We really have to change our National Anthem.

This country has become a land of pathetic, weak, spoiled brats who want the government to be their mommy and daddy for the rest of their lives, protecting and coddling them from the cradle to the grave.

We shame our founding fathers and the brave men and women who settled this nation.

If we're going to be perfectly honest, I think the new National Anthem should be "Someone To Watch Over Me."

Corporations got what they asked for, less restrictions, and what did they do? Drove themselves into bankruptcy and took us with them.

Quick fix to global and American problems, go back to old laws of regulating corporations. They were limited in length, had to serve only one purpose, not these multinational all encompassing monoliths that really control the world. Sorry to burst LordJezo's bubble that the UN is running a world government.

But, I am really not all that enamored with our founding fathers. It is not like they landed on the moon and turned it into a paradise. They landed on paradise, and with the help of the French, wrested control from the Brits. Good men, but not supermen

I agree to the most part, but the moves made here had to be done or we likely would have seen (still may) a depression like situation as led by Hoover and his decision at the turn of the century to let it work itself out. The very statement you made about coporations getting what they asked for SCREAMS insanity, but our gov is bought sold and delivered, and is only acting as it is now based on current outrage and voting patterns. If we're to truly get our old was of regulations and detached business from government (never really happened, but it has been better), we need term limits, a true third party and people to get fucking pissed like the Iranians. Even though we're getting raped in another way, Americans are too fat dumb and happy to get the fuck up and make a statement.

I am not talking about the Obama's policies. I am talking about allowing corporations to grow and either be free from regulation or basically write the regulation that "controls" them. All starting when a corporate purpose was allowed to expand beyond a single mission to where it is today; anything that is profitable.
All the "advances" that major corporations gave us, have only created new problems, or solved problems that they have created.

Ah, so the rights of the people willfully doing the proven harmful thing that very likely also harms the people around them trump those of the people choosing not engage in that harmful practice.

For better or for worse, our society has reached the point where transportation is a necessity. Smoking is no such necessity. Comparing smoking to the runoff from cars and such isn't a fair comparison at all.

Way to gloss over the key points of the debate. If smoking was just about people not liking the smell then it would have never gotten to this point. This comes down to an issue of a leisure practice being harmful to the people around the person engagaing in it.

Way to gloss over the key points of the debate. If smoking was just about people not liking the smell then it would have never gotten to this point. This comes down to an issue of a leisure practice being harmful to the people around the person engagaing in it.

unless you're trapped in a sealed room with a smoker for long periods of time, there is little chance of second hand smoke causing you any harm. in fact, with the air filtration systems that most bars had prior to smoking bans, the air you would breath inside a bar was cleaner than the air outside the bar!

but this goes way beyond smoking. smoking just happens to take all the heat because smoking is generally unhealthy (for the smoker), and there are very few politicians that would waste their time defending smokers due to the majority's disapproval of smoking (not to mention the kickbacks from insurance company lobbyists that they would no longer be able to line their pockets with).

beyond smoking, there are lots of worse sources of pollution than cigarettes. if breathing second hand smoke is so concerning, why isn't breathing exhaust from internal combustion engines? maybe we should ban fossil-fuel cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships. sure, the global economy and transportation network would grind to a sudden halt and human civilization as we know it would soon be destroyed, but that's a small price to pay to for clean air!

I already specifically mentioned this. Civilization as we know it relies on modern transportation. The pollution along with it is a necessary evil for the time being. Comparing that to cigarettes doesn't work because cigarettes are a totally unecessary luxury. It's a leisure activity. Nobody HAS to smoke. Shit, I love smoking, but I don't see why I NEED to do it out and about in businesses and eating establishments and so on.
