Well after a break up of staggering magnitude is there any music that I can listen to that won't make me want to die?

I'm not being orginal here but Blood on the Tracks has always been the best music for me to listen to after a big breakup. I also like Beck's Sea Change. I also remember throwing in some Motorhead and Big Black between the Dylan divorce songs.

Good luck, man.

Congrats on making your decision, even though it's not easy.

In terms of tunes, I recommend Allman Brothers Band:

Dude, Sea Change is by far my favorite break up album. I even learned how to play a few of those tunes. Bluebird, Lost Cause, fucking amazing, but I want to live.

The funny thing is I am a singer/songwriter genre fan. So every album on my BlackBerry right now is about breaking up in some way or another. I'm going to have to stay away from Ray LaMontagne for about a year I suppose.

great recommendation but Tweedy can be more of a downer for someone who just had a break-up of monumental proportions.

I go with the Black Crowes - Live in San Fran

Fantastic listen and not going to make you slice your wrists.

How about Armed Forces some other early Elvis Costello? I love that stuff for getting in a good mood. "What's so funny about peace love and understanding" alone does it for me.

If you don't want to die then go get a copy of Fear of Music by the Talking Heads ... if for some strange reason you don't already own it.

And if you really, really want to live go get yourself some Fela Kuti records - Open and Close is a good place to start.

I like listening to break up songs after a break up. It reminds me that I'm not the only person to feel that way and it's pretty much universal. Some of my favorite songs are really sad break up songs and I love them the most when I can REALLY feel what they are about.

I judge books by their covers. It eases me through my day.

But in all honesty I did read it. And the thread title is a segway into the real subject.

So the thread title should be more on point about cheery music.

and not bringing up fresh memories..

thats all i was getting at.

back to cover shopping.

the only thing he says is "Bitch I dont give a fuck" over and over and over in every song. i just heard it on saturday. i wish i could remember the song names so i could throw them at you. but lets suffice to say they are clearly targeting suburban 13 year olds from divorced families. absolutley terrible.

True, Time will tell is a tough one too.

I love all those albums, just certain ones are more wrist-slitting than others. I personally like sad albums after a break-up. Pop music just sounds stupid when you are hurting.

Also, anything from Motown.

I use loud rap music to make me feel better during tough mental times. Even those that I don't like that much. The beats and lyrics don't necessarily bring sunshine into my life, but they push everything else out of my mind. I did it just this morning to rid myself of some home worries, and it worked just fine.

Gaslight Anthem-59' Sound. The songs aren't really all that happy, but for some reason it's just soothing. That album "saved my life".

The Clash-Anything they've recorded.

Clutch-Beale Street to Oblivion

Rancid-And Out Come the Wolves

Against Me!-Reinventing Axl Rose. Perfect album for just not thinking of someone.

Coheed and Cambria-No World for Tomorrow. Kicks ass. Rocking album and you can get anger and sadness out with it.

Godspeed good sir. I hoped some of these help. I'd reccomment you stay away from Ben Harper 'Walk Away'. It just made me more miserable.
