is almost up to buy apple care.

The only advantage to buying apple care in the first year is that you get more then the initial 90 days phone support from apple, That's it. You still are covered for hardware support for 1 year.

That $11.99/mo insurance is a total ripoff. Even if the phone is damaged accidentally, or gets liquid damage, neither of which is covered by Apple Care, a replacement phone costs $199, regardless of type of phone or the damage. So you'll rather quickly pay more for that insurance than the cost of a replacement. If it covers loss and theft, it might be a slightly better deal, but I'm not sure it does.

The other thing about Apple Care is that it does cover a battery replacement, which is $79 without it. So have the battery replaced once while you've got it, and you've saved $10 right there.

And waiting until the year out just screws you. It's 2 years from the date of purchase of the phone, regardless of when you buy it. It's not 2 more years from the purchase of Apple Care.

It's pointless to buy apple care if you buy a new phone. When you buy the phone you get 1 year of hardware coverage and 90 day phone support. When you add apple care to that it extends your hardware coverage and the phone support. You might as well wait until that 1st year is almost up to buy apple care again. That's what I did with my first iPhone and the iPhone 3G. If you buy your phone July 1st you have a 1 year coverage then you can go buy the apple care on June 30th and your apple care will take effect the day you purchased apple care. The only catch is you have to buy it before your original 1 year coverage runs out.

Damn apple pulled it quick but it still works now I have tethering on my iPhone 4 with unlimited data. If I wanted to pay for tethering I would have had to drop the unlimited data then signed up for the tethering which is 35 a month on top of the tiered data plans they offer now.

Yeah I was lucky enough to get grandfathered in with the unlimited data plan. It definitely uses lots of data. It's a great app and watching a movie or tv show on the iPhone 4 isn't that bad. I watched a few episodes of Family Guy over 3G and there wasn't that long of a buffer and the quality of the stream was actually good.

It won't be about the iPhone per se, but Apple is having an event of some sort on Wednesday, 9/1, based on the theme of music. This is traditionally the event where we see new iPods, but there will be announcements that will probably include everything running iOS, so the iPhone will be affected. So here's my guesses as to what we'll see, based on the rumors I've heard that don't seem like total bullshit:

1. New iPod Touch. This one seems pretty obvious. It will probably have the same form factor as the iPhone 4, and probably a camera as well. Probably not larger storage capacity: 128GB of flash RAM is still pretty damn expensive, and I think Apple will probably want to keep the price about the same. It will definitely have the Retina Display the iPhone 4 does (and god damn do I want that now that the Netflix app is out)

2. New iPod Nano. There's a rumor that the iPod Nano will be redesigned to lose the touch wheel, and be a touchscreen like the iPhone and iPod Touch. This makes sense: I think Apple wants to bring all its mobile devices into the iOS 4 fold. I don't know if it would fully have the ability to run apps, though. The very small screen size would greatly limit what it could do.

3. No change for iPod Classic. I think, eventually, this one's going away, but not until flash RAMs' price goes down to the point a 128GB or even 256GB or bigger iPod Touch is cost effective. But for now, there's still a need for the iPod Classic as the device you just gotta have if you want to carry around every Jonas Brothers bootleg you own. And if you're like me, that's a shitload of music.

4. iOS 4 will be made available for the iPad. Even if none of the other stuff they announce is immediately available, they throw one bone out there, and I think this is it.

5. New Apple TV. I think there's going to be a new version of the Apple TV, because I think Apple wants to get into the set-top box market in a big way, and the current Apple TV isn't cutting it. They want a device that actually runs iOS 4. A cool thing about this is that it would basically get them into console gaming with no extra effort, so if it doesn't work out, they haven't lost anything. Which brings me to my final prediction, which will be one that will affect iPhone users....

6. Wireless synching. It sounds like they're going to allow you to sync your devices wirelessly. I'm not quite sure what that means: I'd personally love to be able to put my entire iTunes library up int he cloud so it could be streamable anywhere, but that's probably not going to happen. But if I can be spared having to always plug my iPhone in to add new content, if it can be pushed across to my phone the same way that MobileMe pushes an iCal event across, that would be pretty badass. It would be nice if it were free, but adding it to the services that MobileMe offers would make sense too.

Space Edge
08-31-2010, 08:33 PM
they are streaming the event live only on iOS devices and Macs that have Quicktime X. Maybe that means they will announce some sort of cloud streaming.

Yeah I think I might pick one up for my mother. She is looking for a set top box to stream Netflix and I suggested a cheap XBOX 360 arcade unit. But this would be better if they bring Netflix streaming to it.

If you want to watch but don't have a mac or iOS device here is a workaround. If you can't watch live I'm sure they will post a video later on in the day.

Couple of hours from the big event, some fresh new rumors:

1. The 4th generation iPod Touch is said to be thinner than the current ones; some say its factor resembles the edges of the display of a Macbook Pro. Even with that, though, it's said to have a camera. And, more intriguingly, the rumor that Apple will offer a version with 3G access, similar to that on the iPad, is hanging around.

2. While the Apple TV will be announced today, it will not be immediately available. What will also be announced today, however, will be 99 cent rentals of TV shows, starting with Fox and ABC shows. Not sure how that will work: if it's 99 cents to watch one episode a couple of days, I'm not interested, but if it's 99 cents to watch all episodes within a given time frame (like a month's worth of episodes), then we might be talking.

We'll see at 1PM EDT, I guess.

That's an old trick but very useful here is a good article that has a bunch of other tricks including a way to invert the colors on the phone. Very useful for use in low light

Change the Display to White on Black

This one falls under the iPhone’s Accessibility features as it offers a high contrast, more easy-to-view display, but it can also be employed just to make your phone look a little different.

To make the change, head to “Settings,” then “General,” then “Accessibility” and then toggle “White on Black” to “On.”

The colors on your phone’s display are now inverted, however, the Apple magic that makes this happen must have something to do with the phone’s display, rather than a software change, as you can’t export screen grabs showing this setting. To see the effect in action, you’ll have to make do with our real-life photos.
