Why not? He's going there to explain the stimulus package and how it'll benefit Americans. It's basically an infomercial. It's not like he's going to do standup.

It's business. Actors go to plug their movies, he's going to plug his deal.

I would rather him go on Leno then to have to answer "how you like in the NCAA tounry?" 100 times. i really dont care what team he picks for the super bowl either. just run the country and get us out the mess we are in. Go on Leno to push your deal if you feel that you need to.

I'm not being partisan here at all, but GW Bush already did a great job of that.

I mean, Clinton got a BJ and was doing odd insertions in the fucking oval office, and that's only what we FOUND OUT. God only knows what we don't know about.

I have no problems with brackets or going on a show and break it down to the people. Wanna know why?

Most Americans are dumb. We don't like watching the news, we don't read the wallstreet journal.

People don't fucking know what advantages this plan has FOR THEM. That's part of my job. I just finished a fucking presentation explaining what ARRA means to Joe Schmo, and I fucking schooled a tax lawyer on it who still didn't know what the fuck it mean until I showed her the goddamn language from Congress.

Obama needs to go on and say the following:

1) If you're first time homebuyer - and that means you haven't bought or lived in a home you owned for three years, not REALLY a first time home buyer - you get 8 grand. Free.

2) You're getting a tax break that's going to be figured into your pay starting 4/1.

3) Any sales tax you pay on a car becomes deductible.

There's more, but that's the start of it.

Personally, I've always wondered why presidents didn't appear on talk shows or news shows at least once in a while. It's a medium that people are much more open to to actually listen to what's being said. While being interviewed by Leno is as softball as it gets, I wish presidents showed up on shows like Meet the Press.

Its actually the sign of a really good communicator. Let me explain:

If you are President of the United States you have very little in common with regular people. So to communicate on a free & easy basis you find a "common" point of identification to establish your credibility and rapport with them.

The concept is based in a high-level communication theory developed by Kenneth Burke (http://www.acjournal.org/holdings/vol1/iss3/burke/quigley.html). It is the sign of a great communicator who can do it without pandering.

I've become convinced that SP1!, Jerseysean, & WMT are weird Gvac board characters. He just sits at home and gets all the conservative talking points from all the awful shows and makes posts without changing a word from any of the talking points.

Obama shouldn't have made this joke and to be honest he shouldn't have been on the Tonight Show to begin with. I think it's a very good thing that this administration will be much more scrutinized and open to the media than the previous administration, however I'd prefer Obama have an image as our President rather than perpetuating his image as pop-culture icon. I originally made fun of Leno but I'm now seriously starting to think that his "waterhead" comment was actually a Freudian slip. I can see him thinking to himself: "Holy Shit! The President of the United States just made a Special Olympics joke on my show. This will be all over the news tomorrow and could very well blow-up in Obama's face." Jay then blurts out "waterhead" instead of "waterdog".

While it was obvious that Obama had no idea what "waterhead" referred to I can't believe that Jay, as a comedian, has never heard the word "waterhead". His use of the term had to have been unconscious.

I havent seen the video, but reading the article, Obama's comments dont seem all that bad.

He was talking about his own bowling score, Leno said it's not bad, and it seems Obama wouldve been better saying, "In the Special Olympics." The end. But ok, he's not a polished comedian, so he flubbed the line, or whatever.

If the special interests groups that usually jump on this sort of non-thing DONT jump on him, then I'll see a double standard. But I personally dont find it offensive or mean spirited.

The waterhead comment by Leno does seem derogatory.

That's what I'm not understanding about the "IF THIS WAS BUSH THEY'D BE GOING CRAZY!!!!!" idea. What exactly would be different?

If this was Bush here's what would have happened:
Some of the left would have attacked him.
Some of the right would have said "let's just move on"

If Bush did it, there'd be less of the right saying "he fucked up, let's move on." And there'd probably be a lot of "If you attack the president, you're attacking America and you hate freedom."

I'm a pretty conservative person (or was, I suppose), but I'm just so fucking sick of the "attack him because he's the other party" shit that goes on. It bothered the fuck out of me when liberals did it, now its all conservatives do. If someone likes Obama, its because they bought into the hype, not because they agree with him.

And constantly hearing nonsense like "forced liberalism is worse than Nazis" and blaming Obama for the BofA bailout infuriates me. Why participate in a political conversation if you're just going to be a nonsensical repeater.

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

Since I hate that fucking comparison no matter what side makes it and because all the morons of the country love to harp on this non-existent link, I will attack.

When people make those comparisons, it shows they don't know anything about who the Nazis were, what they did, or what the differences between Nazis and democratically elected American politicians are. It's just the equivalent of yelling in class "Boooo, Teech! Skool droolz! Fuck you!"

Governors of Alaska are the equivalent of small-town Canadian mayors when it comes to executive experience. Senators are bigger deals than governors ever were. And all the factoids aside, she really had no clue what she was doing. I found her agonizingly patronising, insultingly simplistic, and out of touch with most of the country with her Alaskan bird's-eye-view of the USA. You spend a remarkable amount of time defending your lack of political ideologies for someone who spends most of their posts talking about politics.Oh I have political ideologies, its just that neither side represents me. Its also why I choose not to vote in presidential elections and just vote locally, its easier to make changes there and get out the morons.

If I had to describe my political leanings it would be slightly right but there are so many points I disagree with them on that in those circles I get called a liberal. I am anti-drug war, anti-anti-abortion, pro stem cell research, and dont give a shit about whether gays get married. That about most of their main talking points and I am on the left of their arguments so in their little world Im the enemy. Yet friends I have on the left think that because I wont jump on board that man caused global warming completely and that I am against gun control that makes me a neo con. There is nothing in presidential politics that I believe is going to suit me anytime soon.

Which is why we can't take his supposedly sarcastic posts seriously.

And Obama's special olympics joke? For a country that is becoming way to PC, I thought it was refreshing - and, oh my... he's like.... like..... one of us! That was a real moment, not phony.

Critics of his going on the tonight show are swinging at ANYTHING to make this look bad. It's not a big deal. It's not a monumental first and it's not going to make anyone think less of him who already does just because he's a Democrat.I am usually sarcastic in my posts here, especially the past few weeks but its been fun to watch everyone yell at their screens.

And refreshing that you think hes on of us? You can hear him practically tripping over himself backpedaling after the words left his mouth. I would have had more respect for the comment if he hadnt went immediately to apologize, everyone makes slow jokes and we rarely get in trouble for it, usually because their tongues are too large to lodge a complaint.

I dont care about what party hes in, its been obvious to me for the past 10 years that party doesnt matter when you are president, they pretty much are controlled by a select few in the upper echelon since they have all the money.

But Obama is taking hits because of his comment. Why do we act like we live in a vacuum where no one criticizes or attacks Obama? I don't understand it.Hits? Please, if that were bush or any other republican in washington they would be every news stations lead story, I have heard it mentioned once today and that was along with his apology with the announcer adding sincere in the broadcast. Yeah he has taken a couple hits but dont even think it would have been 100 times worse if it was bush or mccain.

I thought he was great- Barrack Obama, the hippest president we've ever had.No, that honor goes to Teddy Roosevelt.

Hits? Please, if that were bush or any other republican in washington they would be every news stations lead story, I have heard it mentioned once today and that was along with his apology with the announcer adding sincere in the broadcast. Yeah he has taken a couple hits but dont even think it would have been 100 times worse if it was bush or mccain.

I've seen and heard it mentioned on every news medium I've digested today. It was on the both 6 o'clock news broadcasts I watched, in the radio show I was listening to this morning and the one I listened to in the afternoon.

This is why people think you are a Hannity or Limbaugh drone. The whole "CONSERVATIVES ARE TREATED WORSE THAN LIBERALS BECAUSE THE MEDIA IS AGAINST US!" line is a typical right wing talking point that has no basis in reality. Obama is humiliated by this and the appropriate channels are taking him to task over it. The same exact thing would have happened if it was Bush.

You completely missed my point, I never said it wasnt mentioned, what I said was that if it was bush it would be the lead on every channel at the top of every hour: RetardGate '09!!!! Yes hes doing damage control but they are not salivating over this and riding it into the ground like they would with a republican.

That is as far as I go in the conservative/liberal debate, it doesnt take a limbaugh or hannity drone to see the parties arent treated the same in the media but I dont think the media is biased, they go for what sells, CNN, FOX, MSNBC and the rest all go for what gets them ratings. Its not necessarily a bias but people love to hate rich people and for some reason people all like to think republicans are just rich people who stole all the money to get rich. That being said, I haaaaaaaaate limbaugh and think hes fucking up politics by spreading false information to his moron dittoheads, its another thing that friends of mine on the right says makes me a lib.

The perceived bias is about what sells, not just liberalism, its easy for the majority to hate the rich and they sell it, just like when a dem gets in trouble they paint him as privileged, they ruined condit and it looks like he was innocent. Again just because I perceive a bias you shouldnt automatically assume its about ideology.

Meh, I could care less about the "comment".

I'm more concerned with his fan tour. WTF the worlds falling apart, get back to your desk and work! He's out there like he's got a fucking movie coming out next week. It's a little disturbing to me.

Being the president is a lot like being an actor.
He's on the show promoting himself, and his policies.
I think doing the dance is just as important as going to Congress, or lighting a Christmas tree, or any of the dumb shit the President has to do.

It sucks that that's the way it is, but it is.

Its never been necessary for any other president to go on an entertainment program like Obama did this week. Why is it now necessary for Obama? Can't he get his programs across by means that have been perfectly adequate for every POTUS that came before him????

If he avoids making decisions he avoids failure. So look for more vacations & frivilous stuff in the future from Chocolate Jesus.

Nobody said it was necessary. It's a way for him to explain some of things being done to an audience that often doesn't tune in at all to press conferences and the like. It's an attempt to capitalize on an aspect of the medium that hasn't been used before to reach more people, similar to how the administration is using the internet to an unprecedented extent.

Though having read your next two posts, I regret wasting the time giving you a serious answer.

Bush had plenty of speaking gaffes. It shouldn't be a problem at all for you to find examples of such a overwhelming and hysterical media deluge in regards to Bush.

Obama's comments started making the made rounds before the interview aired and was a major story last night and today. One main difference you'll see in this compared to Bush's snafus is that Obama has already addressed it and apologized. That's the easiest way for any politician to defuse a comment that's questionable but ultimately little more than a punchline. Bush and co. rarely used this tactic and always plowed forward as if nothing happened, or if he did refer to them it would be with another awful joke or backhanded comment that fell flat. A lot of this comes down to the ability of the person making the mistakes being able to handle them. There's simply not much to this story since he's already apologized.
