about 2 years ago we bought my oldest daughter a dumbo rat

<a href="http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z18/monkeypoot/?action=view&current=Velvet_small.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z18/monkeypoot/Velvet_small.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

he was a great, sweet pet up until about 3 months ago when he bit a friend of my daughters on the finger, nothing major just a nibble, almost like he was playing. then a few days later he straight up bit the piss out of my girl. she got scared of him so we took he out of her room and moved him to the "pet" room (laundry room) and i started feeding him and caring for him. then this month he bit me when i was handling him, more violently than he bit before, we have been trying to think of what to do with him, no rush since he's a caged animal and up high so he can't get any small hands......until today i put him in the cat carrier to clean his cage and put him on the counter, my 3 year old wanted to see him so i told her to stay back and not to put her hands near the bag or he may bit. so of course when i leave the room she unzips it and sticks her hand in, and he latched on bitting and scratching. he got her real good on her right hand. i feel like fuckin' parent of the year for letting her near him. he has to go, but i 'm not sure if i should kill him humanely or maybe let him go in the woods? a lady my wife knows says the as this kind of rat gets older they can develop tumors on the brain that can make them mean, so i don't know if this is whats up or if he's just a mean shit. as much as i want to bash his little brain in, i'm not the killin' type, plus like i said he was a really sweet pet at one time.....
ideas, comments.........::wallbash:

If you release it into the woods, what are the chances it won't come back to your house with it's family?

What are 2 years in rat years? If the rat is old, and you kill it, it's a mercy killing. Or do what they do with horses when they're no longer useful and take it out in the back and hit it with a shovel or feed it rat poison.

Do Not Turn Him Loose. I don't care if it is a rat, you have a responsability as a pet owner dispatch of it in a humane way. If you don't want to put it in an enclosed container with a healthy amount of either (starting fluid for an auto store), have a vet. euthanize it.

Death is the best way to go for this animal. Get a python to feed it to, then you have the replacement pet for the kids. Little girls love reptiles.

HAAAAAAAAA!

as for the mouse, i know know, it was once a great pet. As a pet owner myself, i understand the attachment. But if my labrador (who i gaurantee is a better all around pet than any mouse) ever bit a child unprovoked, i'd go old yeller on his ass.

As for the mouse, i'd flush the fucker.

I'm with those saying put it down humanely or give it to somebody with a snake. I would lean toward the snake for the whole "circle of life" thing, but that is just me.

If you take it to a vet it is going to cost big bucks to have it put down. Doing it yourself I was thinking carbon dioxide from dry ice in an enclosed space, but the ether idea is probably better and more reliable.

once a pet like a rat tastes blood it's going to continue to bite people.

I'm not sure feeding it to a pet snake is a good idea, the rat may very well bite or scratch the snake before the snake gets him.

the most humane thing to do is bring it to a vet to have it put down.

How are your daughters taking it?

Or did you just say he moved to a big farm or something like that?

I had a sweet dumbo rat that lived to be four, and the vet said it was the oldest she had ever seen. Eventually, she had a billion tragic health problems. Euthanizing a rat is sad, but only $40 and 30 minutes. Of course the less you handle the rat the more likely it is to bite you, but if it's already gotten so bad...

I have used starting fluid before because it is ether and will knock them out quick and without pain until they stop breathing. A friend of mine had brought his pet rat to me for the same reason, it attacked his sister and they know that I was humane in my method.

Rat poison makes them slowly bleed to death, antifreeze makes them go mad and into violent seizures, And a couple cotton balls dabbed in rubbing alcohol put into a Tupperware container with the animal is not always nice to watch.

the oldest isn't to broken up, she gets why it had to be done. and the 3 year old hasn't
noticed he's gone.

If you opt to kill it, you can put the whole cage in a big black plastic garbage bag and duct tape the bag around your exhaust pipe and then start the car. The bag will fill with co2 and the rat will drift off to rat heaven feeling no pain. You will probably feel bad, but keep thinking of how his illness betrayed your daughter's trust and faith. She probably felt bad for him for being all along, way up high on that shelf with no one to cuddle him, and look what he did? He needs to go, he serves no function. Letting it go in the woods will mean a starvation death for him, or some own will eat him within a day.

also to make it up to the universe for killing one of its creatures, we are donating the cage and supplies that we have to my dauhgters school. that about balances it out.....right?.?.?

You did the right thing for the rat, and now you are doing better with the donation. Good + good = good heart.
