My wife asked me this question, and I'm not sure.

Are a husband and wife considered relatives?

I always thought relatives implied blood.

The best kind of relative - the kind you choose as opposed to just an accident of birth. Also, your wife can't be made to testify against you (santity of marriage). I don't think that applies to other relations.

lol, so ultimately you guys are saying you're only relatives by blood? I kinda with Judge Smails though.

I think so. I mean when someone is in the hospital and they say that only "relatives" can visit, a husband or wife is allowed in.

Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines relative as "a person connected with another by blood or affinity."

It also defines affinity as "relationship by marriage."

So yes.

The taboo thing is if you were related before you got married.

Husband and wife are not related, they create relatives by swapping bodily fluids. Just by being married does not make them related, marriage is a legal contract.

It looks like you can be a relative by blood or marriage. So a wife and husband are related when maaried, but would cease to be if divorced.

that's why there is the term "blood relatives".

You can have nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts you are not related to by blood.

Why don't you do one of those genealogy things. Are you two the same nationality?

Also, your wife can't be made to testify against you (sanity of marriage).

there is no sanity in marriage, it is insane (I should know, I've been married 13 years.) there is however, sanctity of marriage. but that only goes one way: a husband can testify against his wife. pretty old school, but that's the law.

Was your wife asking if you were related because you are married, or if you were related before you got married? there is such a concept as "related by marriage", which of course only lasts as long as the marriage.

A wife can tesitfy against her husband too. The difference pointed out before was that a person cannot be forced to testify against their spouse. They can do so voluntarily.

However, they can't testify about what their spouse told them during the marriage. That's called the spousal privilege (like the attorney client privilege).

She was asking if we were related BECAUSE Of marriage. We definitely weren't related before we were married. Her entire family is still in Japan and my family is Italian, and they all came here during the 50's/60's/
