Over three years ago, I needed to board my cats at the Liberty Humane Society when I went into the hospital for 3 weeks. None of my friends could take care of them.

LHS took them in with open arms and even vaccinated them for free. Since then, I've been wanting to give back.

I buy them a whole lot of supplies and I drop them off. This last Friday. the girl said, "Oh yeah, you like the letter."

I've given them hundreds of dollars of donations. I don't make that much. Is it bad that I want that letter for my taxes?

Not at all. You're giving to them, they benefit, and the government pays you a little back for being a good person. It's not like your taking a cut from the Humane Society. Way to go, by the way, the Humane Society does a good work.

You're doing a nice thing for animals and the government will pay you back for doing it.

Win-win.

It's not bad, and any time I've done anything like that, they always ask me if I want a receipt. Even at Goodwill.

If she said it with attitude, I'd have slapped the shit out of her. You are entitled to a receipt for your donations. It does not diminish your donation, just because you account for it in your taxes, which you're supposed to do by law. My accountant breaks my balls about making sure I get receipts for everything I donate. Sometimes I forget.

You could have told her that they're lucky to receive your donations, its a very rough world out there lately. Not many people have extra income these days.

it doesn't diminish your gift in any way. it doesn't cost them (outside of a sheet of paper and some ink) to give you the letter. not like you're asking for a kickback from them.

Sounds like your reason for donating is to help them out, not for the tax break, and you would be doing it reguardless. The deduction is secondary to the good you're doing, so hell no.

Donating items that you would have otherwise thrown away and asking for the receipt is not altruistic. But since you could have used these supplies, it's completely altruistic. You're not profiting at all.

You know this guy's spam in this thread isn't very altruistic. Of course when the spam is removed, my comment will make no sense, but that's not unusual.
