...lately since they no longer have 'ol W. to kick around.

And oh how easy that was. I do miss it.

Anyway, last night's episode was nothing short of brilliant calling out MSNBC and their hack financial reporting. Here are some bad quality you-tube video... but you can get the point. Watch them before Viacom yanks them!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N4gtTgmbMo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBOkRF1izHI

And I just saw cross the wire that the press has picked it up....

NEW YORK (AP) - If you make a date to be on a late-night talk show, it's best not to back out. John McCain learned that lesson the hard way with David Letterman last fall, and CNBC reporter Rick Santelli just took it on the chin from Jon Stewart. Santelli and his network wouldn't comment Thursday on Stewart's brutal takedown during Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" on Wednesday.

Santelli became an instant online star when millions of people watched copies of his CNBC criticism that President Barack Obama's housing plan was "promoting bad behavior" by rewarding people who might otherwise be foreclosed. He was booked to appear on Stewart's show Wednesday.

But he backed out Friday, with CNBC spokesman Brian Steel saying that "we all made a decision it was just time to move on to the next story."

Said Stewart: "I guess the phrase would be bailed out."

During a report at the Chicago Board of Trade on Feb. 19, Santelli turned to those around him: "This is America. How many of you people want to pay for your neighbor's mortgage that has an extra bathroom and can't pay their bills?"

When the traders began booing, Santelli said, "President Obama, are you listening?"

"How many people would have liked to see Rick Santelli on this program," Stewart echoed on "The Daily Show," his audience responding with a cheer. "Are you listening? Are you listening, Rick Santelli?

"I have to say I find cheap populism oddly arousing," Stewart said.

Stewart then turned to CNBC itself, airing a selection of clips from personalities like Jim Cramer giving opinions and predictions about the economy that in retrospect looked spectacularly ill-informed.

"If I had only followed CNBC's advice, I'd have a million dollars today," Stewart said, "provided I'd started with $100 million."

CNBC's Steel said neither the network's executives nor Santelli would comment on Stewart's broadcast.

Santelli and CNBC initially sought more attention for his self-described "rant," and some saw him as a hero. After Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs fought back, Santelli said he felt threatened.

NBC colleague Matt Lauer, speaking to Santelli on the "Today" show on Feb. 26, was skeptical. "He wasn't threatening you," Lauer said.

The next day, CNBC and Santelli decided it was time to move on.

Time to move on?

Hacks. All of them. NONE of them care about your financial status, only theirs.

And Stewart has been on target recently with similar call-outs on O'Reilly, Rush, and my personal favorite, that RNC convention where Rush blabbed whatever. There they showed GOPer after GOPer throwing Bush under the bus. Then he shows the clip of the same convention last year when Bush actually showed up. "Four more years! Four more years!" they're chanting.

The Daily Show's research team deserve all the credit in the world for focusing on this hypocrisy. It's more than entertainment and a funny show. It's enlightening.

I have looked for the show on Hulu, etc without luck. Rec suggested watching it on the Comedy Central site so I may have to try that. A few months ago I was at my buddy's house and saw a Palin bit he did and totally agreed despite my buddy and his wife not being to happy with my descent.

In retrospect, I'd say this show jumped the shark when Jon was crying about the WTC in September 2001.

It was emphasized later when he took personally remarks by Palin how big cities werent "real America".

I've tuned in recently, and he, apparently afraid to make a joke about Obama, is still making Dick Cheney jokes.

I used to record the whole hour; daily show, then colbert.
Now I only record colbert. Perhaps since he's a 'character' I forgive him easier, but I still find him funny.

Jon Stewart has been continuing his brilliant SMASHING of Cramer and CNBC.

Cramer gets NBC Networks to stick up for him, but his trial is over just when you see the clip of him on the Scarborough show. The shifting eyes, the uncomfortable posture and the fact that the only person he can get to stick up for him is douchebag Joe. Listen to Dora talking to Jon. Like I said in the poll thread, I though was one of Stewart's top 5 moments on TDS. I think the real weapon of the show is that even though they're doing the whole thing for laughs, the show is clearly put together by people who know their shit. The whole thing started out as like 90% joke, 10% serious, but then Cramer and the NBC networks had to blow it up and this is what happens. Cramer and co. got what they deserved.

It's a lot to summarize. A week in the making, with a few clips already in this thread. However, last night's show can be seen on the front page of http://www.thedailyshow.com/

Stewart called out MSNBC on bad financial reporting. He used specific show examples, one of them being Cramer. Cramer fired back. Stewart went back to the tape to see he was right. Cramer went on NBC shows defending himself. Stewart went back to the tapes again. Cramer went on last night and crumbled. Stewart smashed him.

Oh ok. Stewart showed clips of Cramer talking how he could inflate a stock situation for a companies profit, when there was no real benefit to regular people buying the stocks, but plenty of benefit to the companies. He basically showed Cramer using his knowledge of how the market works for his and Wall Street's advantage, and not the average person. He even showed examples of Cramer saying what should be done, and then Cramer saying he would never say that on TV.

He called Cramer out for fucking around with people's money like it was some kind of game. Cramer had no defense and apologized and admitted he was wrong, and pretty much ruined any credibility he had. It was tough to watch. An ugly truth.

He called Cramer out for fucking around with people's money like it was some kind of game. Cramer had no defense and apologized and admitted he was wrong, and pretty much ruined any credibility he had. It was tough to watch. An ugly truth.

Thanks.

Yeah, this really wasn't a fight or an argument. Cramer looks like he feels really guilty for what happened. Maybe he's seeing a lot of people lose money and he's realizing his "news" network is partially responsible.

Even his appearance made me feel bad for him, it's like he didn't even have a chance.

Stewart smashed him.

not to be a picky Pete but it was CNBC he called out....

Stewart gave him a beat down. I think Crammer thought Stewart would lob softballs at him because he was good enough to show up. Stewart handed him his ass, and in the process, drew attention to a lot of issues not known by many people outside of the financial industry. Great job by Jon Stewart, how ironic is it a mock news show is more informative then many of the actual "news" channels.

Ahhh, you are correct my friend! Thank you.

And here is some more detail from an AP article:

Once Cramer came out for the interview, Stewart wondered: "How the hell did we get here?"

Cramer, his sleeves characteristically rolled up, said he was a "fan of the show."

But the humorous tone - at least for Stewart - changed as the interview continued.

Stewart repeatedly said Cramer wasn't his target, but aired clip after clip of the CNBC pundit.

"Roll 210!" announced Stewart, like a prosecutor. "Roll 212!"

Most were from a 2006 interview not meant for TV in which Cramer spoke openly about the duplicity of the market.

"I can't reconcile the brilliance and knowledge that you have of the intricacies of the market with the crazy ... I see you do every night," said the comedian.

Stewart said he and Cramer are both snake-oil salesman, only "The Daily Show" is labeled as such. He claimed CNBC shirked its journalistic duty by believing corporate lies, rather than being an investigative "powerful tool of illumination." And he alleged CNBC was ultimately in bed with the businesses it covered - that regular people's stocks and 401Ks were "capitalizing your adventure."

For his part, Cramer disagreed with Stewart on a few points, but mostly acknowledged that he could have done a better job foreseeing the economic collapse: "We all should have seen it more."

Cramer said CNBC was "fair game" to the criticism and acknowledged the network was perhaps overeager to believe the information it was fed from corporations.

"I, too, like you, want to have a successful show," said Cramer, defending his methods on "Mad Money." He later added: "Should we have been constantly pointing out the mistakes that were made? Absolutely. I truly wish we had done more."

Cramer insisted he was devoted to revealing corporate "shenanigans," to which Stewart retorted: "It's easy to get on this after the fact."

At one point, Cramer sounded the reformed sinner, responding to Stewart's plea for more levelheaded, honest commentary: "How about I try that?" said Cramer. "I'll do that."

By the end, the two-segment interview went far beyond its allotted time. Comedy Central said the on-air version would be cut by about eight minutes, though the entire interview would be available unedited on ComedyCentral.com on Friday.

Comedy Central has a national story fall into their lap and makes the decision not to run over eight minutes. Let me guess that would throw off the 2 am censored, with commercial version of half baked.

It was entertaining, and it was informative, and Jim had to know that Jon justed needed to vent, and did not mean to vent towards him, but, man, he's just really pissed at CNBC only wanting to report on the booms, and now that we're out of the boom, when we will get to the next one, instead of maybe questioning why we were in such a period of rapid wealth expansion.

He's more pissed at people like Rick Santelli, who have the balls to blame this crisis on people who applied for ridiculous mortgages. It's honestly the fault of the people who approved those retarded mortgages, and the only reason they approved them was because they were greedy, and they knew they could get the shit mortgages packaged up and sold as securities up and up the ladder, and basically turn shit into gold by simply choosing not to look at the credit histories of the mortgage receivers. And these dickhead "conservatives" have the balls to blame poor people who thought they were getting a break for once but were just getting fooled by liars, these "conservatives" would just as soon shift the blame to minorities and poor people rather than do the real homework and find out it's the liars and cheaters in the financial and real estate markets just manipulating it all to grab as much free money they can, grab it while Alan Greenspan keeps the Fed rates low and while Bush announces that America should have a goal of making everyone a home owner.

Apparently Jim Cramer didn't like the interview: (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/13/AR2009031303745.html?hpid=topnews)

Cramer has told colleagues he felt blindsided by Stewart’s hostile approach. But many CNBC staffers were furious with Cramer yesterday for failing to defend the network’s reporting or to criticize Stewart’s video clips as selectively edited or out of context. CNBC declined all interview requests, saying in a statement: “CNBC produces more than 150 hours of live television a week that includes more than 850 interviews in the service of exposing all sides of every critical financial and economic issue. We are proud of our record.”

Wait...so Cramer's people are playing the fucking pity card? Gimme a fucking break.

Hey TheJays, isnt there a tree somewhere that needs a hug? How is it the banks' fault for giving these loans to people too stupid/greedy to understand what it meant when they signed the dotted line? By greedy I mean getting a mortgage for a house they should have known they could not afford. Doesn't signing a contract mean anything anymore? Just because they were "approved for the retarded mortgage" does not mean they had to sign for it. According to you, people should only be responsible for what they sign up for until times get tough, then it is the fault of the person/bank they signed the contract with. Companies are offering deals that seem too good to be true every day, but it doesn't mean we have to buy into them. I'm sick of businesses being blamed for the stupidity of the consumer.

Furthermore, it was Clinton's crew that forced banks to loosen up mortgage stipulations in order to boost home ownership. I'm not a big Bush fan either, but lets not blame him for problems that originated more than 10 years ago.

Yeah because its still the stock market and there will always be risk involved. Your 401k isn't anymore guaranteed than if you daytraded penny stocks. Put your money in your mattress if you are so worried about it. It will rebound just like it always does.

I agree, many older people that are near or in retirement are in the worst shape in this situation because they may not live long enough for the market to rebound. But the reason they were in a position to have a comfortable retirement in the first place (before the market shit the bed) is because they had been investing long term for say 30 years.

What is the alternative? To keep your money in a savings account or bonds that are safer but have minute returns? In that case, she would not have had anywhere near the amount of money she started with before she lost a good portion of it. Therefore I contend that she is in a better position even with her loses that she would be had she simply put her money in bonds or the like.

It's the bank's fault because they should have known that the customer had a shitty credit rating/no credit history, therefore knowing better that the 0 down/0% mortgage they just had the customer sign might very well become a default/foreclosure proceeding. The banks were re-assuring the customers that even if they couldn't make the payments anymore, they could just extract some equity from their home in a year or two, when the value of their property was sure to have risen. And it's Wall Street's fault because the bank was selling brokers these shit mortgages, getting them packaged all together, so that Wall Street could sell them as top rated mortaged-backed securities.

I'm not saying its the bank's fault only when times get tough, I'm saying it's the bank's fault the whole way through. It's the bank's fault because they misled the people with shitty credit/zero credit. They actively sought people with bad credit. Remember Countrywide and their annoying commercials?

You cannot always blame the customer for taking advantage of a deal they think is good. If I go to the supermarket, and I buy a 12 pack of Coke because I see it on sale for 5 cents a pack, it's not my fault that the supermarket goes into the red on Coke sales because of their inappropriate sales prices... I was just looking for a good deal.

And yes, I know that these problems originated in the 1990's with Henry Cisneros (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/19/business/19cisneros.html), but they certainly were not helped with President Bush . (http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/housing/2004-01-20-fha_x.htm)

In a bid to boost minority homeownership, President Bush will ask Congress for authority to eliminate the down-payment requirement for Federal Housing Administration loans.

No one seemed to be bitching about Bush handing out money to minorities for their own new houses back in 2004. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4568925/)

One of the approaches, the American Dream Down Payment Act, will help low-income Americans afford the down payment and closing costs on their first home. Bush is asking Congress to provide $200 million a year for the program. He also proposes to make zero down-payment loans available to first-time buyers whose mortgages are guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration.

In addition, Bush is proposing a tax credit to encourage builders to provide 200,000 affordable homes over five years for low-income families.

These and other steps, he said, will push the nation toward his goal of adding 5.5 million new minority home owners by the end of the decade.

And you are right, I do feel bad for blaming Bush for this mess, I mean after all, back in 2002, (http://www.hud.gov/news/speeches/presremarks.cfm) he was protecting us from terrorism, and one of the things those damn terrorists hate about us is that we can get our own homes, so, let's show those terrorists how much the USA rules by really rubbing it in their faces and let's get everyone a house of their own!

The third problem is the fact that the rules are too complex. People get discouraged by the fine print on the contracts. They take a look and say, well, I'm not so sure I want to sign this. There's too many words. There's too many pitfalls. So one of the things that the Secretary is going to do is he's going to simplify the closing documents and all the documents that have to deal with homeownership.

It is essential that we make it easier for people to buy a home, not harder. And in order to do so, we've got to educate folks. Some of us take homeownership for granted, but there are people -- obviously, the home purchase is a significant, significant decision by our fellow Americans. We've got people who have newly arrived to our country, don't know the customs. We've got people in certain neighborhoods that just aren't really sure what it means to buy a home. And it seems like to us that it makes sense to have a outreach program, an education program that explains the whys and wherefores of buying a house, to make it easier for people to not only understand the legal implications and ramifications, but to make it easier to understand how to get a good loan.

And so, therefore, I've called -- yesterday, I called upon the private sector to help us and help the home buyers. We need more capital in the private markets for first-time, low-income buyers. And I'm proud to report that Fannie Mae has heard the call and, as I understand, it's about $440 billion over a period of time. They've used their influence to create that much capital available for the type of home buyer we're talking about here. It's in their charter; it now needs to be implemented. Freddie Mac is interested in helping. I appreciate both of those agencies providing the underpinnings of good capital.

Bush was awesome.

The same thing happened to Conan O'Brien while he was still on Late Night. NBC had to register hornymanatee.com

Take the "horny manatee" phenomenon, for example. It seems that the Late Night Show was doing a skit on December 4 -- involving bizarre sports-team mascots -- in which a guy at a computer watched someone in a manatee costume dancing to a suggestive song called I Touch Myself. At the end of the skit, host Conan O'Brien made a crack about the guy going to a website called www.hornymanatee.com (http://www.hornymanatee.com/).

According to a recent story (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/12/arts/television/12mana.html?em&ex=1166158800&en=226627e969708f1a&ei=5087) in the New York Times, this set off alarm bells at NBC. Why? Because staffers for the show -- and the NBC lawyers whose job it is to think of such things -- started to think about what would happen if someone set up a porn website at hornymanatee.com (an address that Conan O'Brien apparently made up on the spot). Would NBC be liable because it gave out the URL on the air?

So the quick-thinking network types registered the domain themselves and the show created a gag website about risque manatees. In less than a week, the site had received more than 3 million visitors. That in turn set off a wave of contributions from viewers, who have been sending in stories about manatees and even poetry (which has been read on the air by the Late Night host). "We couldn’t have done this two years ago," Mr. O’Brien said. “It’s sort of this weird comedy dialogue with the audience."

No, I don't. We've all seen enough to see he's nuts.

It sounds like you've bought into his persona. But, it doesn’t matter. The name of the game is ratings, pure and simple. The more exposure Becks gets, “good” and “bad”, the more likely it is that his ratings will go up. Some people seem to actually think that if they just keep “exposing” him then people will somehow come around and start leaving in droves. Beck eats this up.

And you’ve now used another generalization to defend the use of the first generalization, to add to your other generalization that his “audience is dumb”. Add to this that you say that you use others to frame your opinion of a show that you do not watch. It’s just not...credible.

How on Earth can anyone defend Beck?

No, I haven't. Anyone with an 8th grade education should be able to tell that his nonsense is just fear-mongering schlock. However, I will revise any "audience is dumb" statement - it's anyone who watches and believes what he says is true, is dumb. Actually, beyond dumb. It's borderline retarded.

This has to be the case. Cable news (led by Fox News) has basically destroyed credible journalism in this country. This story should actually be a huge scandle, but it's just overlooked by the rest of the media.

They were either told by someone to not mention his name. In which case, they should have decided to just not do the story. Which would go against every Fox news lover who thinks it is impossible for corporate to direct the slant of the news.

Or, the talking heads are self-censoring. Which has been my position. They know what slant corporate wants without being told.

I don't know which is more mind boggling- that fox is able to continuously do this and get away with it (even if they admit their mistake, they say it once quietly and the rubes still go on believing the impression it was meant to create) or that the left/democratic party/white house doesn't have a more aggressive way to counteract this shit.

Amazing that every Fox show ran with it. Except GB whose "I don't know" take seems to be his whole gimmick. "Are there FEMA camps? I don't know."
I have to assume that Fox knew the number was wrong, but they can claim they were relying on a source. Sure, the source was an anonymous Indian official who didn't say $200 million a day, but it was close enough.

Though the ACORN controversy seemed to be completely manufactured, they still report negatively about ACORN. In 6 months, the punch line will still be that his India trip cost so much money. Fox aggressively reports something false, then quietly mentions when it's been debunked. It's actually pretty brilliant.

Did a foreign official tell you Obamacare won't work? Is lower costs all that matters? Wasn't the Iraq war supposed to pay for itself right away? Politicians have to lie because the public wants immediate returns. As everyone knows, the best way to plan your future is focus on the short term.

I never thought Obama was going to be a savior. Had Bush not been such a horrible president, and McCain didn't allow Palin to be VP, I might have been more comfortable with him.
Anyway, I am disappointed with Obama and all democrats because they half-ass everything, buckling to Republicans and public opinion. You are in office, ignore public opinion, we trusted you with our future, make decisions and stick with them.
Socialized medicine is the future. Fight and delay it all you want.

This really nails it. Obama should have STARTED with socialized medicine for his health care bill. He completely buckled to the republicans and moved to the middle.

I don't think stewart is very good at interviews, and last night did nothing to change my mind. He spends the whole time acting like he's trying to come up with some brilliant question, rather than just asking a question. For Rumsfeld, he should of had specific questions, with specific quotes or clips to back up his claims. They were discussing their different perceptions of how the administration portrayed/sold/ (lied) about the need for a war in Iraq- come on, show some clips, use some clips.

That would have been awesome, but Rumsfeld was there to plug his book and Stewart, who still considers himself a comedian rather than a political journalist, took it that way. He tried to get Rumsfeld to admit the war was a mistake, but he wouldn't fall for that, and Jon knows that.. so yea, not the best interview at all.

Maybe if Rumsfeld went on O'Reilly and was asked "Was it a mistake?", we might enjoy a squirmy admission of guilt, but that won't happen either.

Damn, that would have been PERFECT for using past clips.

I agree. But no matter what, once Rumsfeld starting lying, you can't let him get away with it. I couldn't believe that Rumsfeld tried to say that he never said he sold the American public on the idea that they were sure of WMD. That is 100% false.

"We know where they are. They are in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad."
- Donald Rumsfeld, March 30, 2003

"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction."
- Dick Cheney, August 26, 2002

"We know for a fact that there are weapons there."
- Ari Fleischer, January 9, 2003

"Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."
- George Bush, March 18, 2003

It doesn't have to be in a combative manner. Rumsfeld says he "thinks" he never presented that they were certain about WMD, and then Stewart asks how the public should take his statement, "We know where they are. They are in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad.". That's all.

I think Marc Thiessen, Jim Kramer, et Al. Might disagree about Stewart's abilities at evisceration. It's too bad he's tempering his wit presumably to walk his civil discussion talk. Rumsfeld is one of a handful that you should break the rule for.

I was a big Jon Stewart fan, until he took his indignant position on cable news outlets and their bias reporting. When pressed on his partisan interview with John Kerry and the softball questions he layed on the democratic nominee, Stewart, who openly admitted to supporting Kerry against Bush, claimed the "I come on right after South Park" defense, as he usually did when pressed on his false reporting.

Stewart never wanted to fully enter the realm of political talk, so he voiced his opinions, then ran when a retort he could not handle came his way. He understands that he is a legitimate news outlet for young Americans, not just a satirical production.

I've always thought the Daily Show should never be in re-runs. Get a guest host in while Stewart is on vacation. Comedy based on politics and/or current events has a very short shelf life.

That would be harder to pull off with the Colbert Report, but that should probably have guest hosts too.

and I'll admit, I was HIGHLY doubtful Stewart could take this show over, much less revamp it in a major/very effective way. he's been the best possible fit and pretty much the show IS him, not those who came before him. Not an easy thing to pull off, but the man is passionate, bright and something I didn't see too much of earlier in his career, funny too.

this is one of those times I was completely no on board with the selection but it ended up being brilliant. I never even knew he was so intertwined/interested in the political world to be honest, much less it could be made so comical in the face of some division out there.

in short, he's done some amazing things for and with this medium. nice work...at least one Jon has skills.

The intent of voter ID laws is to prevent blacks from voting. It targets low income voters who don't have the time nor the money to secure a photo ID.

Indiana and Pennsylvania went to court over the issue and both were unable to present any evidence of voter fraud, nor were they able to present any evidence or argument that voter ID laws would prevent any sort of voter fraud. Read the Applewhite/Pennsylvania stipulation if you don't believe it:

http://www.pilcop.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Exhibit-3-Applewhite-Stipulation-copy.pdf

They *literally* weren't willing to go to bat for their own law because they knew it was bullshit. Thanks to some quality doublespeak, they get idiots like you to lap that shit up like there is some sort of equivalency between ~*some stupid example*~ and something that has been enshrined, several times now, as an unencumbered right -- the right to speech, the right to vote.

this is absolute and total supposition. And there are far more whites, especially in the south , who are considered "low income" , are they just collateral damage in the war to stop black folks from voting?
In SC a photo ID thru the DMV costs 5 bucks for ages 5-16, after that it is FREE, racist bastards are giving them away, the shame.

BZZT wrong, it hurts plenty of whites but the intent of the law is to limit Democratic-leaning voters, especially blacks.

They're not "giving them away" as they still require photographs. What kind of fucked up world do you live in where "Hi, I'm your mailman. Time to take a picture!" is a normal thing?

Unless there is a national ID, you can't get that. Plus, not for nothing, if it was about making votes count there wouldn't be so many states with electronic voting machines with code that is kept private and no paper trail of votes. But, hey, it isn't about accuracy, it's about keeping people from being enfranchised.

well it must be true if the ACLU said it, right? Don't I feel silly.
No "mailmen" show up to take a picture, people just show up at the DMV and get a proper picture ID, you have a problem with that?
You, Syd, are the biggest bigott I've seen in a long time. You paint the entire south with the same brush. What if somebody says that 12% of the population is responsible for 50% of violent crime, how does that make you feel? I'm guessing that you rightly argue that there's more to it than just the numbers, right? But the entire south is racist, right?
You are a fucking hypocrite bigott.
FREE fucking ID's are available, to everybody here, it defeats your entire bullshit, crybaby argument. And the idea that requiring an ID before voting is racist, what horseshit. There are far more poor white people in this country than African American, there is no argument. Just stop it, you race baiting fuck. What you are arguing is just stupid.
Poor people, regardless of race, do whatever paperwork is necessary to get public assistance, but it's racist to prove they are who they claim to be before we let them vote? Shut up. There are far more poor white people in this country than black, that is a fact, it may not fit your hand ringing bullshit, but it's a fact.

Syd
10-26-2013, 03:02 AM
well it must be true if the ACLU said it, right?

Well, Pennsylvania and Indiana didn't try to tell the ACLU that they were wrong. Both court cases fell apart because it was somewhat apparent the ACLU (and others) were telling the truth, that voter fraud is a non-issue and there is apparently another reason why these laws exist.

No "mailmen" show up to take a picture, people just show up at the DMV and get a proper picture ID, you have a problem with that?

Yes, that encumbers the right to free speech.

You, Syd, are the biggest bigott I've seen in a long time. You paint the entire south with the same brush.

Apathy is complicity.

What if somebody says that 12% of the population is responsible for 50% of violent crime, how does that make you feel?

That the war on drugs is a failure and that having an economic system that encourages racing to the bottom is also a failure?

I'm guessing that you rightly argue that there's more to it than just the numbers, right? But the entire south is racist, right? You are a fucking hypocrite bigott.

Well, yes. Black people aren't genetically pre-disposed to crime. Eugenicists like you were disproven by the scientific community back in the 30s and 40s.

FREE fucking ID's are available, to everybody here, it defeats your entire bullshit, crybaby argument. And the idea that requiring an ID before voting is racist, what horseshit.

They're not free, they cost time. Most of what being poor about is lack of free time. Denying them a right to vote because they need to work 60+ hours a week in order to eek out a scarce living is wrong.

There are far more poor white people in this country than African American, there is no argument. Just stop it, you race baiting fuck.

And there are more blacks without photo IDs than whites. Why do you think this law was enacted? To prevent traditional Democratic voters from being able to vote. It also conveniently targets university/college students as well.

A) Not everyone is on public assistance. SNAP, CHIP, WIC and TANF aren't utilized by everyone that has the programs available to them.

B) The right to speech has always been considered unencumbered. You shouldn't need money to speak or be enfranchised. I don't know why you have such a hard-on for limiting democracy, but I appreciate that you're so steadfast in your support for government moving away from a democracy. Authoritarian Republican voters generally don't have the cognitive dissonance to fight this hard for centralized, insular government.

Well, because it is racism. American politics are rooted in racism. The Antebellum South was built on slave labor, calling human beings farm equipment (except when they wanted additional representation, in which case farm equipment suddenly counted as 60% of a human being)

Hopefully once whites are a minority the government makes you show ID to vote and if your ancestors have more than one drop of white blood they're second class citizens

Also, you're the racist to be dropping the "black people are genetically predisposed to crime"

but eh, because you don't say nigger you're not a racist in your mind, right?

Not the intended effect, just what race baiting fucks like you say was the intended effect.
And you better go back and reread, I never said any such thing.
And because you think the bar should be lowered, you are the racist, we are all equal. I trust our black citizens can get an ID, you seem to think they can't. You can't call a law that applies to everyone racist.

Were Jim Crow laws racist?

of course, that has nothing to do with what we are discussing, probably just another plan on your part to put more words in my mouth.
I say again, there are more poor whites than poor blacks, the hardship is the same. It is you who doesn't believe the poor black person can acclimate to society as well as the poor white, so you want to cry racism as an excuse to lower the bar. But it's not racism, it applies to everyone the exact same. You apply motives to people and states to justify your constant cry, you find race under every rock, you are a predictable bore. And now you're trying to paint me with your broad brush because I disagree with you, therefore I must be a racist. Fuck off

Well, it does. Jim Crow laws weren't written to say "black people can't vote" they were written in a way to prevent as many black people from voting.

No, just to point out you're parroting the same bullshit that ALEC provided to lawmakers to market to voters.

I say again, there are more poor whites than poor blacks, the hardship is the same.

Then Jim Crow laws can't be racist. Anyway, even if they were "the same" you're forgetting that laws are very selectively enforced. Let us take a look at the crown jewel of selective enforcement, the stop-and-frisks by the NYCPD:

http://www.nyclu.org/content/stop-and-frisk-data

Funny how those numbers break down, isn't it?

Want to hear it directly from a cop?

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/414/right-to-remain-silent?act=2#play

Don't worry if you don't believe what he said, there are recordings of it.

It is you who doesn't believe the poor black person can acclimate to society as well as the poor white, so you want to cry racism as an excuse to lower the bar.

No, I'm just saying that blacks are disproportionately impacted by it because the statistics say that blacks are less likely than whites to have photo ID that is accepted by voter ID laws.

But it's not racism, it applies to everyone the exact same. You apply motives to people and states to justify your constant cry, you find race under every rock, you are a predictable bore. Jim Crow laws applied to everyone the exact same. Yet, you say they're racist. At least be consistent and understand that calling someone a nigger or white trash isn't the threshold of racism.

Not that you have any interest in changing your opinion, but here is someone a little bit more eloquent than me explaining why parroting the Republican party plank of "but THEY'RE the racist ones!" is silly:

http://www.timwise.org/2012/08/of-republican-race-cards-and-white-denial/

and to answer your questions why poor whites and poor blacks aren't all that comparable if you scroll down a bit to "unearned advantage"

I'm done arguing with you Syd, at least for now, you are as unrepentant with your bullsit as I am with mine. But I want you to know one thing, I'm not parroting anyone, I avoid reading or watching politics like I do bee stings. I'm just applying a little common sense to your horseshit race baiting, period. You are very adept at finding scribblings that support your stance, but most of them are just as warped as you are to begin with, hardly unbiased.
I told you, I'm OK either way, but for you to pretend that it's harder for a poor black person to get ID than a poor white person is just plain stupid. If they are just stubborn, and refuse to do it, I have no pity. I actually believe this is such a tiny percentage of the population, those without a picture ID, that it is ridiculous that we have wasted so many words on it. Get a fucking ID if your state requires it, it's neither hard nor expensive.
Go ahead Syd, fester in your race hate, I know my own heart, and how I treat all people. And continue to hate the south based on it's past, and ignore the sins of the north, but keep in mind, the south is now full of yankees who retired here, I go weeks without running into anybody with a southern accent. But fester away Syd, burn with your bigotry and hate.

so basically you concede that voter ID laws are to prevent blacks from voting in the antebellum south, and elsewhere to prevent hispanics from voting and there are plenty of caveats in the laws to prevent college students from voting because republican politics are so disconnected from reality that the only way they can remain relevant is straight up disregard for democracy

you haven't once shown why there is any need for voter ID laws other than false equivalencies

and you said jim crow laws were racist because ALEC never put out any marketing material to tell people otherwise; they only put out marketing material to tell people that these current voter ID laws aren't racist (even though they're little different from jim crow laws hence why the VRA shut them down)

basically you're reading a script from the people who wrote the law so I am putting words into your mouth the same way they are

it's like a big omelette that has stuff sticking out of the sides because they didn't use enough eggs and now all the ingredients are visible

I have no real opinion about this anyway, I just tire of your constant race ranting bullshit. If a state wants people to show ID, I really don't think it's that much of a hardship, get a fucking ID. If they don't require it, I'm fine with that too. But you crying racism about every fucking subject? Tiresome and ridiculous.

DelV, there is PLENTY of racism that unfortunately does still exist, and in this case, one of the key motivating factors tied simply to voting norms. That's bullshit and the case in PA is a NORTHERN case, as is Indiana. You seem to be VERY sensitive to racial issues and I'm not sure where it comes from outside of where you hail from. No one place is completely racist, mu h less even the worst spots continue to get better and better. Yet along he way those in power and slowly losing their grip do anything to keep it and their true character shines through. Here in many states the reason behind voter id is not simply to protect the vote from fraud, but rather from the poor and traditionally dem vote. It may not always be simple racism, but surely a bullshit way to stop voters who aren't in their corner versus giving them a reason to believe in their platform and vote FOR THEM

I never said there wasn't racism at work in this or most other countries and cultures, there clearly is. And I'm the one sensitive to race issues? Really? Every fucking viewpoint stupid Syd has ends in "racism in the antebellum south", what I'm sensitive to is constant crybaby race baiting from the Reverend Syd.

Mainly because the antebellum south represents the worst aspects of society. Even today, they exploit labor so that a bunch of kentucky fried assholes can line their pockets just a little bit more before they kick the bucket and transfer their wealth to their progeny who go on and spout about how hard they worked to be spit out of the same vagina that the kentucky fried asshole was once all up in (unless it was a black vagina, in which case it doesn't count)

He's talking about an issue where race and racism is clearly linked to it so he mentioned that part...that's not being sensitive/reactive to it, it's simply touching on one of the main, if not THE main point.

Its only clear if you start forming your opinion by assuming you know the evil motives behind the law. Without the made up and unproven motive you have a law that applies to everyone. This ain't Jim Crow because there is no segregation, it applies to everyone.

simply not true DelV

there's a huge reason one party is wholly behind this and the other not so much

change voting but not health care simply doesn't make sense at all and lines up perfectly with the FUCK the poor mentality

no care and now no voice...corps are people

it all lines up

Jim Crow applied to everyone. It just so happened that it prevented blacks from voting.

Oliver got a show on HBO and they said goodbye to him tonight during what was supposed to be his last bit. Of course it never got off the ground and it was a nice farewell. Oliver got pretty emotional.
