You guys are all looking at this through incredibly jaded eyes with no understanding of how that will be perceived by the average voter. She proved herself to be tough, American dream, 21st century woman. It wasnt an earth shattering speech, but it was good, not great. Solid start for her

Awww budday, that was a bad speech. Really bad.

As underwhelming and surreal as that speech was, it was exactly what needed to be said for her to skate by. It was basically, "LOOK AT ME AND MY FAMILY! I'M A HARD WORKING MOTHER WITH KIDS! AND ONE OF THEM IS RETARDED!" Nobody can attack that without it blowing up in their faces. This was the national equivalent of an annoying person cornering you and showing you pictures of their kids.

So the Republican Party is liberal?

Honestly, to show how fucked up our political terminology has become, I'd argue that the "religious right" is far more traditionally "liberal" than even a lot of the Democratic Party now. They view government as a tool to use to effect social change. That's almost a textbook definition of "liberalism", when you think about it. Now, the social change they want is not social equality, and certainly not income/wealth distribution; it's moral change. Government should be an agent of morality.

But it's definitely a big, activist government.

This is why I think that if the Libertarian Party could ever get its shit together, and stop nominating nuts like Bob Barr and get a workable platform instead of rehashed Ayn Rand claptrap (stop thinking you can kill government in one stroke, boys; we need to curb corporate power, because killing the government just gives corporations total, unchecked power over us), it could be a real force. Because I think a lot of Republicans are actually Libertarians, they just don't know it yet.

epo
09-03-2008, 08:05 PM
What makes it progressive?

The whole forward thinking platform. You know...unlike the conservative agenda which wants Blowhard's neighborhood to be like it was in 1955.

She's an eskimo!

An Eskimo is fishing through a hole in the ice. He sits by the hole with his fishing rod for over an hour, with no luck.
After another hour, a huge booming voice calls down to him.

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."

The eskimo ignores this voice and carries on fishing. After a five minutes he hears the voice again saying;

"THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!"

The eskimo looks around but can not see the source of the sound. He shouts,
"Is that the voice of the lord?"
The voice replies,

"NO, THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE ICE RINK MANAGER."

They have the same problem that Reaganomics conservatives have. Their answer to EVERYTHING is small government, privatization, and tax cuts. Well we tested out a shitload of failed and impossible libertarian policies in Iraq that didn't work here, and the result was predictable: Big Business is just as bad as Big Government. Sometimes government IS the solution. That's what the libertarians will never get.

The Weirdest Speech Of The Night

Romney's.

I think David Brooks on PBS called it "borderline insane." Megan has a great line:

"Mitt Romney seems to use the word "liberal" in a randomly pejorative fashion. I half expect him to say "I was eating breakfast this morning, and my hash browns were all liberal. I sent them back and told the waitress to bring me some good, conservative hash browns.""

It was random and moronic.

Agreed. I thought Romney was completely off his rocker. And in addition to that observation, he kept screaming about the need for change as if the Republicans didn't control the Presidency, the Congress, the majority of the Governorships, and the Courts for a large portion of Bush's presidency.

So...I guess he was insulting his party's leadership??

I may be biased against Rudy, but he didnt seem very polished.
He had some good zingers, but although the pundits said he was the bulldog the Repubs needed, I think he fell short. You'd think he had never spoken in public before, at times. I listened to these speeches on radio, so maybe I was missing his funny faces, or puppet show?

The surprise of the night for me was Governor Palin. She started off weak, but still just a little stronger than Rudy (maybe Rudy was bad on purpose for this reason?). And she gradually showed strength, made some good jokes without being too hurtful, basically showed that she can at least play the part of someone who belongs in all this.

I think they made the point this evening that the republicans are just as interesting as the democrats.... but I'm still undecided. I know watching McCain tomorrow will sway me toward his side; Ive always enjoyed his speeches. Problem is, I get the same feeling after a McCain speech that I do after Obama speeches.

Rudy's speech was weird on several levels

First, Rudy is suppose to the be the ultimate centrist of the Republican Party, yet he gave a ridiculously conservative speech, that was designed to fire up the Republican base.

Ultimately, I think he did that, but it was kind of surreal to hear Rudy mocking Obama for being too high brow when he was the mayor of fucking New York City.

I think it was good for its goal, but the fact that they gave him the goal of the 'red meat, fire up the base' guy was odd.

I would think you'd want Rudy as the guy that pitches McCain as the centrist.

I don't think she'll hold up to the scrutiny for independents in the long run.

She'll play well with the base. She may connect with a minority of independent women who like her story.

She didn't really address any of her policy points or political beliefs tonight. She spent the first half of the speech telling her family story, and the second half attacking Obama.

When her ideals start to trickle out, people will find them very conservative...probably a bit too conservative for most independents.

I would think, though, that McCain should get something of a bounce out of this convention, so tightening back up to where things were before the DNC seems about right in terms of polls.

But this thing isn't going to move mountains as the spin after this would have you belief.

It's good for her, in that it caps what was essentially a week of pretty bad press, and kind of clears the air on that a little, but again, I have to see what happens when people become exposed to what she stands for.

Also, we've all been swept away in this Palin talk, because it's been a fantastic rollercoaster to watch.

In the end, it's going to come down to McCain.

I think Palin could assist in losing it for McCain, just like Biden could for Obama. I think Palin can be an asset with certain demographics, like Biden.

But in the end, it's still Obama vs. McCain.

Last poll I saw on VPs, something like 90% of people don't even take the VP into consideration when voting (which explains Cheney).

When I hear everyone raving about Palin's speech and what a good choice she turned out to be, I feel that I just don't get today's Republicans. I miss the old Wall Street/free trade Republicans with their small government and allowing the market to run without much interference. These new evangelical, social conservatives scare the hell out of me. I guess I just don't get the whole religious thing. Are we seriously thinking about putting a VP in office who wants to put Creationism in our science classes? I cringe when they talk about Islam and supporting Israel because I know they are thinking of Armegeddon and fulfilling god's plans for the end of the world. I don't even want to know what she believes about gays, people of other religions being sent to hell, exorcism, etc.
I think we as a country go overboard in respecting religious beliefs. Much of what Palin believes, and Bush as well, is batshit crazy and dangerous. They should feel free to believe whatever they want in the privacy of their own nutty communities but they shouldn't be running our country.

Palin's speech to nowhere (http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/attytood/Sad.html)

Palin's speech to nowhere

Sarah Palin delivered a great speech tonight -- for her party, for John McCain, for herself, for what she set out to accomplish. This was America's first real glimpse at the Alaska governor, and what we saw was a boffo politician who speaks in a plaintive prairie voice that channels America's Heartland like a chilling breeze rippling a field of wheat, who knows how to tell a joke, how to bring down the house and bring a tear to a few eyes. She is proud of her family, as she should be, and there is much to admire in her own "personal journey of discovery" (don't we all have these, by the way?) including her efforts to raise her son Trig. It is indeed nice to think that there would be an advocate for such children inside the corridors of the White House, although I'd surely like to hear what -- if anything -- she's done for special needs kids as governor of Alaska.

But...it was a great speech -- written for someone else, a male in fact, days before the Palin selection was even a gleam in John McCain's eye, but a great speech nonetheless. The pundits are fawning over it as I write this -- Tom Brokaw said she could not have been "more winning and more engaging" -- and in a world that is dominated by horse race journalism I can understand why, because I agree that Palin's one-of-a-kind story has given her long shot running mate a decent chance now of pulling this one out at the finish line.

It's a good metaphor, a horse race, because in the end it finishes right near where it started -- just as it will be for America if John McCain and Sarah Palin are sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009. Yes, it was a great speech politically, and a great night for her family, but an empty speech for America -- and for America's families. It was defined by its lowest moment, Palin's shameless lie about "the Bridge to Nowhere."

This was a Speech to Nowhere.

It was a Speech to Nowhere when Palin said that "I told the Congress 'Thanks but no thanks' on that Bridge to Nowhere, because that was a lie, and the worst kind of lie in American politics, a blatant falsehood that showed utter contempt for the American people that Palin pledged to serve, assuming we are too stupid to look up or know that truth, that she pushed for those funds in Congress and while she got great political mileage out of announcing that she was killing the project, she still has not returned the funds to American people.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because Palin also boasted seconds before that other lie of fighting against wasteful earmarks in Congress, even though she pushed for and accepted $27 million of such grants when she was mayor of Wasilla.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because Palin said that "we've got lots" of oil and gas this country, and while one supposes that all depends upon what you definition of the words "lots" is, the production of oil in the United States has been irrevocably on the decline since 1970, and with her words she showed this nation that she and John McCain will perpetrate the dangerous myths that began with Ronald Reagan at his acceptance speech in 1980, that sunny optimism is the solution to all our energy woes, and not a posture that put energy research on a war footing, or requires moral leadership on conservation, mass transit, or any other common sense answers whatsoever.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because Palin boasted that "I stood up to the special interests, and the lobbyists, and the Big Oil companies," and the audience cheered -- after eight brutal years of the same crowd's cheering for two oilmen in the White House who fiddled while $4-a-gallon gas burned and while American men and women died in a needless war fought on top of an oilfield, and while lobbyist friends like Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed got rich at the same time.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because Palin had the nerve to talk at length about John McCain's "torturous interrogations" in the very same speech when she all but condoned the continuation of similar, abhorrent practices that have been directed for eight years by our own U.S. leaders, when she stated that Democrats are "worried that someone won't read them [terrorism suspects] their rights."

It was a Speech to Nowhere because Palin belittled "community organizers" -- thousands of Americans who work long hours for little pay in some of the toughest neighborhoods, trying to assist the American Dream that even the poorest among us can pull themselves out of the muck with a helping hand. Palin and other GOP speakers have turned a noble job into a dirty word tonight -- shame on you! Listen to what CNN's Roland Martin said after Palin's speech was over.

My two parents are sitting home in Houston, Texas and they are both community organizers and the GOP and Sarah Palin might have well have said "being community organizers doesn't matter" to my parents face. I'm disgusted. Community organizers keep people in their homes, keep their lights on, keep food in the fridge.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because it made no mention of the men that Sarah Palin and John McCain are running to replace -- their names are Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, in case you've forgotten this week -- and no acknowledgment that as many 80 percent of Americans believe this country is on the wrong track, or that you can't solve a nation's problems when you deny they exist.

It was a Speech to Nowhere because...well, I urge everyone to read the text, without Palin's sharp delivery or her adoring fans in the crowd and in the press box, and tell me where there is any kind of policy at all -- except for the short boilerplate passage on energy -- or any mention of the issues that concern everyday Americans, including the No. 1 issue of the economy. Show me the part where this "grand slam" of speech touches on how citizens can afford health care or sending their kids to college.

But more than anything else, it was a Speech to Nowhere because for all the acclaim, the great bulk of it was devoted to one thing, and that is the one thing that millions of Americans are talking about in 2008 when we talk about "change" -- to the ugliest kind of "pit bull" politics, to use Palin's words, that tear down the other side with cheap ad hominem attacks, surrounded by a cloud of half-truths (uh, those "Greek columns"...did you actually even watch Obama's speech? Because there weren't any) and ridiculous innuendo about "parting the waters" which means nothing but fires up a big hockey rink full of Dittoheads. These kind of vicious attacks -- without having the grace to acknowledge that, despite some real differences on issues with Obama, that he has already accomplished something impressive that says something positive about America and the progress we've made -- were utterly lacking in class. And this is what Tom Brokaw considers "winning" -- have we really sunk that low as a nation?. The people of America want and deserve a real debate, now trash talk from the basketball point guard who was once called "Sarah Barracuda."

I hope America wakes up tomorrow and realizes that Sarah Palin's words were rousing -- and completely empty, that they offered no road map (let alone bridge) for America other than more of the bogus partisan name-calling that has gotten us into the mess that we're in now.

Actually, let me rephrase that.

I hope America wakes up tomorrow.

There's little room in Lieberman's heart for anyone but Lieberman.

Lieberman has one issue - beating up on Muslims. He will ally himself with anyone who wants to bomb Tehran.

He is a Democrat who cares about country over party. God forbid.

37,244,000 WATCHED PALIN SPEECH ... [24,029,000 WATCHED BIDEN; 38,379,000 WATCHED OBAMA]... MORE...

Two things:

1. There are conflicting reports about the Palin speech. From Nielsen's preliminary numbers: (http://www.tvweek.com/news/2008/09/palin_beats_hillary_biden_in_b.php)

Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican National Convention last night drew more than 12.75 million viewers on the three broadcast networks, beating out the audiences that tuned into the Democratic convention last week to watch Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Joe Biden.

Preliminary national data from Nielsen Media Research shows that’s slightly ahead of the 12.5 million that saw the broadcast coverage of Sen. Clinton’s call for party unity on night 2 of last week’s Democratic gathering and Sen. Joe Biden’s speech accepting the VP nomination for the Democrats on night 3 of their convention last week.

You may wanna slow down on that 37 million number until those numbers are finalized by tomorrow.

2. Joe Lieberman is a douche. I hated him in 2000 and I hate him now.

I saw some interesting data about Palin's speech last night in terms of her time usage:

5 minutes directly about herself
10 minutes directly about Senator McCain
25 minutes directly about Senator Obama

Who is this election about again?

To use the adage that Crazy Rudy was going for last night*:

When the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When the law is on your side, argue the law. And when you don't have either the law or the facts on your side, you pound the table.

Really, what else can the Republican spin doctors do besides yell that McCain is a hero, insinuate that Palin might give us some nip slips and claim that the other guys are ASSHOLES!! ?
McCain, for somebody who has wanted to be President for a long time, is not bringing any new ideas to the table on how to un-Bush the country, just his "I'm familiar so you can trust me" biography.

*I hope that Rudy didn't "change the facts" in his US Attorney days, but I wouldn't bet on it.

They've already said tonight that McCain is going to argue heavily, in his speech, that change is coming to Washington.

Again...how can you argue change when you've controlled the Presidency, the Congress for six of the last eight years, the majority of the Governorships, and the Courts?

It's just not an argument that's going to work for McCain.

McCain has been an outsider even in washington for the last 20 years. People know that. And we dont control the courts. Weve had congress for 4 of the last 8.

He supports all the Bush economic policies, and the War in Iraq.

His VP pick suggest he supports the Christian Conservative agenda on social issues.

None of that is change, and I'm sorry, but that stuff trumps crossing the isle on things like Campaign Finance Reform.

Obama and Biden will carve him up, if he's really going to run on that.

He has opposed Bush on creating DHS, Tax Cuts and the war. He was Bush's biggest critic on the prosecution of the war.

Yes because increasing taxes in a bad economy will make the problem worse. The reason we lose so many jobs overseas is because our corperate tax rate is the 2nd highest in the world.

I have heard McCain say at least 836 times that he supports the Bush tax cuts during this campaign.

So either he's changed his mind, or he's lying to get elected.

And as far as Homeland Security goes, he had the former head on his short list of people for VP.

I do agree that he was critical of the prosecution of the war, but it's a very tough sell to tell a country that, in terms of opinion, is in large numbers against the war, that the problem is in the management.

That's something you can sell to Republicans, because I think a majority still support the war, but not to Independents and Democrats.

Yeah, and the fact you can work 12 year olds in China for 18 hour days for a quarter an hour has nothing to do with it. Fucking taxes, man.
