Yesterday at Thanksgiving, I was completely driven out of my mind by my girl friend's nephew. He's about 20 or so, and was just a complete jerk all evening, particularly in the way he addressed my chick and I, and his whole "I'm way too cool for the room" vibe.

Now I know its probably not fair to paint all youth with the same brush, but i've just been noticing lately just this immense amount of snarkiness and this kind of "ironic hostility" towards others from persons younger than I...like there's something in them that can't really take others getting over with a funny comment or a witty observation. I wouldn't call it a "I want to be the centre of attention" thing, because for the most part it seems a very subtle, passive aggressive issue. Its almost a "I can't match what youre saying or debate you on what you think, so I'm just going to insert a comical line from a hip television program or internet video to cut you down with, because I'm that cool and hip and on the edge".

(And now to close it up like Rick Reilly)

I don't EVER remember acting like this when I was around that age, and it really wasn't all that long ago. Maybe I was just blind to it at the time? Is the difference in thinking from someone who's 20 and someone who's 25 really as gigantic as it seems? When did this happen? Or has it always been that way?

I just don't understand these kids today....

Maybe this kid is just a douche. He was a douche at 7 and will be one at 57.

There are lots of good kids out there. You just ran into a miserable piece of shit. Console yourself in the fact that he'll probably be miserable for the rest of his life. Forget about him and focus on the positive.

Recently, it was freeeezing outside. Bitterly cold.
I was walking across a parking lot and I saw a small group of hooligans walking across the same parking lot... and two of them were wearing just jeans & Tshirts.

I thought to myself, "fucking kids, put a jacket on!"

And then thought.... "I'm old."

While I think that today's youth matures at a much slower rate than previous generations, the real reason for your disgust is perspective, Mudo.

You're positive you were a lot more respectful when you were this little shit's age because you viewed yourself (and the world) through the eyes of a 20 year old.

He'll seem to be an even bigger douchebag when you're 35.

What is it about kids that being warm isn't cool? We all did the same thing, and now that I'm old I can't understand it either.

And I think a good 80% of 20 year old men are douchebags. I was actually wondering how my father put up with me just last night.

Mine isn't so much a "kids these days" thing, as I see people of all ages doing it, but it's something that's come about in the past few years. I hate it when I go out to dinner and I see guys out on dates with a blue tooth headset clipped to their ear. Gee, classy. God forbid you let your voicemail catch you calls while you're eating dinner with your lady.

I felt the same thing about the lady yesterday who was playing the computer game on her laptop the entire time pre and post dinner while in the room with everyone else

Its that rock n roll poisoning our youth. The way they dance and shake their hips, its from the devil.

You are old.

Wait, you have a girlfriend? I'm getting confused.

EDIT: That's not snark. I really thought Mudo was having a hard time finding a nice girl.

Hold on a cotton-picking minute here.

Mudo, if you're only 25 you don't get to have "these kids today" moments about 20 year olds (other than ironically). I hate to sound like Blowhard here but you don't have the swelling prostate to make those kind of claims yet. Feel free to comment on the inadequacies of say, toddlers up to the age of four. Leave the age-based disparaging of young adults to the true oldtimers, like Tall James and GVAC. Those codgers don't have long for this earth and it's the only enjoyment they have left. :innocent:
