I am socially awkward. It sometimes inhibits me from functioning normally out in public.
However, tonight I was hanging out with a guy I work with and we ended up having a good time talking and shooting the shit for a few hours.
We then realized that even though we have very different positions at work, we share a lot in common in our personal lives.
This is interesting to me. I suspected that we would not ever be on the same page about things but, we seem to be.
I like my new friend.
Have you ever made a new friend that you didn't expect to make?

Did you ask him to hang out again?
If he says no, can you change the title of the thread to:
I thought I made a new friend, I was wrong.
How do you define "friend" different from "aquantance" or "person who works at the same place as I do", after just hanging out with them that one time? Was there an exchange of numbers of hanging out again?
In that case I make friends all the time.

I know what you mean, there is a guy at work in the new position I started and just yesterday he starts talking about Star Trek out of the blue because no one was around and it turns out that we both used to do the exact same things as kids and we ended up laughing about the stuff we apparently both were thinking as kids think. Its cool making a new friend, but weird when the friendship can be strained when your job gets in the way of it. This guy is kind of like my supervisor, and now that we have bonded, he still has to make sure I work well and I shouldn't joke with him in front of others, etc.

It happened to me at work also. This new friend was training me for work, which involved hours of driving and being in the car together. The first day was horrible because he was talking about Jesus Christ all the time and how he was saved ....blah blah blah.... I just wanted to learn the job asap and get out of there!
I spent a couple more days with him and realized there was another side of him besides just the Jesus Christ talk. I think if he was a woman we would hang out a lot together because we like a lot of the same stuff, but he's a man and we can't really be friends like that. He actually has a good positive influence in my life now and it has a lot to do with him being a Christian. He has not converted me into joining the Christian church he attends, but I think he makes me want to be a better person in my daily life.

Great questions. Yes, there was a mutual "let's grab a drink again" type thing.
Also, I think I can easily discriminate the difference between the two. As of right now, I assume the proper title to be acquaintance as to our only hanging out once. However, seeing as how we share similar interests, I can it being defined as friendship.

I made new friend at the bar last night. He was a disheveled old guy in a dirty suit who smelled like piss and who talked for over an hour in a barely audible voice.
Yeah, I attract only the best.
