I cover the icam on my computer, so if someone hacks into my network thy can't turn it on and look at me or the room that the computer is in. is this wierd? do others do it too?

Don't be so paranoid.

Other than jackin', what could you be doing that you should be nervous about hackers seeing? Just cover it while jackin' and leave it open otherwise you nervous fuck.

If they are so determined to hack into your network just to see you jerkin off and playing with your sweaty balls, let them have their pleasure. It's not hurting you at all.

I have LoJack for my macbook pro and if someone ever steals my computer all I have to do is call up a number, and if they have the computer open and are connected to the internet the built in iSight camera will automatically start.

the reason i originally posted this thread is because the light on the camera will turn on from time to time. sometimes i come home and the computer is asleep but the light is on.

I cover up my cam. I don't want it to get dusty, and I am also paranoid of the 1 in a billion chance that it could get turned on remotely. I pick my nose a lot at home.

EDIT: I guess dust is the only reason now, as the comp that it's connected to is almost never on.

Paranoid??? yes it is possible for someone to hack into your pc/apple and turn on the camera. in order for this to happen there has to be a server program running on your machine that will allow access from the outside whether this be from a Trojan or by design. If the software you use for your camera allows you to remotely access you cam from other systems such as security monitoring programs the chance of hacking is there. If you just use your cam with conferencing programs or with your standard twain driver for taking photos and such there is very little chance of this happening. As long as your teleconferencing program is shut down. I am paranoid myself I've got several levels of protection on my computer Router/firewall. Anti-virus/firewall and a logging program that tracks attempts to access ports on my computer.
This is a fair amount of overkill but considering how many attempts that my computer shows each day on average from 15 to 20 there is the chance that someone at some point may get in. All cams are disconnected when not in use. Important files are stored offline on a removable Hard drive. And a system backup is made after any major installation or upgrade is done. Browsing for porn and other questionable activities is always done on my i don't care if it crashes system this seems to be one of the best preventative measures you can do.

Every time I fire up the server, I'm amazed at the number of ssh attempts I get. Since I use OpenBSD, I'm not worried.

My desktop is secure behind Ubuntu. No extra software, and it's on 24/7.

I've had to add the extra security because I run a bbs/telnet mail server on the master computer. This of coarse brings the port sniffers and spam bots like crackers to a cheese party
