I was watching Marley and Me with the family
(The dog dies)

One of the topics in the movie was that the guy Luke Owen would sit in his driveway and not head straight in to house and home and family and all that it entails.
I also do this not in the driveway but on the way home often times giving myself a few minutes after work.
I'm sure its not unlike stopping at the local bar for a cold beer before heading home which I don't do.

So does anyone else grab a few minutes of me time before home and family?
Is this normal? ok ?

In case its unknown here I have been happily married for 23 years and have great kids so its not like heading into a buzzsaw at home that I'm avoiding.

Rhino and I went to this movie in the theater...and we talked about this same scene after the movie. Rhino told me this is why he doesn't come home right away after everyone leaves work. He sticks around for alone time before he has to deal with me and the kids.

I do this after I run errands alone. I usually sit in the van for a few minutes and turn the radio up really loud, although once, I forgot to put the car in park and I ended up hitting the garage door when I took my foot off the break.

Normal? Yes!

When my kids were small one of the highlights of my day was my ride to work after dropping them off at daycare. It was nice to have some time alone.

I prefer to sit in the driveway of his beach house. In fact I'm sitting there right now...... waiting for the beach bash.

I read the book before i saw the movie. I sat in the bathroom at 2 am finishing the last few chapters, bawling my eyes out.

When first married my wife would get pissed because I'd want to play a video game for 45 minutes to a hour after work and school before fully interacting with her. Of course when I got home I'd kiss her, eat with her, do the dishes, then I needed to unwind. I got so sick of her bullshit and me trying to explain it that I just started working longer hours and taking more courses. I burnt out after 3 years.

You (hopefully) learn from the military that everyone needs a little bit of downtime before re-engaging into life. My ex did not understand this and once she realized it, it was too late. She'd arrive home, do 2 shots of tequila (or whatever hard liquor), make her a strong mixed drink, then take everything out on me. How the fuck was I responsible for her shitty day at work? By her 2nd or 3rd drink I was just flat out ignoring her, even sleeping on the couch many times.

We as humans need to unwind and change gears per se. I think house wives/husbands know this better than the rest of us because of their daily tasks. This is followed by cops, medical professionals, firemen, etc or anyone with a high stress job. I could not imagine being a small business owner today and that kind of stress.

I tried to park in Joe's driveway and chill, but some mystical force pulled my car off the tarmac and into a tree.

Very well put. Now I am going home to see my wife.

I'm somewhat opposite of this. I work alone all day. I crave my saturday morning at the tavern in a card game with the old timers. I too love my family, but sometimes I need a bullshit session.

I love to do this too. I'm usually listening to parts of the day's replays on 202, or taking a cat nap. I walk in a happier girl, and when mama's happy...everybody's happy!

Ok by me.
I sat in the driveway this afternoon/evening and laffed my ass off to OnA Mumbles Menino bit - Mappens? Map Pins? Whetever. Jimmy is a quick-witted, fat-titted, genius. He makes that show these days. I needed to laugh.

Anyway, do what you want to do within martial reason. If you want to grab an hour here or there you should be able to.

Whenever I go home, I need a period of down time before I begin to interact. If I come home and get blasted with questions and conversation, I get really irritable. People who know me know its best to give me a little space when I walk in the door. I usually head right for the bathroom!

When I worked a real job the drive home was always decompression time.It takes a few to get your head out of "work gear" and into "I'm a real human with a family gear".I never sat in the driveway but I have been known to ride around the block or take a more circuitous route after a hard day.

Oh Jesus this sounds familiar. I walk in the door and I get swarmed by kids and all their questions and complaints. My wife is a stay at home mom and I work, but for some reason my wife seems to think that me walking in the door signals the end of her work day and the start of mine.
