I just got a summons yesterday and I'm excited! First, it's at the least one day out of the office and I'm salaried so I still get paid. Second, I like it!

You would want me on your jury, I'm fair and will listen to both sides and if I truly believe there is reasonable doubt I would be the lone holdout lobbying on your behalf. I will not put someone in jail if I don't truly believe they are guilty in the courts eyes, so screw avoiding hung juries, I would stick to my guns.

I've been summoned twice before and been chosen both times. I don't know why I keep getting picked. I have to go for the third time on June 1st, will I be 3 for 3?

The first one was in Houston and it was for the county, a DUI case. The second one was my favorite because it was a Federal Court and it was much more cushy. I got paid more, they partially reimbursed me for mileage and gas AND they had a fully stocked jury room with drinks and snacks. The courtrooms were nicer and they had screens in front of each juror chair to see the exhibits.

Be forewarned! While criminal trials tend to be exciting (at times), most cases on the courts docket are civil claims, which can be loooooong boring and tedious testimony about terms of a contract or insurance policy, etc......

But good luck!

I have jury duty next month. The ironic thing is that I haven't done shit in the past few months and would gladly do it but if I'm just starting a job, it'll be such bullshit.

I'm with ya' Aggie. I've been called three times. Once I was called a year after I had already served (in NY I think once you get called you're not supposed to get called again for 4 or 5 years) but I went anyway.

Nothing too exciting. One car accident, one assault and one DWI. But after watching so many law shows on TV it's nice to see how the system really works.

I was actually called for Grand Jury in Bridgeport the exact day that they were going to indict Michael Skacill(sp) the Kennedy relative for killing her neighbor. Thankfully he was delayed to the following week otherwise it was going to be a circus. When I arrived there were still a bunch of News org. There.

You got all these family members who practice law and they pick you for the jury? I'd boot you off of mine in a heartbeat!

That's what I thought, but they don't even ask you that! The main thing is that you don't know anyone personally involved in the case. I think beyond that they are desparate for qualified members.

I'm 36 and have never been called. I think it's because I constantly move to an array of hastily assembled hovels in order to keep the government from knowing where I am.

My dad always told me that if you want to get out of jury duty, tell the judge you'd make a great juror because you can tell if a guy is guilty just by looking at him.

I served a couple years ago for two weeks. It was good to get off of work and play law and order. It's fun trying to convince other jurors to convict a kid for murder, even though they felt guilty about it.

Kid killed another one when he was 15, charged as an adult. LIFE.

See ya the fuck later punk!

You were on a murder trial??? That intrigues and scares me because of the implications for the defendant. So far just a DUI and a federal age discrimination case.

I've been called twice and learned that I'm fascinated by the process of voir dire.

In the first case, I was chosen for the panel but the lawyers had not done their due diligence during their pretrial Discovery phase, which came out just after the voir dire had selected us to the panel ... and then the case was dismissed. If the attorneys in that case had asked questions relating to divorces rather than relating to medical personnel and substance abuse, I might have been excused from the panel.

In the second case, the incident took place in a part of town where I'd be terrified to walk during broad daylight ... and have trouble driving through at night ... so I was dismissed.

I live in a new county now, so being called next time will be an adventure. Instead of New Brunswick, I'll have to schlep to Trenton.

Here they make us call once a week for 4 weeks and see if they call your name. I am in the same situation. Being self-employed and having to do this for a month kinda fucks things up.

A couple years ago, my call in day was Friday, after 5 pm. If they called my name I would have to go in on Monday. I was trying to plan a week long job in Atlanta. i tried the last week for them to let me know early, so i could plan for the trip and they wouldn't budge. Jury duty blows.

You were on a murder trial??? That intrigues and scares me because of the implications for the defendant. So far just a DUI and a federal age discrimination case.

Yeah, some 15 year old and a 13 year old were from the projects, different buildings that feuded with each other. The older kid took the hat from the younger kid, then later in the day them and some friends had a fight. Next day the older kid was seen being given a black hoodie from one of the gang leaders.

That night he followed the younger kids and his friends down an alley and shot at them. The kid took one in the back of the head and died and one of the other kids got hit but lived.

A ton of the witnesses retracted their statements because they got threatened by people. So the lawyer had to read their grand jury testimony and we had to figure out what the real story was.

It was a two week trial and we deliberated for two days, we ended up giving him life. Being it was all premeditated.

It was fun serve, plus I got two weeks off from work to do it.

Federal Circuit cases are bigger deals, too. They are the ones "everyone" talks about and have the potential to affect the practice of law for decades.

They'd best be fascinating!
