I'm on board in a big way with the neti pot users of the world.

For those unfamiliar, it's an ancient practice from India that involves flushing the sinuses and nasal cavity with salt water and a buffering agent, usually sodium bicarbonate.

It's incredibly quick, easy, and painless and leaves you feeling amazing. It's also supposed to stave off sinus infections, and I hope that's true. I seem to get one every year and it's pure misery.

I've been meaning to get one of these. Sinus infections suck. Maybe I'll add it to my Amazon wish list.

You fill the pot with warm water and a solution of salt and baking soda, breathe through your mouth, tilt your head, and pour. It flows in one nostril and right out the other.

You don't taste anything, and it feels awesome.

And seriously...try the neti pot. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Mine was 15 bucks, and it came with 30 packets of solution, which is just salt and baking soda.

You can make your own or buy more.

Love the neti pot, though I do have mini-panic attacks when I use it. I have a hole in one of my eardrums and I am always terrified that the water will somehow get into my ear canal. But aside from my irrational fear it is awesome.

You can breathe so deeply after the cleansing that you'll be filled with oxygen and you won't need cocaine.

If you still crave it, though, I won't judge.

It's supposed to flush and moisturize the lining of your nasal cavity, so I would assume the answer is yes.

The first time I used it I blew out a bit of reddish fluid, which I assumed was dried blood that had been loosened up and washed away.

DiabloSammich

Ok, so one time I used Afrin, where you snorted what was basically saline up your nostril to loosen up the gunk, and I seriously wanted to put a bullet in my head after I did it.

This sounds a lot like Afrin. And I really shouldn't be pushed any closer to violence.

I neti daily. I don't use bicarbonate of soda, though, just sea salt. I made it through the fall with barely any allergy symptoms, and I used to get it bad. Can't say enough good things about the neti.

Neti pot..FTW!
I bought one a couple of months ago at the tail end of a really bad sinus/head cold. The post nasal drip lingered for ever and I didn't want to take any antibiotics or shit that I knew wouldn't really help. I used it for about a week and was amazed at how much it helped. I haven't used it since then but just lately have been feeling a bit congested so i should pull it out and give it another shot.
My cousin was freaked and asked me if it felt like I was drowning, LOL.

Wow, I don't even know how to react to that. I actually think I need to pick up a neti pot 'cause I just snarfed my tea while reading this.

I am also one of those people leery of the drowning feel to use it, but does anyone know if it helps at all with snoring? Maybe I'll try to get the hubby in on it, too.

 Seriously, this explains a lot. I heard about using salt water to clean out your sinuses but the instructions I got were COMPLETELY wrong. I used salt water and a nasal aspirator to inhale and squirt plain salt water up my nose. It hurt like hell and I ended up gagging and hurling.

Apparently I was missing key components like a buffering agent, proper equipment, and the necessary technique.

I just got home from work and the first thing I did was head straight for my neti pot. I'm in and out of the truck all day and going from the heat to the cold and back again always stuffs me up. I swear, in only a few seconds I could breathe normally again.

This sounds a lot like Afrin. And I really shouldn't be pushed any closer to violence.

Afrin is a lot different. First of all with the netipot, the liquid is going in one nostril and out the other, which doesn't happen with Afrin. I used one of those saline sprays once and the drip down my throat was disgusting. The other thing is that Afrin contains a OTC med (a decongestant) while the netipot solution is just salt and water.

boosterp
12-18-2008, 02:27 PM
Afrin is also addicting and you should heed the warning label.

Saline solution has been used in dryer climates to keep the sinuses moisturized for years. This Neti only takes it a step further.

If I could only do that with beer and have a similar effect I'd be set.

There's nothing like that first time you clean out your sinuses. I've been chasing the dragon ever since!

For my fellow hardcore sinus sufferers, may I suggest the ultimate cleanser:

Their saline mix contains eucalyptus and other ingredients.
Their spray contains hot pepper elements. (capsascian)

OK...let's suppose you have a toilet full of feces. Basically you're pouring in a cup of clean water whereas I'm flushing it.

That's the difference between a nasal spray and the neti pot.

I love my neti!!

You can find them in various forms (pot, squeeze bottle) at CVS (Walgreens, not so much unfortunately). It's not scary to use because you're not sucking anything in through your nose, you just have to relax and let the water flow through using the natural momentum from the angle you're pouring at.

I've just improvised with one of my boy's sippy cups. That was fantastic. Now I need one. It's especially good if you've ever had your face crushed once or twice over the years. I don't think I was ever aware of how f'd up my sinuses were.

It's interesting to me some of the ways Indians dig into their bodies where in America we'd never think to... or even in the west I guess. My favorite part of a yoga book I bought once describes feeding a roll of gauze into the stomach and then pulling it all back out. Awesome. I'm doing that next.

Well... someday maybe.

I discovered this thing when I had been prescribed by a doctor to use a Birminghan Nasal Douche and Alkalol to flush out a sinus infection. It was so unusual and effective and I searched it out and saw that the Netti was much more widely used, and I went and got one and have loved it since. I use mine with Alkalol. They have this stuff behind the counter at most pharmacies, and you just have to ask for it, no prescription needed. Its amazing. It is a mucous dissolver.

it does, depending on how stuffed it is. It says to blow the nose before use anyway, but if it is really stuffed up you may be better off with one of the squirt bottles as it has a bit more pressure to flush out the stuffy nose

did you make sure to get all the water out after you were done? cause I thought about this, I had a bad sinus headache the day after I used mine the first time but I also did not do anything to get the water out and I felt like I had some in my ears.

Well I finally convinced my b/f to try the neti-pot. He is chronically addicted to sinus meds, well it didn't go so well. It would not even go into his sinuses at all let alone drain out the other side. He said a bit did go down into his mouth but not much at all. I think the squeeze bottle may be what he needs to get shit started and begin to loosen up. The worst part right now is that on top of the sinus med shit he has a bad cold (compliments of me) so it is even worse.
I know that if I could get him using something like this I think he could get off the sinus meds.

I got one the other day and finally convinced myself to try it last night. I too had the problem that the liquid went in my nostril but most of it came out my mouth or went down my throat. Eventually I did get it to work as expected but didn't get the nasal orgasm that GVAC promised me. I wonder if this is the first time he has failed to deliver on that promise.

If the solution is going in your mouth or down your throat, you're breathing through your nose. You have to breathe through your mouth and close off your nasal passages, just like you do when you're pretending you have a stuffed head and want to talk nasally.

As far as johnniehardrock's headaches, I've never heard such a thing before in my entire life. Why irrigating your sinuses for a few brief seconds would cause pain is beyond me. Are you using warm (not hot or cold) water? It should feel soothing and relaxing, and both sides should be done in under two minutes.

You would never being doing any harm. You're merely irrigating your sinuses and moistening the linings of your nasal passages. Don't you practice Yoga? The squeeze bottle really does a better job of cleaning me out. The trick is to squeeze rather lightly and you'll yield much more "fruit".

This is a Neti Pot -

You fill it with warm water and a solution of salt and baking soda. It completely flushes out your sinuses, moistens your nasal cavity, and keeps it free from infection.

Indians have been using it for centuries as part of the purification process before they practice yoga and many doctors are now recommending it to patients who frequently contract sinus infections.

I swear by the thing. After a "flushing" I feel like I can breathe deeper than I ever thought possible.

Felt a slight bit of congestion starting. Just used my neti pot an hour ago. I feel fine and dandy.

It's a wonderful thing: I was introduced to the neti pot by a girl I grew up next to. She's five years older than me, and I grew up having a mad crush on her. Friends with her brother, she was the hot older sister, etc. Several months ago I heard she came back from teaching in Spain, so I asked her out. We dated for a bit. Got nothing to do with the neti pot itself, but I felt like sharing a personal achievement.

fezident

Negative.
Do not use that water bottle!

The specially made squeeze bottles that some of use have a straw that connects the opening to the fluid inside. It goes down the bottom of the bottle. This means, with very very little pressure... you'll get a nice gentle, even flow of the saline solution with no backwash.
And when the waterbottle "burps", you'll basically just be blasting air directly into your sinus cavity. Prob not good for you. Or, at the very least, a complete waste of time.

The waterbottle would require too much squeezing force and it won't shoot a stream into your sinuses. You'll prob just end up with fluid all over your countertop.

ALSO... you absolutely NEED to purchase the saline packets. If you just fill it with water, you'll really burn yourself up there. Something to do with the Ph and all that good stuff.

Also, I was stuffy again in about 10 minutes.

Do you start with the stuffed nostril, or the opposite?

Why is it that the solution is also running out of my mouth?

Does warmer water mean better rinse?

(1) Yes. It's possible to use a neti pot incorrectly.
(2) Start with the unstuffed nostril. Be sure you're tilting your head to one side.
(3) You have to close off your soft palate and breathe through your mouth.
(4) You can't exactly use cold water. Warm water loosens things up better.

also start off by blowing your nose to loosen the stuffy side... it may be clogged up by a dried up crust which is harder to break with just the water rinse

I could have used a neti pot back when I was doing coke. There were times that my nose was so clogged, I couldn't do another line.

I'd rather wake up after a party night blowing out cartilage and blood clots than trying to get rid of kosher salt grains.

Try buying a netipot without expired salt that's clumped together, and using some warm water... Better yet, fuck it, go ahead and snort coarse salt.

Oh, back in my college days. Little money, crap dealer.

It's that time of year, folks.

If you haven't been using your Neti pot all along, dust it off and use it now!

Hey Rhino...how old is your boy?

I want all the wimps who say "I could never pour water into my nose!" to look at that picture and feel really badly about themselves.
