Alright, so I was driving my car today, I pulled out onto my street and starting going up a hill, the car would not switch out of first gear, eventually it did, but I think now the transmission shifts a little hard and the performance has suffered a little a bit. What could be the problem?

*edit Its a 95 Volvo 850 Turbo and at 18.7 MPG

its far from a hybrid, TJ

You're driving a hybrid.

Is it an autmatic? if it is, did you check the trans fluid when the car was running? What color was it and did it smell burned? If it is red and non burning then id probly go get it checked out because it is kinda impossible to diagnose over the internet. Plus i dont know shit about volvos
hope this helps

How many miles are on it, when was the last time you drained the transmission and replaced the filter, and why are you driving a suburban soccer mom car?

It has 86k on it

I bought it a month ago, So I have done neither.

As for why am I driving a suburban soccer mom car?

It has 220 HP :-)

and is a BMW killer

This is true, that turbo does generate a shitload of torque.

There are oil change stations like Jiffy Lube that will purge all the ATF out of your transmission and torque converter, it costs about 100 bucks.

If the car sat a lot with the previous owner, you know, the ones that "only drove it to church"-you may have a problem with seals beginning to leak and valves that stick.

Like bubs said, check the transmission fluid level (the proper way to do it with an automatic is to check the level with the engine running and warmed up)

If it is any color other then red, it needs to be changed. Brown it has been burnt-lots of heat buildup in the transmission will do this by towing or constant hard acceleration. Also check the manual or call a Volvo dealer to see what the intervals are for filter changes. If it's overdue you need to get it in. It's a couple hundred bucks for a 85,000 mile service on most cars, but that's a hell of a lot cheaper then a couple grand for a transmission rebuild.

I have my own car question: just the other day, i noticed that the blower fan for the AC/heat only works when it's on high. if i set it to low or medium and turn on the AC, i hear/feel the compressor come on, but there's no fan to move the air. it had worked fine on low/med/high up until a few days ago.

if it's a blown fuse or something simple like that, i'll get it fixed, but if it's a big repair (that won't otherwise cause any engine/electrical damage), i'll probably leave it be and use the AC/heat on high when i need it.

any ideas?

btw, it's a '95 Sentra.

still didnt mention if it were stick or auto

220hp is great and all, but the car weighs like 4000 lbs, i have 200hp in a sub 2000lb car...

anywhoooo, if its an auto your first stop is always to check the fluid, and to try an additive like lucas for auto trannies.

have you taken a visual check of the fluid level? i believe in my old 850 it was a yellow dipstick to the right.

if its a manual its probably a shift linkage issue.

there are a ton of volvo message boards with people as friendly (or moreso) than this board that can answer all your questions.

What everyone else said. Could be the torque converter malfunctioning. Shop time.

did you bring it to a mechanic before you bought it?

Get to your mechanic before any more harm is done.

Not always terrible or a a disaster. there are speed sensors in the tyranny(Go Away Jimmy) that could be bad??? Jeep Cherokees are famous for this....I can find out the history of this for you if no one else can...BUT..I have about 3 filters to get to me because I am a rock star..:bye:..Defouw.com..Ask for Jeff

The switch is bad. No electricity is being sent to the blower motor on low or medium, only high. If you know how to remove the cover of your dash to get to the mount that holds the AC blower switch, it's a cheap fix when you only have to buy a new switch.

could be. but with automatic transmission it could be ANYTHING. go to a mechanic. Just shop around before you do. Could be a bad torque converter among sensors seals bad pressure. A lot of things
