View Full Version : What do you waste?

In this age of going green and carbon footprints, I was wondering about what I waste the most and I would have to say it's water. I leave the sink on unnecessarily when doing things like shaving or brushing my teeth, I leave the hose on after filling up the watering can while I water the plants, I pour a full glass of water, take a slug, then pour the rest out, and on and on. I really need to be more mindful, it's kind of ridiculous.
So what about you guys? What do you waste the most?

Fresh vegetables. I buy them weekly and wind up throwing out some simply because I don't use them within a reasonable amount of time.

It wastes money as well.

Straws. I use a lot of straws.

Me too, I use them all the time.

Water is probably the worst but electricity second. I leave lights and the TV on even when I'm not in the room and I keep it really cold in my house or else I get hot and cranky.

I am really good about conserving energy but my ac is set for 75 which can get expensive in the summer months. Luckily my power company of choice uses wind and solar power so I do not feel as bad.

My big 700-1000 watt computer stays on all the time but when it is asleep it only uses near 400 watts.

Milk, never use it all in time.

Sometimes food, it is hard to cook for one.

My Bronco is not so gas efficient (14 mpg), only oil company friendly.

That's about it, I recycle so I feel fairly good.

I have employees to fire!

I change mine frequently and clean my K&N air filter more often because it can get quite dusty up at my property during the summer months.

Man, I do not want an electric bill over $200 in my apartment. Plus I have ceiling fans and a fan on my computer desk.

I waste:

pop - I never finish a can
water - I take really long showers
TP - I like a really clean butt
computer paper - I make a lot of lists and then lose them
electricity - we sleep with the tv on and the kitchen light on
gas - I make a lot of unnecessary trips to Rochester
time
MONEY - I am always buying too much stupid crap!!

We recycle cans, but need to start doing more. Ever since my 6 year old had a study unit on recycling he is constantly telling me to recycle something. It gets a little annoying.

Aside from my breathe:annoyed:, I don't waste anything.

Tough economic times and seeing the toilet bowl this planet is becoming, I always make a conscience effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. If everybody did the little things it would add up to a Huge difference worldwide.

Water - When I am brushing my teeth, or scrubbing a pot I turn the water off until I am ready to rinse.
Paper towels. - The one towel I use to dry my hands before lunch is the same one I use for my lunch. And if in the kitchen I am just drying up a bit of water, I put that towel to the side for cleaning up floor spills.
TP - After many years of research I have figured out the precise number of sheets to properly clean my bum. Little or no waste. If I could just teach my TP wasting, toilet clogging chick!
Plastic shopping bags - Perfect for dog waste disposal
Veggies - When they start looking a bit limp it's a feast for our guinea pigs!
Water Bottles - I take on a day from home, then refill from the water cooler as needed. Sometimes I will use the same bottle for a couple of days.
Lights - I am systematically switching to compact fluorescents.
Recycling - If it is paper, plastic, glass or aluminum, it goes into the proper receptacle for weekly pick-up. My army of cans rivals anybody on the block.
The Kids - They are really pushing it at school. My boys get certificates every year and help around the house with what should be done. Boy Scouts are the same way!

Same here.

At home, not so much but when i am at work and not close to a recycling bin i just throw them in the trash...which i sbad because i always drink at least 3 bottles of water at work.

My boyfriend uses paper towels to wipe his hands off in the kitchen, despite pointing to towels laying right next to him.

I've actually been getting bothered by waste lately. Not enough to scold people or anything, it just personally bothers me.

I was eating a burger with my friend, and he stacked up a pile of 20 napkins, used one and threw the rest away. He filled up 5 ketchup cups, used one, and threw the rest away. It just annoyed me. It seems so fucking stupid to acquire that much stuff for one meal, and then just throw them out.

Yea thats true. Just got my electric bill today. I have a brand new high efficiency AC, and all brand energy efficient windows. Unfortunately I also have a pool with a heater, and bar mini fridge, and 2 fridge/freezers.

Grand total for this month: $738.12

HOLY SHIT!

In my last house, energy efficient everything, hot tub that cycled 2 times every 24 hours, my computers, networking gear, AC set at prior stated settings, ceiling fans running 24 hours a day, and my love for cooking my highest bill for July of last year was $280 (just looked). That was a 1700 sq ft house built 5 years ago.

I think my biggest problem is my thermostat is upstairs by the kitchen. So basically in the hottest room in the house which make my AC kick alot more then it should be.

I also have a 95 gallon reef aquarium and I dont think the lights or pump help either.

The year I got the pool for one month I had that, 2 fridges and freezers, 2 mini bar fridges, a good humor freezer, the AC and an 8 person hot tub. For the month of September my electric bill was $1600.00. I almost shit an eggroll.

I would throw up too! Our electric bills (usually) never run over $200 on the hottest months. We have a 2800 sq foot house and keep the air set at 70-73 degrees. We have 2 fridges, 1 chest freezer, but no pool.

Once, we had a gas bill in the winter that was $500/month. I threw a fit with the gas company. They were trying to charge us some bogus gas price, they lowered it to around $300. They have never messed with me again.

They have them here, do you have energy inspectors there; someone who specializes in this stuff that comes to your home and checks these problems out?
