Since the ham n'eggers who own Blackberries have a thread, I thought I'd start one for those of us who own the almighty Jesus Phone. So whaddya think? Here's some possible topics for discussion:
What apps do you have and recommend?
Have you gotten the G3 yet? If so, are you experiencing any trouble, or is it OK for you?
Do you have a subscription to Mobile Me? Whaddya think?
Found any good iPhone porn sites yet?
Just have at it. Just remember to always bow in the direction of Cupertino when you use your phone.

I will be watching this thread. One of my dissapointments with my blackberry is the extreme difficulty in trying to access the web. Does the iPhone access the web as easily as depicted in the commercials? Is there hang up's or spinning hourglasses? Can you view youtube or go on ebay or this board? Do the viewed videos from sites like youtube jump and sputter or are they as if you were watching from home?

I have the older IPhone, and I like it quite a bit. AT&T's coverage isn't the absolute best, but it works well enough.
The newest version of the operating system has caused trouble with my email, though. Sometimes the mail just doesn't want to work, and I have to power down and restart the whole phone.
Overall, I have no complaints. Phone, Ipod, email, web in one device I can stick in my pocket? That's what I was looking for.
About 3G: I've heard from friends that the 3G is fast - like broadband v. dialup fast - but the problem is connecting to the network. I try to use mobile sites as much as possible and I don't have any problem loading them. It's not as fast as my broadband is at home but I think that's an unreasonable expectation. Whenever I can I get on a WIFI network, and that's fast. Living in New York my phone is always picking up open WIFI spots. It happens more often than you would think.

I have a 3G and am very happy with it. My only complaint is I have had two freeze-ups. One was quick but the other lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes. I was downloading the facebook application when it just stuck. I was traveling so I couldn't call anyone, check e-mail, or communicate at all until it just mysteriously unstuck after three hours.

i hate this when norton goes off on it (not that you have), so here's my two cents. att has fine cell coverage. any issues you have are i-phone related. talk to jobs and his product, not att.

I got my iPhone 3G about 2 weeks ago, and it's perfectly fine. Firmware update 2.0.2 supposedly fixes some of the connectivity issues. Basically, it has to do with the chipset originally not being quite sensitive enough and dropping the G3 signal before it should. My G3 signal is strong and steady and significantly faster than EDGE; for example, I can reliably stream audio at a fairly high bitrate now, where I couldn't on EDGE.
So I'm not so sure that it is the iPhone. I think AT&T's gotten a pass on this that they shouldn't have.

so you updated the iphone's firmware, but the prob wasn't the iphone? huh? the chipset isn't an iphone issue?

It is, but it may be one that can be dealt with with a firmware upgrade, not a full hardware recall.
I haven't seen any comprehensive studies yet comparing the iPhone's performance on a G3 network to that of other G3 phones. My suspicion of what's going on is that AT&T's G3 network isn't quite ready for the influx of additional traffic the iPhone is giving it. This is the first "smartphone" that people will be using heavily on that network. My guess is that the typical iPhone user is going to be doing a lot more bandwidth-heavy use than Blackberry users have been, because it's sold as a phone that you can do just about anything you want to on the 'Net (as long as it doesn't require Flash.) So this is the phone that exposes the weaknesses in the system.
I'm just saying that in my particular case, my iPhone G3 is giving me what it is advertised as doing. I just hope this doesn't turn into an Apple vs. AT&T pissing contest: "The problem is that your network sucks." "No, the problem is that your phone is fucked up." It might be a little from column A, a little from column B. And I hope both companies do what they need to do to fix it.

I had the original iPhone and about a month ago I went to upgrade to a 3G. I got the phone and used it for a five days with no problem. Then one night I was playing around with it and set it down on the table and came back ten minuets later and the thing was dead. I tried doing a reset and nothing happened same with letting it charge overnight. Luckily I was able to take it back to the apple store and they replaced it with a brand new one for free.
That was the only problem I have had with the iPhone otherwise I love the thing.

In my opinion the iPhone is great for web browsing and viewing youtube videos. The phone comes with Safari which is Apples Web browser, that means you can visit most websites. I haven't had a problem with youtube videos at all the only thing I can't help you with is comparing it to your blackberry since I never had one.
As far as speed goes right now I am sitting in a room in my house where I only get like 1bar of service and with the 3G I still get a speed of 543K per second. Using wifi I get a speed of 2386K per second. Assuming I had full service with the 3G network where I am currently sitting the speed is pretty fast.

I use my Iphone (original) at work all the time to check this site, and many others,
use maps, listen to pandora, and watch movies, and youtube.
I think the atandt service is great. I get reception in places sprint didnt.
My only big complaint is if online for long periods, the battery goes quickly.
But its better than not being able to go online at all.

What I like about browsing on the iPhone as opposed to some of the other phones I've tried is that, usually, you're looking at the actual site, not some neutered "mobile" version. It's easy to scroll around the page with finger swipes, and you can magnify what you want to read by tapping on the frame, or doing the "sweep" motion to magnify the text.
Now, this can cause problems on some sites, but it usually works fine.

An official XM app is supposed to be on the way, but who knows when it'll be here. It looks like this solution requires using jailbreak apps, and I haven't really wanted to fuck with jailbreaking since 2.0 came out.
"I Am Rich" gets in the App Store, but this doesn't. WTF.

I tried playing around with that link and it seems like it was meant for the first gen iPhone, I'm not sure if it required jail breaking the phone.
The I am rich app got yanked from the App store, I have seen it on a few torrent sites I think I might just download it to say hey I have it.

You can release an app on the store utilizing someone else's service without their permission. All the jailbreak apps are hacks and have no rules.

Yeah, I know, but the rules seem to be a bit arbitrary. I don't think there's ever been an explanation for why BoxOffice was taken down, for example. And there's NetShare, the tethering software, that got released and pulled within 2 hours. And, meanwhile, I Am Rich actually does make it into the site.
I mean, I do prefer this to the willy-nilly, "Damn, I hope this works and doesn't crash my iPhone and I have to come up with some excuse to get Apple to cover it under my warranty" mess jailbreaking could be. But I also think there are signs Apple didn't quite expect this sort of reaction to it.

FYI if you signed up for a free trial of Mobile Me when you purchased your iPhone they have extended the trial because of the problems they have been having with it.
Original iPhone owner right here, love the shit out of my phone. I've been thinking about upgrading to a 3G in the near future, but not yet.
I would love an XM app, but it seems like we have to wait until Mel and the rest of the big wigs get the combined company up and running before we get any type of Satellite Radio app without Jailbreaking, which I did before the 2.0 update, and it was OK, but it made me nervous that I'd screw up my phone, so I quickly restored, and am running 2.0.2 software, and the phone runs amazingly.

The other thing that would concern me is battery life. If the app has to convert the audio to a compatible form itself, that devours battery life. If it's getting the audio in a compatible form from the beginning, it's not so much of a problem.
An official app might do the conversion at the server. Other ones, not so much.

Some random tips to improve battery life. These are all based on the Options screen in firmware version 2.0.2, so you might have different things if you haven't upgraded.
1. Wi-Fi: Turn off entirely if you never use Wi-Fi. If you do, and you use it in the same spots all the time (like, for example, at home, or maybe at a Starbucks near you or something), set "Ask To Join Networks" to Off. That will keep it from scanning for new networks.
2. "Fetch New Data": Turn off Pushing if you don't have MobileMe, or you aren't on an Exchange server that sends email, contacts, and calendar entries to you. For "Fetching", you might want to either drop down to hourly, or even check for email manually, if you don't need to check that often.
3. Under "General": Turn off Bluetooth if you are not using a headset. From the "Network" choice, turn off "Enable 3G" if you will be in an area where it's not available for an extended time. Turn off Location Services if you won't be using GPS (though I don't think it uses that much battery life.)
Hope this helps.

Is anyone a member of Mobile me aka .mac or has taken the free 60 day trial of it ? I to advantage of the free 60 day trial and since they have been having problems with it they extended the free 60 day trial to existing members to a to a 90 day free trial. So far I like who Mobile me works but it seems like they have a few bugs that they have yet to worked out. Hopefully they will extend the trail for longer if it dosent' work right.
Quesion for anyone that used .mac were there many problems with it as there are problems with MobileMe ?

It works fine for me, but I don't know if it's worth the cost for me or not. I do like that in Vista, you can directly map your MobileMe drive as a network drive. (Of course, you can do this in Mac OS, and you can do it in XP, though indirectly through a third party software program.)
I'll have to decide if I want to keep it or not. I might.

Oh, by the way, part of today's announcement on iPods was that firmware version 2.1 is coming soon. It's supposed to have further fixes for G3 connectivity, better power management to extend battery life, improved GPS functionality (making turn-by-turn navigation possible), and security fixes, among other things. Should be out Friday.

The big issue is connectivity to the g3 network. For some users, this is leading to slow internet, falling back to EDGE, or even dropped calls.
Apple has already released one software fix for it, and is set to release another.
I haven't had any of those issues with mine, and I recommend it without reservation. However, Wired did a big map where they asked people to do speed tests on their iPhones and post the results. You might want to check that to see how it's doing where you are.

There are also places in the US where the 3G networks is not avalable. Last month I had to drive from Florida to New York and back and there were a few places that 3G didn't work. Since you live in NYC fezident you shouldn't have a problem with 3G network coverage.

Yeah, 3G is pretty much limited to cities at this point.
I'm hopeful that the iPhone and other G3-enabled phones will put pressure on to expand and improve 3G networks, but we'll see.

I just use a cheap Motorola I bought. It works fine.
iPhones do not support stereo bluetooth, so if you're thinking of buying bluetooth headphones for it, don't. They won't work (actually, they will, but just as a mono headset.)
I highly recommend you get a Bluetooth headset if you're getting an iPhone. The design makes it quite uncomfortable to hold up to your ear for more than a couple of minutes.

Can you get on the Internet properly? Are calls coming in OK?
If not, I'd turn off 3G while you're there. My bet would be that you're on the fringe of 3G coverage, and it's not consistent. But it's enough for the iPhone to connect to it, even though it sucks. You're better off with a consistent EDGE connection under those circumstances.
If everything else is working, my bet would be MobileMe server issues, nothing with your phone.
I just remembered that I was having trouble getting some new calendar entries to sync up with my iPhone, and when I went in and turned off syncing and turned it back on, that seemed to work. Who knows. MobileMe still seems to be having trouble.

Another thing I'd point out is that the iPhone isn't just a cell phone; it's pretty much a little tiny Mac, and like a computer, it needs to be rebooted occasionally. So if you've had it on for a while, and it's starting to do weird shit, shut it down completely for a little while.

I have done most of the things you have suggested even turning off the phone for a little while and still nothing. I am leaving NY and heading back to Florida sometime this weekend when I get home I think I'll take both the iPhone and my Macbook Pro to the Apple store and see if they can help me out. Also I think I will call up Apple's 800 number and bitch about the mobile me service and hopefully they will extend my mobile me trial again. About a month ago I got a random email from them saying they were extending it for another 60 days for free because of all the problems they have been having. There is a good chance that I will subscribe to mobile me when the trial is up if they fix all the bugs and it works like they say it supposed to work.

Couple of news items: if you got a G3 iPhone, you got one of these new little tiny chargers. Apple is recalling them due to a risk that the prongs on them could break and lead to electric shock. Story here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20080918/tc_zd/232182;_ylt=At7VvRghuWRysryylmWDBVwjtBAF
Here's an interesting site you can check out: http://www.apptism.com/ It's a site that collects news on all iPhone apps out there -- including ones that Apple has not yet approved for the App Store, or has even pulled out of the store. It's easier to navigate than digging through the pages in iTunes. More about it here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20080919/tc_zd/232225;_ylt=AkaLtaPSP_C0rf0HdqjQWk2SxLEF

I just got this email from Apple today they are recalling the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter (The wall charger)
Today Apple announced the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange program.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.
The ultracompact USB power adapters were supplied with every iPhone 3G sold in the following countries, and may also have been purchased separately as an accessory:
* US
* Japan
* Canada
* Mexico
* Several Latin American countries (click here for a detailed list of countries)
Note: Apple USB power adapters supplied with original iPhones or supplied with iPhone 3G units sold in other countries are not affected.
Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge.
Users with ultracompact power adapters should immediately stop using them until they exchange them for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter.
In the meantime, they should charge their iPhone 3G by connecting it to their computer with the USB cable that came with their iPhone or by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or with a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.
Identifying your adapter
If you purchased an iPhone 3G in any of the countries listed above, you received the ultracompact USB adapter.
Compare your USB power adapter to the pictures below. If it matches, we will provide a replacement adapter in exchange for your current one.
If you have purchased this ultracompact adapter as a standalone accessory, you may also exchange it for a new one.
Replacement adapters have a single green dot on the bottom, like this:
If you have an ultracompact adapter with a green dot on the bottom, you already have a new, redesigned adapter and do not need to participate in this exchange program.
The Exchange Process
Replacement adapters will be available starting Friday, October 10, 2008.
There are two ways to exchange your current ultracompact Apple USB power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter.
* Order a replacement adapter via the web. These replacement adapters will ship within three weeks of your order, starting on Friday, October 10.
* Exchange your adapter at an Apple Retail Store starting on October 10.
We'll need to collect your iPhone 3G's serial number as part of the exchange process.
If you apply via the web, you will also need to provide your name and address so that we can send you a new adapter along with a shipment box so that you can return the affected adapter to Apple.
If you visit an Apple Retail Store, you need to bring your affected adapter(s) and your iPhone 3G(s) with you to complete the exchange process.
If you live in Latin America, we will announce the appropriate exchange program information before October 10.
Thank you for your cooperation with this exchange program, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Hey, a little heads-up here: if you were using Last.fm, and were pissed that it no longer worked with version 2.1 of the iPhone/iPod Touch firmware, your wait is over. Last.fm has officially released version 2.0 of their software, which does work with the new firmware.
Plus, it has a snazzy new interface.

What exactly does last.fm do on an iphone? I use the AOL radio app and I love it, because I'm a Chicago guy at heart and I can walk the streets of New York listening to Chicago sports radio - plus I can hear the live Bears broadcast on sundays, at least until the NFL puts the kibosh on it. The only thing about it, it uses a LOT of battery.
Also, is there an app for listening to XM?

Last.fm plays the radio stations you get in the computer application, including the "Recommendation" and "My Neighborhood" stations, and allows you to start new stations based on an artist, song, or tag.
The original version, which came out before the SDK and that you had to "jailbreak" your iPhone to use, actually did scrobble tracks you played as well, but Apple has forbidden multi-threading apps with the SDK, so it doesn't do that anymore. That kind of annoys me. Apple made the decision to preserve battery life, but what it ends up doing is that if you want to, say, check your mail while you're listening to Last.fm, you have to end the Last.fm app first. Which stinks. It might be cool if they could set it up to allow multithreading if the iPhone is on a charger or battery life is more than, say, 50% or something.
There was talk of an official XM app pre-merger, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while. I wonder if now they're working on making it play Sirius stations too. But it's supposed to be on the way. If you jailbreak your phone, you can do it now, but I'd just wait.

Tap the "Settings" button on the main page, then choose "Mail, Contacts, Calendars". From there, you should see a list of all your mail accounts. Tap on the ones you want to get rid of, then tap the "Delete Account" button in the next window.

My guess is that you need to refresh the phone, reinstalling the firmware. Run update to get the newest one. Also, be sure to back everything up.
Did you download them on your phone or in iTunes? I've heard suspicions that the process of installing them directly to the phone is buggy.

I currently have an 40 GB iPod and it has a lot of music on it. I thought it would be nice to have a lot of music/movies/TV etc on the iPhone, since being an ipod is one of it's three main functions (Steve Jobs kept saying "a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device" when he introduced it) And I wouldn't actually use it as a phone as much as I would use the other functions.
My current iPod is about 1/2 full. It's a 4 year old one, so no video, just audio. 16 GB is a lot and I could live with that but 32 GB or more would be great.

I was pointed to this thread from Apple's discussion boards by Fark: a woman's husband appears to have discovered a really bad new bug in the iPhone. Apparently, at random, it'll send pics of you spanking it to women.
Please help! I took my husband's i-phone and found a raunchy picture of him attached to an e-mail to a woman in his sent e-mail file (a Yahoo account). When I approached him about this (I think that he is cheating on me) he admitted that he took the picture but says that he never sent it to anyone. He claims that he went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store and they told him that it is an i-phone glitch: that photos sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer!
The suggested workaround for this issue: come up with a better excuse for why you send some cooze a pic of your junk.
Enjoy the hijinks here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1786497

Though it had been rumored it was close, firmware version 2.2 just sort of, well, appeared today. So what goodies did Apple give us?
To me, the biggest thing, by far, is that podcasts are finally completely integrated into the software itself. You can get new episodes of your podcasts directly on your phone now. You can either update the ones you subscribe to now, or even subscribe to new ones. This is actually a really cool addition, and one that's much needed.
On maps, Google Street Views has been integrated into the program, so, if available, you can go down to street level and look around and even "walk" through the neighborhood. I actually have the building where the buddays do the show on my screen right now. It also overlays transit info on the map.
Those are the two big functionality additions: there's also a lot of fixes to stability, call reliablillity, etc. You should be getting an email about this. My iPhone does seem to be running faster now after the update, but that might be because it got a restart as part of the process. We'll see.
Anyway, go get it. It's cool.

A few more thoughts on 2.2: if you're on any screen past the first home screen, hitting the Home button again takes you back to the first page, which is kind of nice. Not a big deal, but nice.
There have been some complaints about the reorganization of the Safari screen, in particular how the address and Google search boxes are now on the same line instead of separate lines. I can see some problems with it, sure, in that you can no longer read the URL unless it's extremely short, but I think the extra space this frees up on the screen makes it worth it. So it's kind of a wash to me.
I'm definitely getting improved performance both on calls and overall usage after this. 2.1 fixed some of the big problems with crashing/freezing, but 2.2 improves it even more.
A complaint about the new integrated podcast abiilty: it will not update a podcast you are subscribed to if it doesn't already have any episodes on your iPhone. So if you've got one, and you've listened to all the episodes and a sync with iTunes has removed that podcast entirely from your iPhone, you're not going to get new episodes until you sync with iTunes again. So this is not a substitute for managing your podcasts. You'll still need iTunes.
Overall, though, really good, and you should upgrade if you haven't already.

I have a couple of apps that won't work with this upgrade. I'm sure that it's a matter of time before that's fixed.
Simplify Media also has an update that allows Last.FM scrobbing of what you play. If you don't know about that program, Simplify Media allows you to directly access music files on not only your own computer but your "friends". I no longer have to carry both my 32-gig iTouch and my 160-gig classic.
There are also rumors that the XM/Sirius Starplayr app is days away from release.

Edited to add
So what can you do with the Slacker iPhone app? A lot actually:
* Free music library featuring millions of songs
* High-quality stereo playback from any wireless connection
* Over 100 professionally programmed genre stations
* Create custom artist stations
* Fine tune stations to play more of the music you like
* View artist biographies and photos
* View album art and reviews
* "Peek Ahead" artist and album preview
* Pause and skip songs
* Rate songs as favorites
* Ban the songs and artists you don't like
All for free, on your iPhone. The definition of "radio" is changing right before our eyes. And listeners know this.
One review on iTunes calls the Slacker iPhone app the "first killer radio app... not only does the Slacker app set the bar, but it changes things completely." Another reviewer says that "words cannot express how awesome this app is," while yet another states that "SiriusXM is in trouble."

Hey, thinking of spending the $100 for a MobileMe subscription so you can sync your calendars and contacts wirelessly? Well, don't. Go here instead: http://www.nuevasync.com/
This handy dandy site will sync the calendar and contacts on your iPhone with Google's calendar and/or contacts, or Plaxo's contact service. Basically, it works through an Exchange server you connect up to.
In my use of it so far, it actually seems to be faster than MobileMe was for me. And it's $100 cheaper too.
There are other features of MobileMe you can get for free too. Microsoft offers 20GB of online file storage at http://skydrive.live.com . It's a really bad interface -- if you don't use IE, you can't put in more than 1 or 2 files at a time -- but, hell, it's free. And the rumors that Google is reading GDrive are getting louder and louder.
So, yeah, don't pay for MobileMe, unless you absolutely must have it.

My connections have been rock solid since the 2.1 and then 2.2 firmware upgrades. At this point, whatever was going on with the iPhone to cause connection issues seems to have been fixed, and if there's still trouble, it's AT&T, not the iPhone.
Oh, by the way, this is cool: a rumor says that version 3.0 of the firmware, which will probably coincide with the new iPhone coming out this summer, will allow all iPhones to run background processes. On the existing models, it'll probably be limited to 2 or maybe 3 apps, but that would be enough for me; as long as I could, say, jump out of Pandora to check my email or something. As far as I'm concerned, being able to run background processes is the only compelling reason left to jailbreak your iPhone, and this would pretty much end any legitimate reason to do it. More here:

I wonder if they left a MobileMe subscription -- or an Exchange server -- on the phone, and the phone re-synced to get them back. Go under Mail, Contacts, Calendars and make sure there's not an account there that you didn't put there.
Why this concerns me is that if their address book is syncing to your phone -- yours is syncing to theirs. If they sold their iPhone because they were switching to a Blackberry or something like that, this might not be a big deal, but your iPhone could indeed be sending your shit back to them.

nothing there but my email account. also the contacts are all mine. but, the fact that there as an account set up with itunes does show it's not a new phone, right? and i wouldn't care, i just want them to be honest and not charge me the new price. i want either a completely new phone or to pay the lower refurb price. i'd take either. and the guy opened the box in front of us, so they can't try to pull any "we started to set it up for someone else and then they didn't buy it."
i also read other people complaining about this, so it's a disturbing trend from apple/at&t.

Reading Orbitcast now and according to them Apple did not reject the APP
It's important to note that this isn't the end of the process, and the door is still open when it comes to opening up satellite radio to iPhone users.
"As of yesterday, the uSirius StarPlayr Application for iPhone still had a status of 'In Review' with Apple," said a NiceMac representative in a written statement. "Later in the evening we became aware that the application was not rejected, however could not be approved at this time." (emphasis added)
This is a very carefully written statement, which is why I've bolded the key words above. Apple did not explicitely reject the app, and by all accounts, the StarPlayr App itself is technically sound.

How much memory do the various apps require? My unit is arriving Monday. I got the 8 gig.
I've already got 4 gig put aside for music, and maybe another 1/4 gig for pix. That leaves 3.5.
anyone have any go-to apps they'd like to recommend to an iphone tyro?

Reading Orbitcast now and according to them Apple did not reject the APP
http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/starplayr-iphone-app-not-accepted-by-apple-its-still-not-over-yet.html
Apple has rejected apps before for business or copyright reasons. My bet is that their lawyers are worried that if this goes through, Sirius XM might hit them with a copyright claim. Or they might be asking Sirius XM if they want to do one themselves.
Or this could be similar to what happened with the Podcaster app. It was rejected by Apple on copyright grounds...and then came firmware version 2.0, which integrated podcasting with the iPod app already in the iPhone. I don't know if this means Apple might be thinking of directly integrating satellite radio into the iPhone, but it might be part of this too.

Streaming music: Pandora, Last.fm, or Slacker.
IM: Palringo, which can connect to multiple IM services, including AOL, Yahoo, and mSN.
The Amazon.com app is cool, because you can take pics of things in stores with it and send them in to Amazon, who'll email you back telling you how much it costs there.
If you're into Twitter, there are a whole host of good Twitter apps. Twitterific is the one I use, but I've heard many good things about Tweetie.
PhoneFlix allows you to edit your Netflix queue on your phone.
Google Earth is just fucking cool too. There's also an official Google app that optimizes a lot of those services for the iPhone.

I work for a company that devs iPhone apps (I don't, but I keep up with the mobile team) and there are specific rules to iPhone apps. One of them is not being able to use other people's property to power your apps, so if NiceMac didn't have XM permission to stream thru the app, Apple will reject it.
And Apple always gives a reason why apps are rejected. They didn't put it in their press release, but they know why it was.

I feel bad for those NiceMac guys they spent their spare time (according to them) working on the app knowing that there is a good chance Sirius/XM was working on a official app and that there would be a good chance Apple was going to reject it anyway.

XM Sirius Player in Beta (http://www.iphonesavior.com/2009/03/official-sirius-xm-iphone-app-in-beta.html)
On the heels of the unfortunate delays surrounding NiceMac's uSirius StarPlayr app, news has surfaced that an official Sirius XM iPhone app is in beta according to Orbitcast. It's rumored that the new iPhone app will be launched for free, designed to stream the regular Sirius or XM internet content to both iPhone and iPod touch users according to sources reporting to Orbitcast.
"Sources close to Sirius XM Radio Inc. say that the company has been in development of an official iPhone App, and the app is currently in beta, Orbitcast has learned."
iPhone streaming would be available to any Sirius or XM subscriber paying for internet service. Some have speculated that NiceMac, LLC may have already struck a deal with the satellite company since we reported last week that their uSirius app was bogged down with approval issues from Apple.
I spoke to one of the principal members from the NiceMac team who confirmed that no deal has been struck with Sirius XM thus far concerning their uSirius app. This recent revelation by Orbitcast may point to the real reason their 3rd party app failed being approved.
Last Friday Sirius XM Radio Inc. delivered an email containing a teaser message that read; "Something big is coming..." pointing to this week for the mystery of "3 deals - 3 ways to listen" to be revealed. It's likely that the company will make an announcement centered around their debut iPhone app release soon if one truly exists. Other sources have verified the app will be launched 'very shortly.' Screenshots of an official Sirius XM app were suspiciously MIA at the time of this post.

The Kindle app is out for iPhone. It allows you to download Kindle books you download from Amazon's site onto your iPhone to read. It syncs with your Kindle, too, so you could download a book you're reading on your Kindle onto your iPhone, and it would open at the page you're on on your Kindle. Then when you reopen your Kindle, it picks up where you read to on your iPhone.
It's a snazzy app, but I think I still like Stanza better. And I still don't think I can read a full-length book on the iPhone screen.

This is interesting: Cydia, one of the installers you use if you jailbreak your iPhone, is going to open an actual store to sell apps that Apple won't allow for whatever reason.
http://tech.yahoo.com/news/macworld/20090306/tc_macworld/cydiaopensunauthorizediphoneappstore
I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's good to see someone sort of standing up to Apple and letting developers actually work on apps that can't get through the current process, but jailbreaking does make me very nervous. But if you get someone taking it seriously and approaching it as a business, and not a h3x0r thing to pwn Apple, it might get much safer and far more reliable, and the reasons not to do it will recede.
If anything, Cydia better have some damn good lawyers. Apple's going to come after them hard.

The times I dropped the phone and broke it I did not have a case on it but I have dropped the phone before and it didn't break it all depends on how it hits whatever surface you drop it on.

I took the 60 day trial, but dropped it mostly because I didn't think I'd use it enough to justify the cost.
There are free services now that do most of the stuff that MobileMe does. Google now can sync your contacts and calendar via an Exchange server to your iPhone. SkyDrive by Microsoft gives you 20 GB of free online file storage space. Neither solution is as elegant as MobileMe, true, but if you just need to occasionally sync things, they'll work.

Yeah, jailbreaking an iPhone can be very scary, but remember that it's just copying the old firmware over with an altered version of it. That's all it is.
If you run the Restore function in iTunes, it completely reverses it. And you can still do that even if the jailbreaking process totally fucks up.
I'd recommend you do that if you have to take it to the Apple Store.

This is for mac only
Important: Once you complete the jailbreaking process, you have to restore the previous USB drivers. Go to to this page and download IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg" for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55, then repeat the same operation. Once you restart, Mac OS X 10.5.6 will be restored to its original state.

The main one to grab is Backgrounder, to enable true background processes to run on the iPhone.
It's way easy. Here's what you do: when you are running an app you want to put in the background, like an IM program, briefly hold down the Home button. A message will pop up saying backgrounding is enabled. Just hit the home key again to minimize it like normal. When you do want to close it permanently, go back in, and hold the Home button down again until a message pops up saying it is disabled for that application. Now it'll close.

What to expect from iPhone 3.0
The first thing to remember about Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 3.0 special event, announced last Thursday and scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m PT), is that it has been billed as “an advance preview.”
That means no new software — and certainly no new hardware — is likely to be released to the public today. What Apple is hosting is an invitation-only event for developers so they can learn about a new iPhone SDK (software development kit) and get a sneak peek at the third major build of the iPhone’s basic operating system.
iPhone Software RoadmapSteve Jobs hosted a similar event on March 6, 2008 — the “iPhone Software Roadmap” — at which he released a beta version of the first SDK and previewed iPhone 2.0. Both represented major advances over the original iPhone, but end users didn’t see the benefits until four months later, with the release of the iPhone 3G and the launch of the App Store on July 11, 2008. iPhone 2.0 introduced dozens of enhancements (and more than a few problems), but the most important advance turned out to be the SDK and the tens of thousands of third-party iPhone applications it has since spawned.
So what can we expect from Tuesday’s event?
Most of the advance speculation has centered on iPhone 3.0. Among the new features rumored or expected — but, remember, not necessarily available right away — are:
* Copy and paste. Better two years late than never, according to multiple sources. See, for example, here and here.
* Push notification. So Facebook, say, could alert you when you have a new message. This was promised in June 2008, but not yet delivered.
* MMS — Multimedia Messaging Service. So you can forward those pictures sent to you by friends with far less sophisticated cell phones. Maybe yes, maybe no.
* Better mail program. Why can’t you search past messages? Read them in landscape mode? Delete then en masse?
* Internet sharing. For those times when your iPhone has access but your laptop doesn’t. Apple and AT&T have both said so-called “tethering” is coming real soon now.
* Bluetooth support. Currently available only for phone headsets. Could be expanded to support wireless keyboards, speaker systems, file exchanges, syncing etc.
* Flash support. So you’d see videos and dancing advertisements instead of those little blue cubes. Adobe (ADBE) says its Flash Player software is ready and waiting for Apple’s approval.
* Better App management. The current interface is barely capable of organizing 148 applications, never mind 28,000.
* Voice dialing and turn-by-turn directions. Quick, before iPhone users cause any more traffic accidents.
* Video capture. It can be done without modifying the built-in camera as iPhone Video Recorder, an application available only for jailbroken iPhones, has shown.
* A new browser. The current version of iPhone Safari is nearly two years old and starting to get a little long in the tooth.
Owners of competing smartphones snicker when they read these lists; Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Mobile and Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry have had many of these features for years. According to one report, Apple’s primary motivation for introducing the improvements now is to head off competition from the forthcoming Palm (PALM) Pre.
But what none of the competing smartphones have is an SDK that’s as easy to use as Apple’s or an App Store that makes marketing and distributing applications so painless — and profitable.
Which is why the first part of Tuesday’s event — the opportunity for developers to learn about the new SDK — may turn out to be the more significant.
As Seth Weintraub notes in his widely circulated Computerworld blog, developers are going to need some lead time if Apple plans to introduce a new piece of mobile hardware — an Apple tablet, as he suggests, or a more advanced iPhone or iPod touch.
Much less has been written about what that new SDK might include (and most of it is pretty technical), but among the improvements developers are looking for are:
* Better syncing between apps. So those 28,000 applications could share data among themselves.
* Better calendar and t0-do list support. So an e-mail invitation could be automatically added to your iCal.
* More background operation. So you could check your e-mail, for example, without interrupting that Internet radio show you were listening to.
After that, the requests quickly go over this reporter’s head. Ars Technica contributor Erica Sadun, for example, is asking for improved AVFoundation, CFNetwork frameworks, expanded UIKit objects and an improved Interface Builder (link), but we’re at a loss to explain what all that means.
In any event, our questions should be answered soon enough. My colleague Jon Fortt will be covering the show live for Fortune.com, as will several other sites. (9to5 Mac says it will be displaying four live-blog feeds at once.)
We’ll be monitoring the special event from our leafy backyard in Brooklyn and will post a summary of the key findings as soon as we know what they are.

So did I jailbreak my iPhone for nothing ?
We'll see. If multitasking is added in 3.0, there goes my main reason for doing it, so I'll return to the official Apple fold. But remember that today is just a preview and the unveiling of the new SDK. 3.0 is probably a few months away from actually rolling out.
I don't believe that we'll see Flash capability in 3.0. It would run like shit on the current hardware. Maybe if there's going to be a new iPhone with a faster processor and more RAM, though...

Also, if they do make it look a bit more like OS X, with stuff in folders instead of just multiple screens (as I work on filling my 6th screen of apps and move towards 7), that would be very very cool too.

03-17-2009, 12:23 PM
OK, now we know, and all I can say is...holy shit, this fucking rocks. We got way more than I thought. So here we go:
--A feature, similar to Spotlight in OS X, will allow you to search for apps on your iPhone.
--Apps will be able to allow updating within the app: for example, a game could give you an option to download more levels.
--Apps can be written to control 3rd party devices, such as a stereo dock.
--Apps can use Google Maps
--Turn by turn directions will be supported.
--CUT, COPY, AND PASTE!!!!!!!
--Multiple photos can be attached to the same e-mail
--Emails and SMS's can be written in landscape mode (thus making the onscreen keyboard much larger.)
--Push functionality will be added to 3rd party apps. This won't be true backgrounding, but it will allow other apps to send update info. For example, an IM program would be able to show you new IM's are coming in, even if it's not running.
--Stereo bluetooth, baby! Fuck cords on your headphones! This also applies for the iPod Touch as well, so you'll be able to use bluetooth accessories on it.
--MMS. You can now text people pics of your cock & balls.
And there's actually way more than this. I wasn't expecting nearly this much. See more here:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/apple-previews-iphone-os-3-0/
I can't wait!

I just want my tracks automatically "scrobbed" to Last.FM.
I don't know if the whole push thing will allow for that or not. I kind of doubt it.
A few more features:
--Tethering. Apparently, the ability to tether the iPhone to a computer for Internet access will be built into the iPhone OS, but Apple will only enable it if the carrier in a given country allows it. Expect that, when 3.0 is inevitably jailbroken, someone will figure out how to turn this on even if it's turned off.
--You can subscribe to Google Calendar directly in the calendar icon, similar to the way you can have the Mail app connect to Gmail.
--Automatic login will be supported in Safari.
--Shake to shuffle songs, sort of like in the Nano.
--A stronger parental control control, extending into videos and apps (does this mean that Apple will relax content control on apps?)
--Voice memo recorder
And here's a cool one:
--Peer-to-peer Bluetooth connectivity: Apps will be able to connect one iPhone to another via the Bluetooth connection.

Scott Forstall mentioned peer to peer connections. You can connect to other iPhones and iPod touchs to play games and stuff. He said that it uses Bluetooth so that you don't need to be on the same wi-fi network. Does the iPod touch have Bluetooth?
It is good that apple is finally using Bluetooth for more than just headsets.

As I understand it, the iPod Touch has Bluetooth circuitry in it, but it is not currently activated -- it doesn't have the software in there to turn it on. The 3.0 update (which will actually cost $9.95 for iPod Touch) will turn it on.

Sirius, Nicemac Now Working Together on Apple-Related Apps
Recently Nicemac, the developers of the first Satellite Radio iPhone application submitted to Apple (AAPL) for approval, made headlines when it was forced to abandon the project by Sirius XM (SIRI). As we later learned, Sirius XM has its own application pending and Nicemac announced that it would discontinue its operations as of March 8, 2009.
That was then, this is now. It appears that Nicemac and Sirius may have come to an agreement of some kind. Through Twitter, Nicemac has informed us that they will be returning to the Mac this summer with a focus placed on MP3 streams, recording/iPod integration, album art, lyrics, and purchase links. This goes hand-in-hand with recent announcements by Sirius XM that they would be introducing new Apple-related applications in the second quarter.
Nicemac also posted that they have a new Mac server installed and that private testing has begun on their internet radio station with coding started last week on StarPlayr 3.0 for Mac. What makes this more intriguing is the screenshot of the new player which indicates Howard 100 as the selected channel (on right, click to enlarge). As this channel is ONLY available through Sirius XM, it stands to reason that Sirius XM and Nicemac have begun a new Internet Radio venture to compete with free Internet sites such as Pandora.

Completely Legal so far it's worth the 10 bucks, I was able to listen to Stern this morning while driving and the signal did not drop out once. To answer your question you can't record it per say in the app but I'm sure if you wanted to you could download a recorder app and then just record what's coming out of the speaker, it would probably sound like shit.

This is how they are getting away with it, it's not illegal what they are doing and this is why. The web player method that pocket times uses will be hard to kill off. It's a web browser interface. Pocket tunes can argue that easily. And it can be argued that the iPhone is a computer and banning pocket tunes & saying you have to use safari would probably break anti-trust. Since they are using the same web player that computer's use. XM method is sketchy, but they may not be able to hold pocket tunes resp.
The way it works is you type what you want to listen to into the browser window and choose the channel for Sirius you go directly to Sirius's website for XM you are using a different stream provider since XMRO requires flash to operate. It's worth the 10 bucks to be able to listen to Sat radio on the iPhone.
Sirius XM probably won't be able to shut this down because of the way the app was made , as far as recording on the iPhone/iTouch even when the Offical app comes out (if it does seems like it should have been out by now) it won't be able to record a stream either.

Apple is giving iPhone away for a great price now
$150 refurbished 16GB iPhone 3G from AT&T now available online
That’s right fellas, dump that inventory! With new iPhone models right around the corner, AT&T and Apple have been doing everything they can to move current stock. Back in March we scooped $150 refurbished 16GB iPhone 3Gs hitting various regional stores and this time around it looks like AT&T means business. It is now offering the refurbished 16GB model in both black and white in the online AT&T store, meaning anyone and everyone willing to sign on the dotted line of a new 2-year contract can snag one. There is a limited of one purchase per household however, and the new line or new customer stipulation may apply — meaning you might not be able to renew your current contract and get the $150 price. So, as long as you don’t mind a factory refresh and maybe a tiny scuff here and there — and you aren’t planning to wait for the new iPhones to drop — this might just be the deal for you.
Thanks, Tyrone!

Delete the network, reboot then re-enter the hexi-decimal key or password then it should be fine, I run into this with the touch every couple months.
My question is why do I have this issue more now that I am using WPA-PSK & TKIP. I thought it was only with AES that iphones and touches had issues with.

iPhone 3.0 will be out on June 17th (and the iPhone 3GS will be out 2 days later)
The current 8GB iPhone 3G is now $99 starting today
The new 16 GB iPhone 3GS will be $199/32 GB will be $299
Looks the same. Rumors of Matte finish and forward facing camera seem to be wrong. The camera is now 3 MP with auto focus and macro and now iPhone can take video (wow they are behind with that. Some phones have 6 or more and every other phone I can think of can do video already)
Lot of new features that won't be available to me just by installing 3.0 (Camera upgrade, Compass, Voice Control, Better Battery life) but nothing that will make me spend $200 or $300 to replace my current 3G.

The reason why AT&T won’t support MMS with the iPhone until “late Summer”, tethering info! (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/06/08/the-reason-why-att-wont-support-mms-with-the-iphone-until-late-summer/)
We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?
We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

So I'm sitting at my desk with my iPhone plugged in and iTunes is telling me that "This version of the iPhone software (2.2.1) is the current version"
Where the fuck is 3.0? It has been available for developers since WWDC (The "gold master" they call it)
It has been almost 2 years since they put out this smart phone that was not smart enough to cut and paste or MMS and they don't have the decency to make it available to the general public first thing on the release date? We have to wait until this afternoon?
It's not that I would really use Cut and Past or MMS (I have had BlackBerrys and other devices that did that and rarely used either feature) I would not have purchased my iPhone if I needed those things or a video camera. I needed eMail, iPod and a phone. Those things it does well (In the DC area I have no problems with AT&T)
I will not be upgrading to 3G S and they will need to impress me to have me upgrade in June 2010 with the 4th version on the iPhone. I have a 3G and would not qualify for the upgrade price until next year anyway, at which time they really need to impress me.

How to activate tethering on any iPhone without jailbreaking
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10265889-233.html
During the WWDC keynote, AT&T was strangely absent from Apple's list of carriers that will support tethering in iPhone OS 3.0. AT&T has since explained that it will support tethering later this summer, but many iPhone users are champing at the bit for the added functionality. If you're one of the eager masses, use this how-to to enable tethering on any iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0--without jailbreaking--but only with a Mac.
Difficulty level:
Medium
What you need:
>Mac OS X 10.5 or later
>Download this carrier settings file and double click it to mount it in Finder
>iPhone OS 3.0 (7A341) Gold Master final release for iPhone (see below note)
>First prerelease version of iTunes 8.2 (download link)

4. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences, locate the following three files, and drag each one to the Trash: com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist, com.apple.iTunes.plist, and com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
5. Empty the Trash
Install iTunes 8.2 prerelease Mac
6. Install the iTunes 8.2 prerelease you downloaded.
7. Connect your iPhone with iPhone OS 3.0 software loaded on it to your computer with the standard USB sync cable.
8. Once the iPhone is connected, go to the Device Summary page in iTunes.
9. While pressing and holding the Option key on your Mac, click the Restore button in iTunes
10. Browse to the mounted carrier settings file you downloaded and mounted above and select the ATT_US.ipcc file. iTunes will now perform an upgrade on your iPhone and display the following message:
Set up tethering on your iPhone
11. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and go to General and then Network while your iPhone is still tethered to your computer.
12. Locate "Internet Tethering" and turn it on.
If tethering is successful, you will see a message that is similar to the following:
Go into Preferences Network select the adapter as displayed above, and you'll see something similar to this as it becomes active:
Your iPhone will display a blue background banner on different screens to indicate that tethering is active and running as shown below.
Our brief tests found tethering to be zippy fast on an iPhone 3G. Your experiences may vary, but we would like to hear about them in the comments.

How to activate tethering on any iPhone without jailbreaking
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10265889-233.html
Step 1 is to buy a Mac. I don't have one (Well I have an old one, I have never connected an iPod or iPhone to it)
I guess there is no set of PC instructions?

I haven't seen anything out there yet for PC's but I wasn't really looking since I mostly use a mac. I'm sure some more info will come out as the day goes on.

Easily the best app I have on my phone.

Regarding the 3.0 software, my iPhone battery died last night. I was pretty sure it was fully charged before I went to bed but my alarm did not go off and I woke up to find the battery had died. Anyone else noticed a difference in the battery? It could just be a coincidence on my part.

Pocket tunes allows for the lo-fi version for those that prepaid but didn't complain. Remember the fraudulent "lock-in" offer before the changes? They didn't tell you that you'd get a 32k version of the online signal. This happened to me until I spent a week or so bitching.

Well, again, I have the original Iphone, so if there was any update, I sure havent noticed.
But I'm liking that there should be a whole bunch of new apps out there, and hoping I'll be able to use em.

My 3g iPhone has stopped finding WiFi networks....it always gets data on the 3g network, but not any WiFi connections.
I have the WiFi tab on, and when i ask to choose a network , nothing ever comes up (even though i am at work/home with wifi) Even when i enter the network name and password manually, its says it cant find the network. WTF?
I tried Resetting the Network settings, but to no avail.
I love the phone, but just realized that for some time now, i havent been getting the best out of it.
Any ideas?

Something similar happened to me this past weekend. I changed my internet provider, and while my iTouch's wifi ran fine at that time later that night I could not get a signal. I played around for over an hour before giving up.
The next day I had a signal again, but now my son's playstation wouldn't connect. After another couple hours of frustration, the provider told me that my modem had a device limit of 7. She raised it to 12 and now everything runs fine.
Don't know if that's the case with you, but it may be worth checking out.

Not sure if thats the case with work wifi, but definitely dont have many devices at home. But regardless, the damn thing just wont recognize ANY networks, even ones that are locked....the circle just spins for a few seconds and poof, nothing....no networks to choose, or forget, or tweak....just no networks at all. Very curious.
Loved using the SiriusXM app today.
Well worth the extra $3. If Sirius market it rights, it'll be huge, but it didn't help their causing any that Howard dug his heels in and isn't on the app, and nearly every bit of press about it today was about exactly that.
Oh, and the MLB app added live streaming video for select games each day. Watched a few innings of the A's/Dodgers game last night...works great.

I have to admit that Sirius has done a great job marketing this app. A full page ad in USA Today (and I'm sure other publications), plus lots of promos on all of the stations. Too bad they screwed the online service up earlier this year, as many people are just discovering today that they don't have the right type of online service.

I had the same problems I posted it about it a few pages back. My phone wouldn't recognize any networks. It wouldn't pick up the network in my house or any of the unprotected ones in my neighborhood. I ended up calling Apple made a appointment with the Genius Bar and walked out with a replacement phone for free. Give that a shot Apple is great with customer service IMO

That is weird, I have 6 screens of apps. The only thing that changed was a single icon on my first page was moved to the second screen to make room for the voice memos app.
The only issue I had was the iPhone backup process was taking way too long, but that stopped after I restarted my computer and iPhone.

I thought the same thing happened to me - just swipe to the next screen and you'll see everything. It's a fucked up layout thing. Page one is the Apple default stuff, and then Last.FM is all by itself on the second one. Then my d/l apps are on page 3 - 5.

Ok I did the tethering by changing a few things in the terminal and it works perfectly
1. Quit iTunes
2. Open Terminal and type "defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE"
3. Open iTunes, select your phone and press "check for updates" while holding down the 'Alt' key on your keyboard. You will be prompted to select a file.
4. After you load the file, make sure you restart the phone

Why the fuck did Apple disable the battery percentage option on the iPhone 3G running 3.0? If you look at the video here: http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/ you will noticed that both the 3G and 3G s have battery percentages. It seems the some earlier releases of 3.0 had the percentage option for the battery but in the final version, it's gone and only available on the 3G S.
Thanks Apple!

Agreed. I was even a little worried at how easy the phone call went.
There was no hard sell or suggested sell... she just set up the premium and was done.
So, I like the xm app.. I think it's behind the actual satelllite feed to ensure a steady uninterrupted streaming experience, to answer someones query above.
But once again I'm a victim of having the original Iphone. No live video for me with the mlb app. Only highlights. But I do still love this app!
