Hey Doc...quick question - I woke up with a hideously enormous sty in my left eye. I've been putting hot compresses on it all morning and that seems to have helped a bit, but it's still swollen.

Should I put an eye patch on?

Please say yes.

I've always greatly admired men like Snake Plissken, Nick Fury, and Rooster Cogburn.

Ok, there are two kinds of inflammed eyelid lumps:

1) Stye (or Hordeolum)
This is an infection of the eyelash follicle and is usually mildly painful. Generally they go away without causing any permanent effects.

2) Chalazion
this is an infection of a gland in the EYELID that is usually larger, more painful and can cause a permanent lump in the eyelid after the inflammation is gone

Warm compresses are the treatment of choice. An ophthalmologist may have to cut out a chalazion. It's a really fun process. First they strap you into a chair (not really, but they ought to), flip your eyelid inside out, and INJECT IT WITH LIDOCAINE. YIKES! I've had it done 3 times and it gets worse every time. Anyway, after that they just scoop it out; it will resolve after a few days of healing.
