That worked for the Hulk because the Hulk backstory is pretty recognizable from television/comics, etc., although each backstory has some minor differences. You could show quick flashback images because our culture has a history with the character.

If there was no Godfather I and II, no one would have had history with Michael and showing the backstory in flashback scenes would be horrendous, especially since the story in the flashback scenes are more interesting than the Godfather III story.

It doesn't have to be detailed. Just some scenes of wrongdoing, paying off judges & politicians, etc. If it was stand alone movie you don't have to know the full backstory of Michael Corleone, just that he was a mob boss & crook trying to redeem himself in his later years and finally take his family legit.

But Epo is also right, the story is pretty unwieldy anyway.

The tragedy is how this person's loyalty to his family (an admirable trait) led him to becoming a murderer/rackateer that becomes a stranger to his wife.

That's an important part of the Godfather III itself.

Oh yeah, I realize that. I just think that as opposed to with a TV show or feature film where there's an on-going relationship built up between the actors, these folks have to basically dive right in and exit the roles so quickly it has to be a strange thing psychologically, especially for the kids.

Same thing with folks who play husband/ wife. I saw one commercial where the "husband" slaps his "wife's" ass, and that had to be the oddest rehearsal interaction ever.

Director: "Hey Tom, why don't you end your line with some physical form of affection?"
Husband (to wife): "Want me to kiss you on the cheek?"
Wife: "Nah, how bout you smack me in the ass?"
Husband: "You got it!"
Director: "Roll cameras!"
