Korean action comedy thing. Amusing diversion for a Tuesday night. No real complaints at all about it.

I'm currently watching Battlestar Galactica from Netflix, but the last actual movie I watched was almost a week ago and it was All the President's Men, and it was fucking amazing. The end was a bit abrupt and odd, and if you don't appreciate what they were saying with the final spoken words, basically a monologue by Jason Robards (I won't ruin it) you might fucking hate the film because of how it ends, but otherwise if you do get it in a bigger picture kind of way then you'll agree, it is fucking genius. Please stick in in your queue, or rent it from Blockbuster if you're traveling from the past.

My kids and I just watched a family movie On Demand called "My Brother the Pig" starring Judge Reinhold and Eva Mendes. It also starred a 15 year-old Scarlett Johansson who spends a good part of the movie in pajamas.

I don't know how this is going to affect my batching to Scarlett now that I have a vision of this young girl in my head. Hmmmmmmm. I'll report back a little later.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains. Long out of print, it stars a 15 year-old Diane Lane as a punk rock chick whose band (that also includes a very young Laura Dern) ends up on tour with the up and coming Professionals (featuring 2 Sex Pistols and 1 Clash member) and the past-their-prime Metal Corpses (led by Fee Waybill of the Tubes). It's fascinatingly horrible.

I watched Ali G Indahouse, or as I dubbed it "Crazed the Movie". Instead of doing the improv style of the show or Borat it was a really sophomoric scripted movie. Like a Crazed appearance there were a few laughs to be found but it soon got to be annoying and seemed to go on way too long.

They were hamming it up trying to do a satire of a John Woo movie but I've seen enough confusion about it to assume they failed miserably. There is a scene with Monica Belluci more or less naked. I think you can see nips but don't quote me on that.

I just watched a foreign(German) film called In July, and I enjoyed it.

It's from 2000, and I remember reading about it back then, and when I added the film Head On on netflix after catching a few minutes of it on cable I noticed the director had also done this one, so I put this one in my que too.

The director has talent and the movie reminded me a little of an old time romantic comedy.

Sweet film if you don't mind subtitles.

Gaz, I enjoyed the film as well and found there were a lot of laughs for the subject matter - but, I'm wondering were you at all bothered by the fact that right toward the end Kaufman decided to explain his film TWICE before ending it?

That really bothered me, as if he thought we would understand the existential guilt of an under-appreciated artist?!? I thought explaining the point made him look like a weak writer/director... thoughts?

I saw Milk last night and liked it more than I thought I would. I generally don't like biops but this one was original and extremely well done. Sean Penn was as good as everyone says he is if not better. Anyone who is avoiding it because they are uncomfortable to see men kiss are making too much of those scenes. the movie deals with gay relationships including the kissing in a very matter of fact way but you would have to be unusually uncomfortable with gay people to have a problem with it. When those scenes came on in the theater there was absolutely no sense of nervous shifting in seats. Since he has a gay bro, I think Dave will be fine.
Watching it also made me think of Fez a lot. Part of Milk's political strategy was to encourage and force closeted people to come out so heterosexual people are aware they know gay people. then they will have a harder time voting for Prop 6. At one point they force someone on Milk's staff to call his father. I have complete sympathy for Fez's unique mental state but I do look forward to hearing him come out some day. I think everyone who comes out, especially a celebrity, reinforces the idea that being gay is no big deal.

I watched Control, the Ian Curtis biopic, last night. I had heard good things but had avoided it because I generally don't like biopics and I had read Touching From A Distance, and found the story absolutely heartbreaking. I enjoyed the movie enormously. Sam Riley gave an awesome performance. I will caution, for those who haven't seen it that the film is almost, if not just as devestating as the book.

Control was amazing. Samantha Morton was also great.

I just watched Sukiyaki Western Django. Just Miike being Miike - a Japanese spaghetti western which takes place in Nevada, has all the actors speaking in English, (it's difficult at times to even understand), and opens with Quentin Tarantino shooting a snake out of an eagle's claws and cutting it open to remove the whole egg it just swallowed - after killing some dudes he breaks the egg into a bowl and scrambles it.
Just what you'd expect from Miike.

i dunno

first off, it has some fun, finnish travelogue thingies and its cool that Jimmy Pop (from Bloodhound gang) is in 40% of the movie as the guy who stays in West Chester, PA...cuz im a big fan of 2 of the Bloodhound Gang albums

but

they got rid of all the best people that surrounded Bam in Jackass and CKY. No Ryan Dunn, Raab Himself, Brandon Dicamillo and Rake Yohn. None of them are in the movie. They were funny! instead we get a bunch of new people with no personalities. Brandon Novak is in it, but hes not enough. Even Phil and April are barely in it

the biggest sin..no Don Vito! C'mon, Don Vito is gold...gotta have the Don Vito

its worth a watch if its for free...don't pay for it

Just finished watching Dr. Strangelove. I've owned it for awhile but just got around to watching it. I was expecting more of a comedy. The humor was there but a lot of it was dark humor. It was made at the heigth of the Cold War, and that was the subject matter. The hydrogen bomb and the "Doomsday Machine". It took a lot of cues from the Cuban Missile Crisis. Stanley Kubrick helped to write it and he produced and directed it. Peter Sellars played two roles, Dr. Strangelove and a RAF officer. George C. Scott was also good in it.

Watching clouds float by or strangers walk on a sidewalk is more entertaining than this movie.

I saw The Wrestler last night and was pretty well impressed by Mickey Rourke's performance. I wasn't grabbed that much by the movie though. Everything seemed telegraphed. From his collapse in the lockerroom, to the scene in the deli, to the resolutions of his relationships with both Pam and his daughter Stephanie. It seemed like Aronofsky was going for a lot of cheap sentiment. Not to say I wouldn't recommend it, but if it was anyone other than Rourke in the lead I might not. Which is surprising considering the state of his fucking face. Oof. It is grotesque to the point of distraction.

Just watched Gran Turino last night. Great movie. Clint Eastwood plays a curmudgeon like no other.

I saw the preview for that and absolutely want to see it.

I saw Valkyrie last night. I liked the movie but was a bit disappointed by the inconsistency in language. It started off with Tom Cruise speaking German (badly) with English captions and then sort of turned into English. Throughout the movie there are some heavy German accents and then some British ones (though the actors play Germans) and Tom Cruise has his normal American accent. Then once in a while they throw a few German words like Danke in, it is just not well thought out.

Anyway, I had seen documentaries on this story a long time ago and I thought the movie itself was not a bad one at all.

I watched this British horror movie called Black Candles.

A woman and her boyfriend (a defrocked priest) go to her deceased brothers home in England. Things start to go the way of the weird when she realises that her sister in law is a kinky witch who murdered her brother. An avalanche of sex and black magic follows.

At one point this chick fucks a ram, no shit.
She's totally naked, and this ram crawls on her. She is like, face to face with a living, breathing ram. But it's only real when they're face to face. When they use a shot from above, it's this obviously fake goat that she's moving around.

SO fucked up.

Brilliant movie, I cried twice.
I was impressed by how well they portrayed the times from cars to furniture and the style of apartments and felt set back in time myself.
It mainly concentrated on the surveillance of artists as they were the most heavily monitored during that time.

Sadly, the movie I watched last night was total shit. Downtown 81 starring Jean Michel Basquiat - uninteresting, poorly acted and too slow. The only redeeming factor was that there was live in-studio performances by DNA.

I have to say I am sad that there are only so few German movies made every year.
I can honestly say that 90% of the big screen stuff coming out of Germany is brilliantly made and never fails to deliver.

I have a few more on my list I want to see that came out over the past two years.
Some never made it across the Atlantic so I will buy them home and ship them here.

I watched The Thing again last night. When Wilfred Brimley says "I'll Kill You!!" and gets cold cocked by Kurt Russell seconds later I always smile.

Can you suggest some others to us that have actually made into the US? The only German films I know are those made by Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog. Or the older German films, like Nosferatu, Calagari, or the Fritz Lang films. I don't know anything particularly new.

sadly I haven't seen many. The ones that are best known are Run Lola Run, Goodbye Lenin, Anatomy ...

the problem is that most German movies are not even watched by Germans. They crave American/ Hollywood crap and don't appreciate what comes out of their own homes.

Another I have not seen yet is "Gegen die Wand" (Head on) which was suggested to me by someone on the board here.

I actually have to brows the movie galleries to find out about new movies... there is never much press surrounding them.

I also want to see a German comedy called "Keinohrhasen".

Oh and if you want to go further back there is a great one from the Defa Studios from East German times. Its called "The Legend of Paul and Paula". It's a GDR classic and one of my favorites.

a few more to watch:

Der bewegte Mann (Maybe... maybe not)
Mostly Martha
Nowhere in Africa
The Princess and the Warrior
Sonnenallee
Stalingrad

Failan.

Incredibly depressing Korean movie. The wife is crying, I'm close to letting tears out, the whole mood here is down right now.

Wonderful movie. Don't think I ever want to watch it again because of how sad it is but highly recommend it to anyone.

Anyone watch the movie Gerry on IFC with Matty Damon and Benaffleck's brother?

Very, very bizarre.

I thought the whole minimalist concept they were going for was kind of interesting, but I didn't think they pulled it off very well.

It's part of a trio of films from Guz Van Zant. He wanted to explore death over a trilogy. He also made "Elephant" and "Last Days" along with this. I kind of dug "Gerry" cuz I think Casey Affleck is great but its probably not too good as a film.

"Gerry" is the only one of the three i haven't seen, but i liked the other 2 movies a lot. I think especially "Elephant" was very successful. That movie was so tense, since it was so different from anything i've seen before it made me feel so uneasy and uncertain what was going to happen...it was one of the very few times i can say "wow that was a unique movie experience" in a good way

I am trying to complete the 1001 Movies to See Before you Die lists so I'm watching a new movie almost every day. Between Netflix, TCM, IFC, FMC and my library system I watch movies on my lunch break, when I'm up at 4 am with Beer Jr, or on Friday nights if it's a movie Piuki is interested in seeing. The point is I've watched a lot of movies in the last 3 years. I'm up to 300 out of the original 1001.

I just watched Duck Soup. Marx Brothers. It was ok. I preferred Night at the Opera and Horse Feathers, though. Next up 42nd Street.

i watched "Meet the Spartans" yesterday. it was horrible

BUT

it was better than most of the "*blank* movies". Atleast "Meet the Spartans" just spoofed one movie instead of a hodgepodge of movie references that make no sense.

still, it was really bad. I realized these guys that make these "*blank*movies" ( i think they are seltzer & freedman) have 3 jokes. The first is just to reference something in popculture (and meet the spartans had so many outdated references..they have a Sanjaya goof, and a tayra banks "kiss my fat ass" and a lot of other stuff from 2007 i had to struggle to remember)

second joke is "they just start dancing". whatever celebrity imitator or movie scene, let the actors just start dancing. thats the joke

the third is "fake movie ad thats a real ad". Like, they act like they are doing an overly corny movie commercial, yet the product is still being advertised. its horrible

so yeah, "meet the spartans" is horrible. Yet, its slightly less horrible than "date movie" and "epic movie". take that as it is
