Yeah yeah, it's Hitler's birthday and an excuse to get stoned, or shoot up your school,
but before all that, it was Patriot's day.

Info here. (http://boston.about.com/od/historylandmarks/a/PatriotsDay.htm)

Not mentioned in the article, but certainly of note, there's a Red Sox game at 11am.

So, does this mean GW Bush was trying to steal a holiday when he tried to make Sept 11th Patriot Day?

Nope. I'm certain that's the reason his doesnt flow off the tongue as easily as it would with an apostrophe S.

And he didnt just try, he succeeded. September 11th IS Patriot Day.

I know it was observed in 2002, but I haven't heard anything about it since. They still lower the flag and stuff, but I haven't heard it called Patriot Day since '02. I never understood the association with the word "patriot" with 9/11.

I believe the reference was to those who died, and those who responded that day who represented the best of America.

But yeah, most people call it "9/11" or worse, 9-1-1... which, frankly is a telephone number.

But today marks the first battles of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord.

That's why I don't get it. The people who died were victims. The people who responded were heroes. None of them were patriots.

But today marks the first battles of the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord.
These people were patriots.

As much as I'd like to keep this about Patriot'S day..I'll note that the definition of a patriot is one who loves and defends his or her country. The people in the PA plane are perhaps the best example of defending, though there were others, and who's to say none of them loved their country? Beside that, the events of that day, you'll remember, made us all feel like patriots.

the people on the pa plane did what they could to save themselves.

i dont think that fighting back, in this instance, made them patriots.

unless one of them stood up and said, 'you can kill us but in the end we will have defended an american monument'

--in this situation, who would act like that? sure i love my country, but id probably let the washington monument be hit by a plane in exchange for my life--

I wont let this go the way of the pirate thread.
Ive given you my definition of a patriot. If you wanna shit on people from September 11 2001, thats your business.

THIS thread is not even about 9/11/01 or Patriot Day.

It's about Patriot's Day...to which I wish you all a happy.

I too do not want to defile this thread more than it has become past these two comments.

I served my country in a way that many can not or choose not to, one of the few and so does Chris. Not all serve these particular ways; whether you are a waiter, stock broker, doctor, or operate a convenience store you serve this country to some degree. Because with out the waiters, etc. I would have no one to serve. We are all patriots if we do so to not only serve ourselves, our god(s), but also the place in which we live.

But, when someone dies for our country such as those did fighting the British in the Revolutionary War they are the truest form of patriots.

There are other forms, such as those who responded to the World Trade Center after the planes hit; trying to rescue others. They gave all they could to help fellow Americans and this is not a task that many would take, or could take. They too are patriots and should not be shit upon in this thread, or any other form.
