While I think the majority of the moderators here at RonFez.net do a wonderful job, it seems a bit unfair that they, like the Supreme Court, enjoy appointment for life status. It creates the very real possibility that this site becomes more about their personal opinions and beliefs and not those of the fans, as they can edit and ban as they choose.

A one year modship seems fair, and then every January we can be greeted with an entirely new "staff." I think it would be OK for a member to serve as a moderator more than once, but just not consecutive terms. It would also be cool to give some long time members and top contributors to this site a chance at watching over the place.

I think the decision of which posters will be granted moderator status should lie solely with the Admins, as an election would clog the message board with ridiculous polls and infighting.

Agree?

Disagree?

(P.S. - I believe in term limits for EVERYTHING, from message board moderators to local mayors to congressman and senators.)

Are there really that many people who want to be moderators? Seems like a hassle. Mod-quoting would be fun though.

Not a bad idea Gvac, and well put. And I am with Stugots in that giving new people a run at moderating might provide some much needed insight.

It may not happen, but thanks for caring enough to bring it up.

Thank you very much, sir. You're one of the guys who "gets it" and someone I think would be a great choice for a mod.

Again, this is not an attack on the current mods or a desire on my part to see them "demoted."

Quite the opposite.

Sometimes it's good to see how the other half lives.

I was a moderator for quite some time back in the day and enjoyed my return to being a regular poster immensely.

That's pretty much it; Mods can span the entire site but Forum Mods only have authority in their own forum.

Of course the Admins have overarching authority over everybody.

No. I just find this topic somewhat... vague. Although it's very well-written and thought out, I think it's intention falls well short of the mark.

I'm a long time user here. I've never seen people arbitrarily edited and/or banned because of a mod's personal opinions. The only person who has been banned because of a completely bullshit reason recently is... me.

And honestly, we had our discussion about my banning, and it's "whatever".

The sad part is, I won't be able to fully chime in with my opinion without Gvac thinking I'm personally attacking him. My point is, is that the only person who should take issue with the mods or the admins is me because of what happened over the Phillies thing, and you know what? 6 weeks later, I couldn't care less. The place runs fine, it runs better than a lot of other boards, and it's run pretty well for the past 6 years, so I fail to see the problem.

I'm trying to figure out why if something isn't broke, why a person would attempt to fix it, other than for self-aggrandizing issues.

First off, I have absolutely no desire to moderate. Secondly, I've never ascribed to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" school of thought.

Look where that kind of thinking got the American car companies.

It's merely a logical suggestion for improving the site.

GVAC, as a friend, I must say the term limit idea will not work. It's not like there is a large pool of potential mods to choose from. Mods have to spend several hours a day monitoring the site and not many people on here can dedicate that time. I feel like I spend a lot of time posting and lurking on here, but I could not possibly dedicate set amounts of time to to being a mod. I think most people are likely in the same position. If the admins find a good mod that has been shown to dedicate a lot of time on here, then I think they should stick with them.

I skimmed through this thread, so I apologize if this question has already been answered, but has a specific incident made this come up?

Look how it terrifies the current crop to even think of relinquishing power.

So sad.

Huh?

I really don't care if we add or subtract mods

And nobody has any "power."

It's a message board where the staff moderates in their spare time for nothing. It's more an anoyance than anything else, which couldn't be more clear than based on the sheer number of people who refuse a request to become a mod or have quit being one over the years. It's not like we haven't tried to change up the staff drastically in the last couple years...it's that most of the people we've asked don't want the job.

Who said anything about impartiality? You're making up unrealistic and absurd standards that aren't applicable and also ignoring any of the thought out responses to the idea just so you can play the victim. I'm not sure why you assume anyone who disagrees with you or your ideas or your recent patterns of posting here need to be singled out like they did something "wrong" or that their opinions don't stack up with yours.

Nobody HAS to do anything in regards to any of your ideas or discussions.

For all intents and purposes, that's what a moderator of any message board is. They see what happens, they have to make a personal judgement call as to what went down and then typically make another judgement call as to what should be done, if anything.

I'm not sure what you think a moderator of a private realtime public forum is supposed to do otherwise.

Basically they shouldn't personally attack someone that opens up a debate. That's all I'm saying.

what do i care? as long as my sub forum is here I am safe, they are never making me a full mod.

Of course not. The staff bathroom would be destroyed.
Clogged toilet, backhair and jizz all over the shower.
And nobody's lunch would be safe in the fridge.

Sperm is not involved in the creation of new mods. The scientific term for the creation of new mods is call motosis.

Look at how beautifully the United States of America has transitioned from one President, Cabinet, and political party to another.

Do we really think RonFez.net would be thrown into utter chaos with a similar change?

Now that Tall_James and EliSnow have been "promoted" to "real" mods, I think it's time for some good old fashioned house cleaning.

Out with the old, in with the new!

And if you think it's a crazy idea, check out the moderator vote off thread. The first ones to go were the stale, been-here-too-long baby sitters.

Let's stir it up, baby! If anything needs a stimulus package it's this place!

Sometimes change isn't always good. Keep the modship or however they go about choosing mods the way it is.

The people that want or calling out to be a mod just want the alleged power that comes with being a mod. But with great power comes great responsibility and other menial tasks. Fuck the Guardians of Oa and their rules and tasks, Sinestro ain't listening to no one. I mean being a mod isn't all it's cracked up to be and no matter what they do, they won't be able to please everyone or this would be one boring think alike board. Thank goodness it is what it is. It's not perfect but who said it had top be? Think about it.

My issue is usually less about who, but how many. If you fix the second part, you also correct the first part.

Couldn't disagree more.

Change is ALWAYS good when it comes to authoritative figures; even ones as menial as message board moderators.

With your thinking we'd still have Bush as our President, and sports coaches and managers would have jobs for life.

Only the Supreme Court Justices get that treatment, and I disagree with that too.

Change is ALWAYS good when it comes to authoritative figures; even ones as menial as message board moderators. Yeah toppling Saddam really helped us. He was our one time friend of the U.S.

With your thinking we'd still have Bush as our President, and sports coaches and managers would have jobs for life. So in a sense you prefer New Coke over the original coke. Clear Pepsi over the regular Pepsi. See what I did there, I warped your original statement of change is always good and applied it to something else that I percieved your thought would be with how you think about change.

Only the Supreme Court Justices get that treatment, and I disagree with that too. Having random girlfriends instead of a stable relationship is better? But you like change right.

I agree to disagree. I'm sure if there were mod limits you would probably be able to complain about something: It's just becoming a popular contest, not about the issues. You lost your integrity to become a mod, they didn't win cuz they don't go to enough board events for others to know them or hear their message. blah blah blah.

I'm all for a revolution but stabilizing the mess afterwards that's a different story.

No, you changed the original premise of my argument.

I spoke of apples and you equated it with oranges.

And why is it that when someone offers a different point of view or a suggestion for improvement you view it as a complaint?

There are 2 sides to every story. You can't look at the Ying without the Yang, the good without the bad. I'm not looking at your view point as a compliant. I'm discussing the other side of the issue. But the way things are around here, people take offense to offering another view or see it as "attacking" them. But if you think I'm viewing your suggestion as a COMPLAINT maybe I am. (see what I did there?) but I'm not, we're talking and discussing about the issues. Like a debate.
