I found it to be a tough listen.
Anthony was getting specific with names at the beginning and Opie said he wouldn't get specific. Finally, Opie jumped out from his corner and started throwing jabs. They just sound tired and Opie seems to be the one pushing the agenda of ending their career together. Anthony sounded less like a baby.

Its an intersting perspective. I'd always assumed Anthony was a perma-slacker and Opie basically produced-hosted as far as sponsor relationship thing. Its interesting to hear that Anthony took the lions share of those meetings, and Opie doesn't refute that.
Furthermore, if this ever came, I always envisioned it would be Anthony who'd force the hand of a breakup. It always seemed like Opie, who's ambitious and to use a film analogy, a better director than an actor, realized how important Anthony was to actually making the show entertaining. Anthony seemed really hurt that Opie is the one talking about spreading his wings.
It feels amazingly like Mike and the Mad Dog, and a breakup seems inevitable. They should probably do it even if they patch things up, and reunite in a year. It seems like a great gimmick to market around.
I guess they should have let them take the week off, this definately seems like a blow off to a lot of tension.

I gotta side with Anthony in this spat. Opie just never seems satisfied. He really is the one constantly bitching about lack of respect or how stupid management is. Anthony takes more sick days but it seems to me that Opie would be more of a pain in the ass to the bosses. Opie just cant accept that The Opie and Anthony Show does not have the power he imagines it does.

It felt really real. Opie is really emotional over this CBS thing and Anthony's being upbeat, and I think that got under Opie's skin like he's being TOO happy. Right now it's really raw and Opie didn't think a joke that Anthony made was funny and Opie smirked. That ticked off Ant and it escalated from there. It seemed like one of those fights that couples have that could either break them up, or make them stronger.
I know I've been involved in discussions about how the show has changed and I don't like the way Anthony has changed. I agreed with what Opie was saying today about Ant and his priorities, attitudes and distractions, but in no way do I want them to break up. They're good together.
I had to switch off for a little while, and when I came back Colin was there. Was he scheduled, or did he run over to put out the fire?

I can't access at work. Synopsis, please?
Opie poked fun at Anthony eating on the air, calling it annoying and Anthony said, Well you've been doing it for 16 years. And then it was into the back lot. Anthony: you've been in a pissy mood since this happened. Opie: don't go there, don't go there
(repeat 12 more times). Opie, well, don't get on me because you finally feel like doing the show again. Anthony: fuck you and your passive agressive jabs! Opie: we're going in different directions, we shouldn't let this get ugly, we shouldn't fight, we should just think about ending it.
From there, a laundry list of who did what, Opie missed meetings for XYZ, Anthony missed shows due to gambling and girlfriend issues, Opie harps more on the fact they should be breaking up, and as people mentioned above, it actually did feel like that post breakup cooldown of "wow, that was crazy, its over, but we do have history and we can't just bail"
I wouldn't read to much into it making or not making the replay, it could spell bit either way, but I don't feel the need to be ahead of the curve with definitive speculation of bit or not. As I wrote above, Mr. B's theory is that if it makes the air its a bit, maybe its a meta foldback in itself.
I think the answer will be found with our buddays, because if they play into this, I think its more bit and if its ignored, it would feel a lot more real.

This has been mentioned a few times in the past on the show. When Opie and Anthony first started Opie did most if not all of the management stuff for them for obvious reasons, he was more in the know and just had the experience. I think he did it up until they got fired for the sex for Sam thing.
Then once they came to XM Anthony took over doing a bunch of it. I just assumed that this was sort of fair since Opie did it for a long time. So I am surprised that it was brought up as an issue.

I find show without Opie to be unbearable. I find them sloppy and loud and not funny at all because it give Anthony and his yes men free range to suck.
I love shows without Anthony because there is a break from all the hate and to be honest it's a breath of fresh air. It's nice not to always wonder if a political/gun/blacks/rich bragging/ rant will bring the show to halt.

Here is what I can tell you from working in advertising and dealing with radio for years. Ant was right about 1 thing, Opie is a complete pain in the ass to deal with and dosn't know how to treat sponsors correctly. From refusing to meet, not reading or reading ad copy purposefully wrong he is not thought of very poorly and this definitely negatively effects the show from a corporate perspective.
Now, I am a Ant supporter because he is actually funny. The shows he & Norton did when Opie was on his Honeymoon killed. The shows Opie does w/ out Ant suck...peanut butter hat...are you f'ing kidding me??? That is the hackiest crap ever. Opie was the driving force to get them where they were but he really doesn't bring anything to the table. Anthony makes joke, Norton interviews people and Opie does nothing...he is right it is time to move on.

Anthony makes joke, Norton interviews people and Opie does nothing...he is right it is time to move on.
thank GOD someone else thinks this way. i like opie, he keeps the show moving. but i'm an ant supporter 1000%. he's awesome on the show. those shows during the honeymoon were so much better because they can actually talk and have discussions without being interrupted all the time with useless non-points.

I agree. I hate to pick between the two, but I would have to side with Anthony here. Opie snapped and him and Anthony said you are in a crappy mood.
That shouldn't lead Opie to tear anthony a new asshole.
I do think Opie cares more about the show then Anthony does. He's probably right there. Both of them have fuck you money anyway so it shouldn't matter to either of them - but it clearly matters to Opie.
I mean the Jill Nicolini stuff was last summer and Anthony's latest poker tournament thing was back in November. That's a long time ago.
I think Anthony "calling in sick" to the "Funniest Listener Contest" @ Comix last week was the thing that really pissed Opie off. I think they knew then that Krock was flipping formats and that's why the event wasn't promoted as heavily as events in the past.

Opie seems to care about doing radio.
Anthony doesn't seem to care about doing radio.
Whats funny about this statement is that for years Opie said "Once this show is over I'm done with radio". It seems lately like his mind has gotten him into a different place and he's more into it then ever. I'm a huge fan of both of them. I always was an Opie fan when other people talked shit on him. Some of the shit he says and does has me laughing the hardest. I felt at times he would over explain things and over break things down to the audience but he seems to have gotten away from that. Anthony is a great talent as well. People want him to not speak his views but I enjoy it even if I completely disagree with him. If people want him gone then they're idiots. I feel like the show might end but if it does it enjoy it for what it was and is. Then choose sides later.
First off, O is right about A, as has been documented in the Gvac classic: 'Anthony Cumia is Mentally Unstable.'
That said, O could never carry a talk format show by himself....A could.
Opie could do a show similar to the first time they were in Boston, where it's a talk/music mix....Opie and Jimmy would be a great talk show.
There's definitely an audience for Anthony, but I wouldn't listen to him, with what his gimmick has become these days.
So I guess I'd choose Opie, because I'd be more likely to listen to him, but Ant's probably better suited to find a post-split audience.

They almost never do this stuff on the air.
I imagine Jimmy would go with Opie, since they've kind of alluded that they're pretty good friends, whereas, Ant pretty much goes his own way after the show each day.
Of course, I wouldn't rule out Opie doing something like moving to Philly and doing radio here.
I called it months ago, that Ant was positioning himself to become a Conservative talk style guy after the O&A show eventually ended, which is why he talks predominately about Obama, guns, and taxes these days.
I'd be almost certain that Ant would do that type of show if they do split up.

Speculation... (1) Opie is unhappy with the product they've been putting out and thinks he could do better on his own and would like to prove it. [Opie always seems irritated when people say he wouldn't be in radio if not for Anthony. He's a competitive guy and this may be prodding him into trying it solo]
(2) They got the bulk of their money already and as the stock market has tanked so has the value of their portfolio. Opie would like to have a kid and may be thnking he needs the money.
(3) I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Upon hearing the replay of the argument within the context of the show, I now think it was 100 percent shoot. There was just some stuff that was too real for these two ham'negger hacks to have been acting out.
Opie seems to be in an odd place, he sounds broken and defeated often, as I mentioned in that other thread, but then he has this delusional bravado that will sweep over him occasionally. It really sounds to me like he feels Anthony is interchangable and replacable and Opie drives the bus. Opie may drive, but Anthony is the engine, and both are going nowhere without each other. I don't know what he expects or what he thinks he's capable of, but to hear him shit on Jim Kerr and Preston & Steve lately leaves me to wonder, does he think he'd be THAT much better solo? Stern in his heyday he ain't. Hell, Stern today, he ain't.
But whatever happens, I can't begrudge either guy for their choices. They gave us a good run, gave Stern his best direct challenge ever, and most importantly, introduced many of us to Ron and Fez, so for that, I'll be grateful forever.

To a degree, Ant is interchangable with Opie....Opie could probably get any one of most of the comics on the show to form a show with him if they split, including Jimmy.
Ant spends all day in his mansion playing video games and on PalTalk...how many times have the 'friends of the show' kind of jabbed at how they never talk to Ant outside of the studio?
Opie will get custody of all teh funny...Ant will get custody of Danny.
That's a bigger raping than his divorce settlement.

Yeah but being a glorified MC and board op is much more difficult than what Anthony brings. He seems shackled to me as much as anything, and I think Opie has streamlined the free flowing pacing out of bits they had on NEW. Topics change before they get started. Not to insuate WNEW and early XM was a shang-ri-la, there was no shortage of bits beaten into the ground. But to paraphrase a Ron and Fez bit from a few weeks back, the high were much higher.
Anthony really is a tremendous voice talent and he's quick witted as well. Without piling on and being too mean, Opie really is a dope some times. His culture consists of viral video and what was on TV last night, and not because he enjoyed it but because its material fodder for the show. His musical sphere of cool is Cobain. Well fucking Nevermind is almost 20 years old. Would you take seriously a host who was still stuck on Jim Morrison in 1988? Well thats the basic equivalent. The guy lacks any life experience and it shows when he has to interview people.
The show is broken and needs fixing. Its way too negative and the nasty out weighs the fun, but Opie alone would be worth listening too just for the trainwreck. Norton isn't too much brighter. Who else ya got, Bob Kelly? Jim Jefferies? Patrice, Colin Quinn, Jason Ellis? All good to great third mics but not a pillar of the show.
I'll grant you this, Opie and the Louis CK could fly, but I think Louis would grow frustrated by Opie's stupidity if they were together consistently and why would Louis give up a lucrative standup career.

I'm on Opie's side.
And not for nothing, but it's pretty obvious they've been having these kinds of arguments off the air for quite awhile. The only neato detail to this whole pissing contest is that it took place on air, so as to give listeners a heads up to the show ending soon.
And it WILL end soon.
The show's been spinning its wheels for a long time. I didn't start bitching and whining for nothing, or because I demand WNEW days. They just don't have it in them anymore. Anybody who didn't see this coming is a mouth-breather.

That's what I am thinking. Opie does more than people give he credit for, when he was on his honeymoon the show sucked. Ant is the funnier of the two, but I think it takes more than that to make a show succeed. My take it Op is the brains of the operation.

I never heard them in Boston, but since the beginning at WNEW it's been the same: Opie's angry, Opie's frustrated, Opie dosen't want to deal with the sponsors (including live reads), Opie doesn't want to listen to management. None of this is going to change with Anthony gone.
Maybe an Anthony morning show and an Opie afternoon show would be interesting. Then as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, they can reunite in a couple of years. How much time is left on their XM contract?

I think it was a shoot. Sometimes a good venting goes a long way.
Ant even had some good shots on Opie. I like when he pointed out that Opie was in "another" pissy mood. We give Ant a lot of shit, but Opies just as big a pompous dick at times. Not attending meetings? It really doesn't look good if its the "Opie and Anthony" show and the Opie part just says FU.
Opie: "Lets not even go into what people say about you" Cringe times 10. I know a lot of that material would come from this very board that I'm sure Op trolls more then he lets on.
It really had the feeling that one more comment from either one would have been all out war on the air........which I would have made cummsies for.
Thank God for the Paltalk dig.

Yeah i said it.
I thought I was the only one that noticed this!
His humor became a lot darker about a week before he made the actual announcement. Coincidence?
I'm kind of disappointed by this. In my mind these guys are good friends and they hang out and are all buddy,buddy.. at least that's the way they portray their relationship.. not so much in words but they have an on air chemistry that makes me think of them in that light. It's like hearing your parents say they want a divorce.
I enjoyed both the Opie and Jimmy show and the Ant and Patrice show a few weeks back. If I had to choose I'd probably choose O&J. Jimmy just makes that whole show for me. Op is a brilliant conductor but he would never survive on his own in my opinion. I think Ant is funny most days but he doesn't seem to have the drive that Opie does. It's a shame because they seem, on the outside, to be a perfect pearing. They both bring something to the table that compliments the other.. just my 2 cents...

Intelligent? Really, OK most of his political points are taken from Sean Hannity's show or some other FOX News Joke. Whenever somebody backs him into a corner he just yells and hangs up on the guy. Fluently is a joke, just a joke.
Opie's only talent is to keep the show on the air. See without him, Ant wouldn't last 2 weeks. He would be back to slinging tin, just like his brilliant self was doing before OPIE gave him a shot. What was Opie doing? Oh thats right, he was already in radio. As far as nothing to relate too, I find I have nothing to relate to with Anthony. I'm not 67 years old, I do not have a "theater" in my basement, I don't find any white trash ho with a pussy attractive, I don't find sitting around drinking and talking about niggers a good Friday night, and I don't surround myself with yes men who give me an inflated ego.

Lately i've been feeling guilty for kinda bashing opie. he really is good people. but i tend to like anthony better. no matter what story he tells from growing up, or any recent news story they cover now, he always has insight that's spot on. at least i think the same way as what he's usually going for. he's funny, he "gets it" with pretty much every topic possible, and he's just got good awareness and insight into situations and the funny.
i feel like opie interrupts at the exact WORSE time. and my one pet peeve is he is HORRIBLE with callers. i would give 1000 bucks if he allowed ONE caller thru without trampling over them without letting them even finish the first sentence. he literally talks over every single caller. and he doesnt know how to PAUSE. he says something, then he pauses like its the other person's time to respond, but THEN he starts talking again, and it throws everybody off. now you got the caller trying to stutter talk at the same time that opie is trying to stutter talk, and its just a mess. take a lesson from ronnie b. he handles phone calls perfectly, lets them speak their point then responds.
