WASHINGTON - Metro confirms two trains have collided on the Red Line between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations. It happened close to the Fort Totten station, a Metro spokesperson said.
D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said one train was on top of the other train.
The number of injuries and the extent of the injuries could not be immediately confirmed. Mass casualty units were called to the scene.
Train traffic has been stopped in the area. Shuttle bus service has been requested, Metro said.
ABC 7 has multiple crews en route to the scene. Check back for further updates.

Shouldn't let trains ride on the same track heading towards each other.

Reported 2 dead. Looks like one train rear-ended the other, not sure how why they were single-lined.

6 dead.
And six more in serious to critical condition. The only other fatal Metro accident was in '82 when 3 were killed. If I remember correctly, it hardly made the news, because it happened on the same day as the Air Florida crash at the 14th Street bridge.

You can still take it as long as you aren't using the Red line. But prepare to have it take about an extra half hour. It's actually wreaking havoc up and down the whole East Coast. CSX trains are stopped, too.

You're lying right? No one is stupid enough to bring up 9-11 for a subway crash..

I don't know who "they" is. I haven't heard anything like that at all. If someone did, it was probably Fox.

This freaked me out because my brother takes the Metro to and from work and this happened right when he's usually going home. Fortunately he's taking job-required training this week at a facility he can drive to and from, so no train.

What freaked me out was that I have a very close friend that's visiting her sister in DC. I sent her a text asking if she had heard about the crash, and she didn't answer for quite a while.

What freaked me out is that I was in DC 15 years ago for a 6th grade trip. Strange how shit like this makes you think.
I recognized that immediately as the Ft. Totten area of the Red Line from riding that line all the time when I was going to CUA. The worst part is that it not only impacts the Red Line to and from Union Station, but it will also shut down MARC commuter service from Balmer.

Just ride the Green Line all the way...you can pick it up Greenbelt or College Park and just ride it all the way down to the Navy Yard

I can't even imagine what that's going to do to the commute this morning. The trains are packed already at rush hour, and now all those people that would normally take red line trains are gonna have to take trains on different lines. Oof.
They are running shuttles though...

Mrs. Mendy takes the red line from Bethesda to Crystal City.
Not gonna be fun today for her !

Shut up, fatass.
Two of the schools adjuncts were at a conference in Maryland yesterday and were on one of the trains - neither were seriously hurt, but it was a pretty intense, scary situation.
