View Full Version : Does a card need an envelope to be effective?

Someone gave me a card today with no envelope. They just handed me the card. They said "Here we got this for you". It didn't even say "To..." I didn't fake an excited feeling. It seemed like an after thought. If it had a envelope, at least some suspense would have been built up. What are your thoughts? This is a serious discussion so no there is no poll.

usually, i think. definitely b-day cards are better that way (especially if the gift is a check).
even the little cards on flower arrangements are better with envelopes.

Unless the card is made for you by a child then its absolutely necessary for it to be in an envelope. It comes with the card when you buy it!! This person doesn't think much of you.

Congratulations card.

Meh.

Should you put it in an envelope? Certainly. Should you whine about not having an envelope? No way you ungrateful bastard.

I wasn't whining I just feel like it made the card less interesting.

What if it was a "Franken Berry" themed congrats card? That would rule.

If someone pasted Franken Berry on a piece of paper and handed it to me and said Congrats. I'd be more excited than what I got.

you didn't specify who gave you the card or your relationship to that person. i know that may not be any of my business, but i think that it makes a difference in how you should feel about it.

Personally I'd be annoyed if anyone gave me a card in the first place. I'm not a fucking six year old.

Are cards even effective in the first place?
They are one of the many things I just don't understand. I hate getting cards, man. I never know what to do with them, and I don't want to throw them away because I feel like an asshole.

....I don't want to throw them away because I feel like an asshole.

I get a few cards for my Birthday and Christmas. They're mostly from my Mother and Daughter's.
They're not out of the envelope more than 10 seconds before they're tossed in to the garbage.

A card needs to serve a purpose. Either it's attatched to a gift to let you know who it's from, or it's holding money or a gift card. If it's not doing either of these things, then it's your job to figure out a new purpose. Any ideas?

Congratulations card.

What occasion?

Well - that doesn't even matter. No - you need an envelope. The end.

A card is about something being ... je ne se qua... (i've never attempted that spelling in my life)

sealed and new. Fresh.

You got a stale card.

A card is a physical proxy for a feeling - guys don't dig em. The envelope represents a journey. No effort was put into your stale card that you don't dig anyway. Buy a guy a beer if you want to congratulate him.

You kiddin? One of my top 3 experiences in life includes spending 3 autumn days in Avignon with an old, not gf, what's the other term? that was studying there. Baguettes, wine and good good times. I could not communicate with her host family at all but they were awesome people too.
