View Full Version : Five Guys vs. In-N-Out...declare your allegiance!
As I sit here finishing off a standard Five Guys cheeseburger w/ fries, I can't help but reminisce about In-N-Out burgers of Vegas trips past.
For a long time, I've wrestled with this question, and have finally come to an answer.
In-N-Out is better.
Better everything...meat, veggies, styles, buns (which is shameful, since everyone knows the superior bread is on the East Coast).
I will give Five Guys the nod on fries. That peanut oil makes a downright sick fry.
But West Coast is the best coast.

cheeseburgers are best with bbq sauce, hot sauce and bacon.
Fries are best with "louie's sauce" cheese, bacon and chives.
I vote: buffalo stylee!!!

The further away from DC you get, the more ordinary the Five guys burgers are. I remember In n Out being more consistant, but it's probably been 20 years since I've been to one.
We just got a 5-Guys near me, I'm hoping to try it soon.

That is absolutely true. I stayed in N. Virginia for a summer and 5 guys was the best burger I had ever eaten. Since then, I've had it in several other states and it's still good, but not as good.
Also, near DC they fill the bags up with fries and they don't do that at other locations.

I have to admit, after all the Five Guys hype on R&F, when I finally stopped at the one here in Parsippany I wasn't impressed. I still go there but they're just average burgers and fries nothing spectacular.

To a degree, you have to temper your expectations.
People talk like they're the greatest burgers ever, but most restaurants can prepare better gourmet burgers than Five Guys or In-N-Out
What you really should be comparing it to is McDonalds, Burger King, etc, because they're all fast food burgers.
And as far as that goes, both are MUCH better than typical fast food burgers, because they're prepared better.
The fries are hit or miss with most people. People either love the Five Guys fries, or hate them.
In-N-Out fries are solid.

I actually did a 10 page paper on In-N-Out burger for a Hospitality Management course. That employees start at over $10 an hour, managers can make 6 figures, they only promote from within, the meat is never frozen (in fact they grind all meat fresh daily and have plants within 200 miles of EVERY restaurant) are a number of the reasons I'd give them a nod, not knowing anything about Five Guys or even having eaten there.
Plus, In-N-Out has never franchised, all locations are owned by the family. Five Guys did start franchising a few years ago.
Plus, I've eaten their burgers in San Diego, and they are fucking fantastic (along with the shakes).

I go to the one in Parsippany all the time and I have to disagree, those burgers and fries kick everyones ass. It's funny you mention that particular location because the sheer amount of times I am there sitting listening to Ron and Fez on my headphones is amazingly high. Of course so is my cholesterol.

I used to love Fatburger but I went their recently (Rockaway, NJ) and I was really disappointed, I forgot how annoying it was in terms of wait for the burger and the fact that they still do not have BBQ sauce as a side yet. Man now I want to go smoke a joint and eat a huge greasy burger....

I vote 5 Guys. There is something about a greasy burger wrapped in foil that makes me very happy. Digging through the fries they dump in the bag to get to burger also adds to the experience.

So I get there and my eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach. Unfortunately they don't have descriptions of the burgers so I order a regular cheeseburger with lettuce and onion, large fry and large drink.
Little did I know that the cheeseburger was a double with two patties. I never get these but whatever. Loved the burger, liked the fries a lot and washed it down with a root beer. Overall a delicious meal. Burger was cooked great and the cheese was nice and melty. The fries were great with the burger but when I had the fries by themselves I could kind of taste the peanut oil so I don't know if I'm a big fan of that.
I still think In-n-Out is better but I can only have those when I go to Cali and I will definitely be a return customer at Five Guys. Next time, the hot dog.

The further away from DC you get, the more ordinary the Five guys burgers are. I remember In n Out being more consistant, but it's probably been 20 years since I've been to one.
This must be the case since I've tried 5 Guys at three locations in NJ/NY and none of them was great. One was a little better than Wendy's, one was not quite as good and one was on par with McDonald's or Burger King.
Last time I was out west, In-n-Out was consistently great in L.A., middle of nowhere California, and Nevada.

We ate at Five Guys the other night.
1) they didn't tell us how big the large fries are, so Liz and I both ended up getting large fries which was a complete waste. One large fries would have been more than enough for both of us.
2) Burgers were good yet sloppy.
Total bill was 26 bucks.
Overall, the quality was good, but it was on par with Fuddruckers. No where near the quality or value of In and Out, or a local burger joint that's near us.
It's OK, but not OMG HAVE TO GO AGAIN quality. Probably would not go again.

Five Guys = Not frozen or processed beef
Five Guys = Not "fast food"
Five Guys = awesomeness
Fast food burgers to me is places with processed beef - McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys. Until last night I haven't been to one of those places once since mid October (one reason I lost 30 pounds, but not the point here) - I have gone into a Five Guys at least 4 or 5 times since them - last night, went to a Wendys because I was in a pinch and easily fell into bad habit, and woke up at 4am doubled over in pain. That almost killed me, and that was the place I use to think had the "good" burgers. Fuck'em - same goes to Fuddruckers, nasty tasting shit burger.
Tried Ray's Hell Burger the other week here in Arlington - a little too much hype, and a long ass wait, but it was a very good burger.

Get back in the corner. That's crazy talk. Wendy's gives you mushy, leftover toppings, the meat is practically curled into an overcooked crisp and the bread has usually been left out for too long. Just the patties alone are so drastically different...GAH. No way.
