The debate about responsibility is a quinessential discussion in any communications program. If you are a serious student of communications, you are taught the Burkean theory of identification and the congregation/segregation components of the theory. It is the job of a good communicator to congregate their audience but to do it resonsibly and to avoid segregating others while doing it.

This is the ethic of the profession and many broadcasters are consistently allowed to break that code just for a ratings point and ad revenue.

Here's the thing: I don't believe that the guy in Pittsburgh that started this whole thing "just snapped" in any way. If he'd "just snapped", he probably would have just shot his mom or whoever was there at the time.

He put on full body armor, prepared a collection of fully automatic weapons, and laid in wait for cops to arrive. That is not "just snapping". That's a planned act.

So it's really kind of irrelevant to the topic of gun control. If that fuck in Pittsburgh hadn't been able to get guns, he probably would have tried to build a bomb. He was going to do something, by whatever means available to him.

Several years ago (back home) a guy snapped and entered the highway going the wrong way, at night, with his lights off, at high speed. He took out 8 people (if I remember correctly) including a family of 5.

ANYBODY can perform a violent act if they snap whether they own a gun or not.

I am not a huge NRA guy, but I do know about mental illness. It is much more scary than a gun.

I will give you that the entire purpose of a gun is destruction. It is solely created to maim or kill an opponent. I don't know how anybody can disagree with that.

However, the actual problem is that people are snapping and doing violent things. My earlier (real life) example of the guy killing people with his car, somebody setting a fire that kills a building full of people, and somebody mixing chemicals and setting off a bomb are all ways that unstable people have killed or maimed that didn't use guns. There are tons of other examples.

It is the mental instability that is really at issue - almost anything can be used to do violence.
