Patrice, Norton and Opie had the conversation on the top 5 stand up comics of all time..i thought it was a decent discussion
heres mine:
1. George Carlin
2. David Cross - he is the funniest person alive. In every aspect of comedy he has excelled..stand up, writing (ben stiller show, mr show), performing, creating characters (Arrested Development). He is the comic renaissance man
3. Louie CK
4. Chris Rock - he would've beaten Louie CK if he didn't fuck up his last stand up special with the weird 3 location shoot thing
5. Jimmy Norton/Bill Burr/Brian Regan - im having a real problem choosing between those 3...both have so much going with them
also, please note, i have the Ricky Gervais stand up special DVR-ed but i haven't checked it out yet

i did it mostly on personal preference. I didn't have Richard Pryor up there on mine even though he is the most influential comic of all time because i never have been able to sit through one of his specials.

Eddie Murphy was fucking hysterical. As a kid my friends and I would just rattle off bits from Delirious.

the problem with eddie murphy is that hes sucked for about 20 years now. For someone to sell out as much as he has, its hard to respect him
i saw him on "Inside the Actors Studio" and he is the biggest cunt. He is a man who has only done whatever for the paycheck. No appreciation of the art or craft of acting. He could be a great actor, the way he has skills to get into different characters..but instead hes like "pay me money". I hate that

This isn't easy.
1. George Carlin
2. Richard Pryor
3. Sam Kinnison
4. Mitch Hedburg
5. Bill Hicks
There are so many comedians that deserve respect for what they do, it really is hard to just put together a top 5. Doug Stanhope, Chris Rock, Steven Wright, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart ... and many more could easily be numbers 4 and 5 on my list.
And I really do think Dice and Eddie Murphy deserve some honorable mention. They may not be stand-up gods now, but god damn they were like rock stars 20+ years ago.

Richard Pryor George Carlin Dice Eddie Murphy Jackie the Jokeman.:drunk:
My 5 top personal favorites:
1. Bill Hicks. Its fucking amazing how relevant his material is today.
2. Lenny Bruce. Some of his material didn't date well, but a majority did. When you consider history, Lenny had the biggest set of balls ever.
3. Bob Newhart. An unbelievable sense of timing coupled with an understated dry wit that I've never seen matched.
4. Bill Cosby. I grew up listening to Cosby and all of that early stuff was so universal that it still connects today.
5. David Cross. A personal favorite, but he couples today's "cringe" humor with actual, relevant comedic & social commentaries.

Can we all agree that anyone that seriously puts Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia on their list should be flogged repeatedly about the crotch.
And no offense to Lil Jimmy, but he doesn't make the short list either. Funny mofo? Yes.
Top 5? Not even close.
Pryor
Murphy
Carlin
Rickles
Chappelle
This is hard but I had to base it on the consistency in which they make me laugh. I can honestly say that I can't watch one of these guys do stand up without cracking up.
Honorable mentions: (in no particular order)

yeah..i hate when hes pegged as "Alternative comic" because he can play in front of any audience. When he called out Larry the Cable Guy he told him "don't call me a PC comic, i can out un-PC your ass anytime"...and he can. David Cross opened for "The Strokes" at the height of their popularity. Not many comics can open for a rock band in really large venues

i agree, as a comic hes great. but the other aspects of his career has turned me off of him. And the fact that hes physically able to do stand up, but he doesn't cuz its easier and pays more to do shitty movies..i just don't respect that. And I can't have him on my great list. Just my personal preference. I can't put the guy who starred in "Haunted Mansion" and "Doctor Do-Little 2" as the best comic

The beauty is that Cross knows how to use the un-PC comments to make an actual point AND be funny. That's the genius of his work...something many others who use cringe as a tactic don't seem to get.

I also find that Cross' punchlines are strong enough where you don't have to agree with his points to laugh
who was that guy who was fired for saying "we wouldnt have the problems today if strom thurmond was president"? was that Trent Lott or something? I never thought he should be fired...but Cross goes off on him, and his punchline for it was so great
Hes talking about Lott being on BET and having to defend himself. He imitaties Lott defending himself as "well..you...see, when i said all niggers were faggots what i meant to say was all faggots are niggers!"

Jimmy once went off on David Cross for being "alternative" after Cross penned that hilarious letter to Larry The Cable guy.
The fact that Jimmy picked Larry the Cable Guy over Cross made me question his comic judgment.

If I recall correctly, that was because Cross was going after what Norton saw as the easy target in the white redneck and not going after some of the things that are "issues". Cross gets a little preachy for me, but that is somewhat made up for by his punchlines. He is a funny guy for sure. I just think the two of them operate on different ends of the spectrum.

Cosby, Newhart, Pryor, Leno, and DeGeneres.
Grew up with all the Cosby albums, found the Newhart stuff and the second hand store. Pryor did it first for most modern comedians.Leno may be the hardest working comic out there, and I just found Ellens odd take on things very funny(this is about her stage act not her show).

Actually, Ron White is pretty fucking funny. I have no idea how he got hooked up with those other idiots.
I think Dave Mordal was probably the funniest guy to come through Last Comic Standing.
Also, god bless whoever mentioned Robin Harris. His "Bebe's Kids" album is an all-time great- absolutely hysterica. The man died way too soon.
