Wife and I awoke to random yelling which degenerated into a bullhorn yelling: "John at 4211 Cora, come out of the house with your hands up." Being directly next door, we sprang to the door to see 8 rollers. a cycle and about 30 cops (some with machine guns) lolling around our yard. Then wife's car was cordoned off as part of the crime scene. Then 5 Swat team guys and 2 face painted snipers rolled in. BOOM! Then extremely addled 90 year old grandfather was stuffed into the back of a roller. Then the forensic van pulled up (now THAT'S an awesome Winnebago).

A) How am I going to get coffee?

B) I wish i did not flush all that cocaine now.

Tragic fucking shit. Apparently our 92 year old neighbour has been acting strange and showing extreme signs of dementia over the past few days. He was due to be taken to the doctor this morning for evaluation. According to one non-family member who lives there. he heard a strange noise upstairs this morning, which he originally attributed to the 15 year old autistic boy who lives there. He went up to investigate and saw the daughter twitching and bloody under a blanket. The old man had shot his own daughter at point-blank range with a shot gun in her sleep. The old man then turned the gun on this non-family member and looked him in the eye, but then turned away instead of firing and went up to the next level where he shot his adult grandson (we think) in the stomach. The police then showed up and eventually battered the door down, shot the family rottweiler who was protecting the old man and took him into custody. The autistic son got out unharmed. The condition of the 2 victims is unknown.

We didn't know them extremely well, but would have brief conversations in passing, and I would frequently here the autistic son cooing whenever I would play music. I often visited the dogs over the fence in the back yard. Sad and weird.

We were accosted by a news team on our way out who really wanted to goad us into putting some kind of spin on the story: "What were they like?" Who fucking cares? How does that ever matter? Especially when the reason for the shooting was someone slipping out of the bridle of reality. Fucking pathetic.

I hate to be Debbie Downer about this, but this has shaken me a bit. It turns out the old man surrendered, and when the police moved in to get the injured (head wound) daughter, that the Rottweiler was on top of her, protecting her so fiercely that the police had to shoot and kill the dog (who I would visit over the fence every fucking day). I heard that shot and it shows up in the news video. Sad. Fucking sad.

Wow. That's really sad. I know they had no choice but it's a shame the dog had to die. If she survives, that's going to be hard news to take. I wonder how old they were when they were adopted. The age difference between the "kids" and the old man was pretty huge.

It's very sad about the Rotty, who I just adored, but I understand the importance of getting a head trauma victim to a hospital as soon as possible. Just tragic. Kind of sweet, in a way, that the dog was so loyal that she was ready to go down with the ship for her owner.

Sad dog story part II is that the other family dog, an enormous, year old great dane who I also loved visiting over the fence, was unharmed but had to be taken away by animal control. I was in my back yard when the AC (sic) people showed up and the dane was very confused and scared, but recognized me and ran over for some pets. I went over and got a leash on her, led her out of the yard and got her into the truck. It just killed me. If I didn't have a dog who would be violently opposed to having this sweet dog in the house, I would have adopted on the spot. I was the only person around she knew and she huddled close and trusted me absolutely. She's a wonderful, beautiful, healthy dog who will have no problem getting adopted, but I still felt a little like I sold her out by sending her away with strangers. Both dogs will be sorely missed.

I know what you were trying to say, but... I somehow think this is something a psycho would say to a rape or mutilation victim in a horror movie.:help:

I am surprised they actually included the coffee line in that clip. An earlier version was way more severely edited. Of course, this version was pretty hacked down as well. They really seemed to be fishing for that classic: "they were always so quiet and normal" line. I even said that to the reporter. They WERE all nice, including the shooter. But whether good or evil, dementia meant grandpa was operating outside of reality, so how they acted, even falsely, within reality is irrelevant.

I hope the kid has somewhere to go. Do you know if there is more family that can take care of him? In a perfect world, he'll have other family members to take him in, and maybe even take the dog, too.

Yes, this has been my main concern. It is not easy to place a severely autistic kid.

The dog is a one-year-old Great Dane with little or no autism and is going to be no problem. She looks like a velvety horse and has a lot of love to give.

Shit! It keeps sounding worse!

Dogs tend to be the exact opposite of autistic. But they do sometimes show savant qualities.

BTW... I had a friend with a Great Dane many years ago. The dog's name was Nigel (named after the XTC song "Making Plans for Nigel"). He had two cool things he would do. He would pick up my son by the back of his diaper and carry him around, and he'd also climb up the ladder at a local playground sliding board, and slide down.
