You have to look at the context and see if you can discern the intent. Sometimes it's not an easy call and sometimes it's very easy. And the mods and admins have made mistakes in the past about this. That's why warnings are given rather than outright bans, or you have shorter bans versus permanent bans. And bans have been lifted for such reasons.

And I completely I agree with you on this. As an insider, you are privy to friendships that some of us are not. So that being said, you are aware of what someone on this board, the particular attacked person in question, would consider to be offensive to them.

I agree that it is hard to come upon the decisions of whether or not to warn or ban. But, I still maintain that what is offensive to one may not be to another. So, again, why not warn each person making a derogatory remark to another member, regardless if you know them or not.

Again, Eli, this is not a critique of you in this situation but I bet that many people here have had things said to them on this board that at one point they found to be an attack.

But, without anyone to defend them, they are alone to try and defend themselves.

Would you read and respond to PMs every time someone felt personally attacked? Would any mod or admin? Would a mod or admin warn someone like a school teacher through PM if they another member tattled to them?

I'm sure that if someone made a comment about me that was derogatory, I would have little to no support from a mod or admin, let alone other members. But, I guess that's because I don't carry friendships beyond this message board with members.

So, regardless whether or not Chuck's comment was an attack or not, I guess we have to take into account the fact that unless people personally know one another, you should be able to just say "It was just a stranger making a comment. Fuck them in their pie hole"

First, this program existed long ago and would exist without the whole country. And this Board has existed even when the show as not national.

Second, there is a difference between personal attacks aimed at one specific member and stereotypical jokers about groups of people. You cannot justify a personal attack on a member because the show or boards makes fun of hayseeds.

The joke in question was about a female member getting an abortion. I thought it may be a personal attack, but realized it arguably was not. So I warned and didn't ban. It was not similar to making fun of hayseeds.

No. There shouldn't be a double standard. Sometimes the treatment of a personal attack differs because not all are caught, and different mods may see a slightly different line in the sand as far as what is and isn't an attack. We try to define attacks, but unfortunately, there is a certain amount of judgment inherent.

Also, I may have missed something, but why was this even an issue? I understand now that some people feel that there is inequitable treatment of the members of this board. It certainly isn't intentional, but human nature will get the best of all of us sometimes. Where was the unequitable treatment though? Eli thought a comment was out of bounds and stated as much. There was no banning, no infraction, not even an explicit warning -- just a note that the comment probably crossed the line to let the poster know that future comments could get them in hot water. Why everyone is so up in arms over this I honestly can't understand.

On a related note, there is a fine line between attacks and ball-busting. the thing is that ball-busting requires a certain level of trust. If you're ball-busting with someone, there has to be a certain understanding between the two parties that the comments made aren't serious. You can't just take a shot at someone you aren't friends with and turn around and say you were just ball-busting when they get offended. That's just a cheap tactic.
