anything to insulate the tank with? foil? blankets? towels? anything that will cover up exposed surfaces of the tank...
a stupid question, can you get hot water?

You might find something to measure the temp and pull them out of the tank and put them in the warm water.

Seriously. Shouldn't the water be treated before adding it to the tank?
If you change the temperature to quickly will it shock the fish?

Will the tank fit in your tub...?
Maybe you can put warm water in the tub, and set the tank in it...

Urinate in the water. That'll provide some nice warm salty water.

Actually it doesn't sound like you are doing that bad. I think a 10-degree (F) drop in temp (from 85) is pretty survivable for these fish. Do you have real plants in there?

ooofff... when your laptop does die, duct tape that fucker to the tank, if it gets half as hot as mine you should be good.

gradual temp reduction is ok. fish easily acclimated to slow changes. its that sudden swift change, especially in a 30 that will throw them off. besides, 85 is mega high to run your tank.
what do you have?

in a situation like that, its best to wrap the tank in towels, or a comforter.
its not the temp that you have to worry about. its the lack of oxygen and water movement.

really at 85? I feel like i am abusing my fish now by keeping it between 72 and 78

your water collects in a tank which is your water heater. until it cools down you have a few gallons of hot to warm water
