At the risk of having people call me an elitist snob, I'd like to announce that I'm an elitist snob. Anyone else with me?
Example 1:
So, last night I got stuck going to a family birthday party for my 5 year-old niece. She likes pasta and she saw some Olive Garden commercials on t.v. so she asked to go there. Right away as we walk up to the place we see a throng of people standing outside - not a good sign. My wife goes in and they tell her it's an hour and forty-five minute wait!! And, I think that they were being over-optimistic and it would have wound up being over two hours.
Everyone's walking on eggshells trying not to upset my niece but I put my foot down and say there's no fucking way I'm waiting two hours to eat precooked food at the fucking Olive Garden - or words to that effect. So, we go down the road and eat at Outback. I know - it's still a chain but at least there was no wait and I got a nice bloody steak and at that point our dining options were slim and none.
It's always the same every time I pass an Olive Garden. What the fuck is wrong with people? I can understand if I was in Wyoming or North Dakota and people were jonesin' for Italian. But I was in North Jersey, literallly 5 minutes from NYC. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of the best Italian restaurants in the world (rivaling Italy itself) are at these people's disposal and they've got to line up at the fucking Olive Garden?
Example 2:
My wife and I were talking to some neighbor friends right after George Carlin died. It came up that he was scheduled to play The Borgata and I said how I wished that I'd had a chance to see him live before he died. This other couple tells us how they're going to Atlantic City and they had thought to get Carlin tickets but decided to go see Carlos Mencia instead "because he's sooooo funny." Yeeeech!

My favorite was when I went all out and cooked an authentic Italian Meal for my Co-workers in Montana..and one of them actually said: "This tastes NOTHING like at the Olive Garden, I can't eat this". Holy fuck, really? Maybe because it was REAL Italian Food! I knew then that I made a mistake moving there.
I also have a peeve about people not holding silverware right/arms on the table.

the only time i ever had Olive Garden in my life was the leftovers that my parents took home when they went there and the food was so awful they couldn't finish it so they took it home.
I don't mind chains but I prefer the Longhorn
It was my sister's birthday the other night so the entire family got together to go out to dinner. Her choice of restaurant? Some fucking faux-Italian chain in the mall.
I can't tell you how this galls me.
Like Smails said...here in northern NJ/NYC we have real, authentic Italian restaurants. Chefs who came from Italy and opened up a place to fulfill their life's passion and dream. And my sister wanted to drag everyone to a fucking mall, make us search for parking, walk across a lot on a winter night, and eat chain restaurant food?
I'm still livid.
Never again.
I support small business, not mall business.

I think it is perfectly fine to criticize people for having crap taste in food, comedy, music, t.v. It's their responsibility to not take it personally. Sometimes I like to watch stupid movies because I am in the mood. If I tell a friend that I am watching Dumb and Dumber for the 150th time, he has every right to flip me shit. He could say I should be watching a Sundance documentary or a Bergman film but if I am in the mood to watch fart jokes, I'm going with Jim Carey even though I know it's crap. If I get upset and call him a snob, I'm in the wrong. If someone likes the boring, faux Italian crap they serve at the Olive Garden when they are five minutes from NYC, they need to have a sense of humor about it.

Since I put this in the Confessional I have another confession: the Olive Garden we tried to eat at I actually worked at for about two months when I was in highschool so I'm very familiar with their modus operandi. Most everything there is precooked. I remember big plastic trays of canneloni coming off the truck and going into the storage freezer. The sauce all comes premade in big plastic jars. If that's what you want to eat then just get yourself a frozen dinner at the supermarket and eat it in the comfort of your own home.
There are thousands of restaurants in this area and without fail the two that ALWAYS have lines out the door that I see are Olive Garden and Red Lobster. I'm not sure but I think they're owned by the same company which would make sense because they are both the worst Italian and worst seafood you'll ever taste.
They don't have chefs working there - they have microwavers. Reminds me of the scene in National Lampoon's European Vacation where they go to the fancy French Restaurant and they serve them microwave swill because they figure the stupid Americans won't know the difference.

I can only assume that the Olive Garden's popularity stems from the insane prices listed in the commercials, especially in times like this. Isn't something like $6.95 for all the pasta you can eat and free soup and bread? I know a bunch of friends and I went to OG back in my original college days because of that reason and even back then that one time was enough to never go back again. Same thing with places like Fridays and Ruby Tuesdays and such: been once...never again.

Maybe I didn't make my point clear in my original post. I went for a lame elitist snob joke and for that I'm sorry. I don't know where in the "midwestjeff" you are, but as long as its not Chicago, and Olive Garden is all you've got, then more power to you. I guess its better than nothing.
I happen to like Chinese food from my local take-out place but I'm not going to pretend to believe that its authentic Chinese cuisine. I wish that I knew of a good Chinese restaurant that will let me order off of the non-white menu as was discussed in another thread.
My point is that I'm in the northeast. There are probably more people of Italian descent in this part of the country than in all of Italy and the quality of restaurants has already been discussed. There should not be a market for Olive Gardens anywhere from Boston down to Philadelphia.

No kidding. It's not like people here are really talking about going out of their way to go somewhere "cool"...it's people who are inundated with non-chains or local chains all around them. It's not a matter of finding someplace nobdy else knows about...these places are everywhere in big cities.

Ego.
My problem with these chains is not even the quality of the meals. Obviously the food is somewhat palatable or they would not be as successful as they are.
My objection is more of a philosophical one. I honestly believe small businesses are important to a community, and this country as a whole.
The guy who was the head chef at one of my favorite local restaurants is a great guy and an amazing cook. He moved here from Italy 10 years ago, and even though he was doing well as a chef, he decided to risk everything and open his own place 2 years ago.
At first he struggled terribly. He has a wife and 3 small children, a mortgage, and the reputation of the restaurant he bought wasn't very good. It took a long time for him to prove himself and win back customers that were lost by the previous owners.
This man pours his heart and soul into his restaurant. He's there 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, cooking authentic Italian cuisine.
Given the choice of going to his little restaurant or an Olive Garden, I'll skip the chain every fucking time. But that's just me. I'd also rather have a homemade burger on the grill over McDonald's any day of the week, especially if the homemade burger helped support the little guy and not some multi-billion dollar corporation.

alot of people are intimidated by NYC and authentic Italian...
I can't blame them for taking the easy way out... I live in Huntington Long Island... I can literally walk to 20 different non chain restaurants, but still have to fight w/ people to not take a 15 minute drive to Friday's/Applebees/Chilies..... its miserable, and alot of time I just give up...
the kicker... its no less expensive... its just less intimidating for people, and they are comfortable w/ what they know...

i live in southern NH, in a town right on the mass line so a lot of people come up here to do their shopping seeing as we in NH have no sales tax, as opposed to the 5% mass tax. because of this, and other reasons, it gets very "touristy" (for lack of a better term) and its fucking chain city. all piled on top of each other, chilis, unos, mcd's, burger king, wendy's... you name it. the overwheming presence of the chain resturants has KILLED almost all the small local establishments and it really sad. just liek yo say there are lines out the door at all these places while a decent place can barely survive. the only small places that do decent business are sub shops that deliver and breakfast joints, and even they have to battle with ihop, dennys, bickfords. its fucking ridiculous.

I get that. I go through periods of adhering to this and periods where I have to spend the least amount of money possible. Sorry mom and pop, but walmart has you beat. I'm sure there are but am not a food critic so I don't really loook for places like that. There is a BBQ place downtown that is not a chain and it kind of sucks. I like it there, but the meat is drier than a Don Rigo.
My comparison was on the low end of the restaurant spectrum, the fast food stuff.
I did that shit in high school and the beginning of college.
But, I also lied. The place I worked in high school kicked the shit out of any other fast food place in town.
So, yeah, fuck Olive Garden in it's fuckhole. I have just been turned around.

Local can be better, see my last post. I made a mistake in saying otherwise. And most likely, I would hit a local place over a chain. But I don't begrudge anyone for doing differently.
That guy with a puppet sucks ass? Why bring Stugots into this?
And they are not off limits. The too cool shit just wears on me. And I am cunty this morning. I almost got fucked and now I have to wait until later. So, my sexual frustration is coming out as a defense of the common man. Just leave the tards to their Mencia. We get it, David Cross is so fucking hip. Or whoever. Example 1: You do not look like a snob but instead you look like a selfish child. The girl is 5, it's her birthday and she was asked to pick the place out. You can't get in the way of that. One night of your life, two hours on a line... Sometimes you have to think outside of yourself. Two weeks removed from the situation and everyone who you would have complained to about how you had to wait would be sick of your story and it would fade from your mind. Just let the girl have her way on her birthday. Now the story your telling everyone is about how you triumphed over your niece... you don't look like a cool head here.
Example 2: Whatever, some people just don't have a taste for Carlin. You're not a snob in this case, you just have a different opinion. Mencia is shit, I agree.
I'm an east coaster but I'm not fancy I like Rolling Rock and Stoufers French Bread Pizza
I'm not fancy either. Trust me. I hate haughty taughty joints where people pull up in their 90K cars and eat meals that wouldn't fill up a 3 year old.
And there's nothing wrong with Rolling Rock or Stouffer's French Bread Pizza.
If you are going out, though, I'd rather see you support a sole proprietor than a conglomerate.

true about the first part, I wonder why they did not call in advance? You can call in a reservation... cause I don't think a 5 year old has the patience to wait for 2 hours yet.

I've lived a couple of blocks from an Applebee's for the last 12 years.
Never been inside of one yet...

This is what scares me most about moving down south. I'll be relocating to Knoxville Tennessee later this year and when I went to check it out this past summer all I saw where chains. EVERYWHERE.
I'm sure once I'm down there I'll find some good local places, but I was astounded at how many Applebee's, Chili's, Olive Gardens, etc. were there. It seemed like 3 of each in every town I went to.

Ever since then I have spent my time typing really shitty and useless long posts on Saturday mornings that are a bit of a window into my psyche. But who peeks in windows anymore?

i live in southern NH, in a town right on the mass line so a lot of people come up here to do their shopping seeing as we in NH have no sales tax, as opposed to the 5% mass tax. because of this, and other reasons, it gets very "touristy" (for lack of a better term) and its fucking chain city. all piled on top of each other, chilis, unos, mcd's, burger king, wendy's... you name it. the overwheming presence of the chain resturants has KILLED almost all the small local establishments and it really sad. just liek yo say there are lines out the door at all these places while a decent place can barely survive. the only small places that do decent business are sub shops that deliver and breakfast joints, and even they have to battle with ihop, dennys, bickfords. its fucking ridiculous.
You must live in Salem.
As an aside when it comes to breakfast foods I will only eat at local greasy spoons. I don't think there is one "chain" breakfast place that makes a decent breakfast and I don't fuck with breakfast

I hear you Judge. Two weeks ago I had ordered a bottle of 2004 Jean Claude Chatelain Sauvignon Blanc "Les Chailloux" Pouilly Fumé and the "sommelier" (or so he claimed) brought out a 2006! So naturally, once I tasted the difference I threw the contents of the glass at him, slapped in the face with my cashmere-lined gloves and had him fired on the spot.
I mean, don't you hate when that happens? It is so infuriatingly frustrating when the proletariat fail to understand that what I like is that to which they should be aspiring.

Part of your evidence that people have no culture or class is that a five year old wanted to go to Olive Garden?

Also one of the best breakfast sandwiches in Hoboken comes from a roach coach parked 1 block up from the path station. Its 3.25 for a ham egg and small tea. Half a block away from there is a deli where it is considered more up underdog's alley. An inferior sandwich with a small tea costs $6 and change. Stay classy San Diego.

I go to a locally owned deli 4 days out of my work week. The meat is cut as you order it. It's amazing.
It's a zillion times better than Subway or D'Angelos, and basically the same price.
But I guess that makes me elitist because I'd rather get a better meal for basically the same price at a locally owned place.

First off count chocula and fois gras got me laughing good.
Next, I'm all about the local joints. In most cases, if you know your local market, you can get fresh stuff 20x better and more cost effective than hitting a chain place. Agreed? What I'm saying is its seriously a form of bigotry in my mind, to elevate yourself even in your own mind, because they like chain restaurants and shitty comics over Lugar's and David fucking Cross. I don't know if it's been brought up but whatever. I grew up in an Italian household and therefore know how real Italian food tastes but i do go to Olive Garden once in a blue moon because i like their soup/salad thing. I know what to expect when i get there, one because it's Olive Garden and two because it's right down the street from a mall.
I get why you'd be annoyed at the caliber of the food being presented to eat for the night, i understand why you would find waiting in line for less than desirable food for potentially 2 hours bullshit.
I don't get, however, how you felt you had the right to upstage a 5 year olds birthday in order to bypass your own grievances with life and why you thusly ended up at the fucking OUTBACK of all place.

I'm going to respond to this post in order to explain myself (and its nothing against you but apparently a couple of people have questioned my need to "upstage" my niece). I guess sometimes I don't explain myself clearly enough - maybe because I try to go for a joke instead of getting into all of the boring little details of what actually happened.
Here goes - we went to Olive Garden for my niece. I hate it and my wife hates it but we did it for her. Everyone was hungry including my niece and my two kids. I'm a fucking adult and, if worse came to worse, I could have waited four hours if need be. But there was NO WAY the kids were going to make it two hours to eat. Everyone knew this but no one wanted to say it because they were afraid of upsetting my niece.
Meanwhile there we stood outside of Olive Garden while we could have been on our way somewhere else before THAT wait got longer. So, being a take-charge guy I said what everyone else was thinking. 5 year olds don't understand the difference between 2 minutes and 2 hours. I really wanted her birthday wish to work out for her but it was not going to happen. So we decided to go somewhere else. Believe me they were all going to decide that eventually I just nudged them along.
By then we were in the middle of the dinner rush and anywhere we went was going to be having an increasing wait. It so happened that Outback was just down the road. Anyone who has kids knows when they are reaching their breaking point and my kids were getting there. Two hours was out of the question.
Also, I just skimmed the thread and have seen what I have wrought and I'm regretting causing this clusterfuck. Sorry if I have offended anyone. If you enjoy Olive Garden or Red Lobster or Carlos Mencia or Larry the Cable Guy or whatever then enjoy it. There's a thread on here about how hack Billy Joel is. Guess what - I happen to like Billy Joel but I also understand why everyone thinks he's hack and to some extent agree. I even posted in that thread making fun of him. I guess Billy Joel is my Olive Garden but I realize it and don't call anyone an egotist who points out the obvious to me. You may like Olive Garden's food - that's personal taste but I don't see how you can't see my point that it has close to nothing to do with authentic Italian food.

You're just pissed because you have horrible taste.
A friend of mine admits she likes chain restaurants because it's familiar and she's scared of trying new things or restaurants she doesn't know. She said she can go into any AppleBee's and order what she likes and it'll taste the same no mater where she is. Understandable, but I don't agree. Chains are bland, boring and gross.
That's pretty much the only reason I'll eat at a Chili's, Craplebee's or Friday's when I'm here or somewhere else overseas. I'll try the local food IF it doesn't have ingredients I don't like.

We do eat at Cheeburger Cheeburger frequently though...
As far as the whole high/low culture thing, I could care less myself where other people eat or what they prefer. I tend to get viewed as being "negative" a lot by people because I don't really eat/like/listen to a lot of things that are "popular" am pretty blunt about it.
I just want to experience as many things as I can while I still am able to. I don't want to keep eating at chains all the time, because that's boring to me. How am I going to learn about anything if I just keep going to the same places and not trying new things or going to places ive never been?
