View Full Version : I'm thinking of getting rid of my land line

For a while I had a special deal with Verizon where I could "bundle" (whatever that means) my cell and landline for "spectacular" savings. I was pretty happy with the deal-- both lines for $75. I don't use the phone much at all. I mostly use my cell and I liked having the land line available for $25/mo. I guess my special deal ended because December's bill was $113. January's bill is $115.

I don't even use all 450 minutes per month on my cell phone. I liked the idea of keeping the land land because I've had it for 18 years and the relatives who talk to me know it.

If I can't get my phone bill back down to $75 I'm going to cancel my land line. Trouble is, I've had it for 18 years and I need to tell people to call my cell. I know, it's a lot like moving (but I bought my apt so I wouldn't HAVE to move!).

ANYHOOO---

on my list of people to tell call my cell:

Friends (I can do that in an e-mail)
WORK!
MY various doctors
The vet
My credit cards
My mortgage company

PSE&G (and please consider those 4-page folded pamphlets that get stuffed in your bill. You know, the ones with the evil snowman. I'm not sure how good the guarantees are, but you're keeping at least one proofreading in business if you ask them!

Comast
My insurance company
CAR insurance
LIFE insurance
My condo association
DMV

I'll "do" the local food places that take orders for delivery by phone number as I eat my way through 2009.

This is a pretty good list so far. Anyone I may have forgotten?

I can tell this is going to be somewhat of a disaster. Sometimes I leave my cell in another coat pocket or under my car seat. It shouldn't be TOO bad-- no one calls me and those who do know better know to e-mail me.

I inherited my house from my mother. For the past two and a half years I've been paying Verizon for a land line. I don't think I've used it more than 5 times. I just don't want to give up the phone number......it's been the same for 37 years......

You know my pain! $51 just to keep the land line KILLS me, especially since lay-offs are eminent.

I remember my home telephone number as a kid. It was a small area, and although it was actually two towns, we shared the same area code and the same exchange. We all exchanged phone numbers with 4 digits!

I know you can keep the number if you get high speed internet phones. Can you move your landline number to a cell?

You seem to have done a 180 since this thread. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=45452)

I did it and it's one of the better moves I've made in the past few years. I was always one of those people who wanted to keep that landline. Mainly because until the past few years coverage hasn't been nearly as good as it is now.

I take my cell everywhere and it's clear everywhere. It was time to ditch the landline.

Well, $51 is a lot of money. It's a week's grocery bill for one person! Why pay forsomething I don't use? The reason I kept it was for nostalgia and my older relatives. Most of them have e-mail.

xfr it to your cellphone, f-it.
Hell, you could start another line on your current plan, port your lan line number to the new cellphone number, if you just want that number associated with yourself.

I dont get why these companies want to charge so much for a phone, and then force us to read articles on how much business they're losing with home phones...not like they've upgraded the lines in 50 years.

I use the magic jack at home, that way I can keep my cell minutes at a minimum. It's cheap, and works good.

Just curious, why does the DMV need your phone #?

Ditch the land line.

Then go and clean out your closets. Find one thing you can part with, and do it.

Feels great.

I have an alarm system on my homes that requires landlines to call central monitoring. So I must maintain landlines. You could try putting your landline on call forwarding to your cell as of right now and establish it as your main number and tell all who call your "new " number.

i had a landline up until last fall, mostly for emails, dump it,who likes people calling all the time tryin to get you todonate to their charity?so you lose your name in the yellow book, theres worst things that can happen.send out a mass text message and emails what your new primary number will be,call the rest,im on the nights and weekends plan too,and if people cant understand that thats the best time to call just let their call go to voice mail and call em back after 7,after a month they'll get the hint

I know you can keep the number if you get high speed internet phones. Can you move your landline number to a cell?

We had verizon for cellphone/landline/and internet. The internet connection was crappy and we hardly ever used the landline so we decided to get rid of it. Since the cell was verizon, they allowed us to transfer our landline number to the cellphone. The only drawback was that anyone who knew us through our cellphone number had to be notified that it had been changed. We figured this was the lesser of 2 evils since the cellphone contacts were more tech savy (not old relatives or companies).

We also got rid of verizon DSL and went with Comcast for internet (but that's another story)

I'm not sure if verizon would let you transfer a landline number to another cellphone provider but it would be worth a try.

After we got rid of the landline we got one of these. works fine, but most of our calls come through the cell now.

I've been wanting to do the same thing for a while since I rarely use the damn thing. But then I'd have to get a cell phone.

We dropped our landline a few months ago and it has gone ok so far. I can never hear my cellphone ring, so I miss lots of calls. I recently changed my ringer to something a little louder so hopefully that'll help. The only other concern we ever have is making sure that anyone babysitting the kidlets knows they must bring a working cellphone. No problems yet!

Good luck!

I wish we could get rid of our landline. I hate ours. Anyone who wants to get in touch with me knows to call my cell phone. All of the calls to our landline are solicitors or calls for my wife (who often forgets to carry or charge her phone).

I got rid of my land line three years ago and never missed it. I recently signed up for the "triple play" from my cable company because it was actually the exact same price to get TV, internet, and home phone as it was to just get TV and internet.

In the three plus months I've had it, I think I've used the land line 3 times.

Pretty useless.

Landline free for 4 years, no problem at all. Happy with internet through the cable company. Keeping track of where my cell is and giving my area code to pizza places is the only downside.

I just called up Verizon this morning and put in the request to get mine cancelled.

With cell phones and calling now built into Gmail I don't see a need for an old phone line anymore.

Great Idea!

I got rid of my landline over 6 years ago and dont miss it. The one thing I used to hate was giving my cell to people and businesses that I didnt want to have it but once I got magicjack and google voice that has changed. I give everyone my google voice # as my home phone and its mine for free forever (lets hope)

My power is unreliable (LIPA sucks) and my area has crappy cell coverage (fuck you all you fucking NIMBY fuckleheads!) so I keep the land line.

I fucked up and got hooked into a deal with my cable company where they offered three things and I bit right onto it.
1] cable
2] internet
3] phone
$115.00 a month
If I drop my landline cable and internet will be $150.00 a month.

What cable company you got???

I did the same thing with Comcast in 2005. Once my trial period (2 years) were up I called and said I didnt want my bill to go up, while keeping the same stuff. They reenlist me every 6 months. Then I cancelled my land line and it knocked $40 / month of my bill.
