Far too many people make the mistake of thinking they "know" someone because they "know" them from a message board. I know "mikeyboy" very well, but do I really know Michael? I don't think so.

You're sounding like CHUCKWAGONCOOK. I think you know exactly what people mean when they refer to "board characters", and no, "Gvac" would not be considered a board character.

I posted this a few weeks back during the board character controversy, so it should help.

I don't really have a problem with board characters. I'll roughly define them because too much of this argument is pinned on what a board character is. If you post on a message board, you have a user name. Except in vary rare instances, that user name is not your actual name. Having such a user name does not make you a board character. If you post differently than you act in your normal life (more aggressive, lie about some details of your life, etc.), that does not make you a board character. A board character is an alias created by a user that is for instance, a celebrity or character from a book, tv show, movie, etc., or some stereotypical character and the user posts as if they were that celebrity, character, etc. Board characters are sometimes very funny when used sparingly. I won't out his characters, but Tall_James is probably the master at using his board characters in spots. The vast majority of this board, however, isn't really all that funny when using board characters. I'll note here that I don't really consider GvacMobile, Gregory Joseph or GvacNoMore to be board characters. TigerWoods, Creepy McFlirt and AngryAsianGuy are board characters. The reason we've had to limit the characters somewhat is that many of our users (as with using tags for anonymous personal attacks or the [you] tag), don't have the good judgment in using them. The board character gimmick is getting overdone and ends up polluting the content on the board with lots of nonsense. We've heard people complain that threads don't stay on topic. The overuse of board characters makes it even worse. It's really an interest in keeping a few people who overuse the characters to make the board a little more readable for everyone else.

I will add that another example of a board character is when someone creates another user account so they can anonymously say things that they are afraid to have their "regular" user name say. Actually, I'm not even sure that's a board character. That's just kind of shitty.

Ha! I'm sorry it gets real sometimes, Mojo, but many of us out here in the NYC area have met each other numerous times and hung out privately away from board events.

I've met some really, really great people who are true friends of mine now, and I've met some of the biggest phonies on the planet. People you really thought you knew but it turned out everything about them was false.

I think that gets lost with a lot of people sometimes. They're sure they really know "applejack678" or whatever, but once they start discovering the real person behind the posts, they might find out he's a child molester or a murderer.

That's why I always say it's funny that board "characters" are shit on but "real" screen names are viewed as sacred by some.

This message board, just like real life, is full of wonderful, genuine people and a bunch of scumbags as well.

I 'll take this one Lenny. Chuckwagoncook (I call him Lenny) is my roomate when I'm in Florida. The reason I go to Florida is to be with Uncle Tommy:glurps: He's my Dad's twin brother. When my Dad died from in a train wreck in India, Uncle Tommy took care of me. He also thinks it's a good idea I visit my Mom in Burlington too. I never really knew her that much. Her and my Dad got divorced when I was 2 years old. My Dad got custody of me.
I do spend a lot of time in Vermont with my Mom and her New Boyfriend. (I don't like him, he's a Hell's Angel.) I have a job there at a bookstore. They let me straighten up the books when I'm around. They're nice people.

The short answer is no.

I don't really have a problem with board characters. I'll roughly define them because too much of this argument is pinned on what a board character is. If you post on a message board, you have a user name. Except in vary rare instances, that user name is not your actual name. Having such a user name does not make you a board character. If you post differently than you act in your normal life (more aggressive, lie about some details of your life, etc.), that does not make you a board character. A board character is an alias created by a user that is for instance, a celebrity or character from a book, tv show, movie, etc., or some stereotypical character and the user posts as if they were that celebrity, character, etc. Board characters are sometimes very funny when used sparingly. I won't out his characters, but Tall_James is probably the master at using his board characters in spots. The vast majority of this board, however, isn't really all that funny when using board characters. I'll note here that I don't really consider GvacMobile, Gregory Joseph or GvacNoMore to be board characters. TigerWoods, Creepy McFlirt and AngryAsianGuy are board characters. The reason we've had to limit the characters somewhat is that many of our users (as with using tags for anonymous personal attacks or the [you] tag), don't have the good judgment in using them. The board character gimmick is getting overdone and ends up polluting the content on the board with lots of nonsense. We've heard people complain that threads don't stay on topic. The overuse of board characters makes it even worse. It's really an interest in keeping a few people who overuse the characters to make the board a little more readable for everyone else.

And of course eastphillyTed was a character. I thought that was obvious. I created "him" solely for the fact of stirring shit up with Mets and Giants fans. He was the stereotypical, ignorant fan. MANY, MANY people were in on the joke. I was getting a kick out of getting Snoogans riled up as him, but I would have told him it was me eventually.

It wasn't out of cowardice, it was for humor. I go into the chatroom of the Fandick show under aliases sometimes just to get Bossanova riled up, because that's when he's at his best. After the show I tell him it was me, because if I was in there as "Gvac" he would laugh off my attacks and insults instead of genuinely getting angry.

Just so you know, there is NOTHING I would say here that I wouldn't say to somebody's face. I don't use characters that way. They're used solely for humor's sake when I create them.
