View Full Version : do you use ac in the car

I always try to avoid using air conditioning in the car unless it's absolutely necessary. There's nothing more satisfying than driving around with all the windows down and the wind blowing in your face. Air conditioning is boring and wastes gas and I really only use it if Im going over 75 and keeping the windows down is impractical.

I think it all stems from the fact that my parents raised me and my siblings to keep the thermostat at 65 in the winter, the windows open in the summer and stop opening the refrigerator everytime we're hungry. I really feel guilty every time I turn on the ac

I try to keep it off too, but doing 65 in a pickup with the windows down is almost deafening.

My climate control is set to 68 or 70 all year round.

However, I'll put the windows down driving home at night once I get off the highway, if its a comfortable night.

You waste a lot more gas driving highway speeds with the windows down than you do running the AC.

Just sayin'.

If you have the a/c on doing 15 is deafening... nothing gives me douche chills more than a small car driving around with a loud ac fan going

AC vents can also be pointed up your shorts leg to cool down a sweaty ballbag!!!!

I will ride home in hot 80+ weather with windows up and the vents a blowing.

Saves me gas and doesnt rob my HP.

If it was my car only i would take the A/C compressor out.

Some of us don't live in the NE where you might be able to get away without it. It is always miserable hot and humid out here (in summer) in this dust-bowl. I can get away without using it in mornings most times though, but afternoons, fuggaboutit.

Help, someone please rescue me!

If it was legal, I'd weld steel plates over all the windows in the car, set the a/c to 60, and break the knob off.

I once put a remote starter in my car so I could have it nice and cool or warm depending on the season. A couple of weeks ago I left my 'big truck' running over 24 hours while I was home to keep everything cool in the 104 degree heat here in TX. I've ordered an aux power unit that will do th job only using 0.15 gal per hour instead of the 1± I'm using now.

mythbusters did an semi-scientific study.

2 cars, same year make and model. Filled the tank, and then drove, the car with the AC on only stopped like 1 mile or one lap behind the other.

I would imagine you might see a .25-1mpg drain using the ac, some have also argued that in cars with superior aerodynamics, you could actually lose MPG more with windows open, as it causes drag.

I have an older car with ac, and there is a 1mpg loss from using AC, in my new car i cannot tell the difference.

I use it, to make myself as comfortable as possible.

I dont care about the environment, I drive a tractor trailer that gets 4.5mpg, it idles all the time, and AC is ice cold. I also further pollute by driving the truck at 75mph everywhere I go, It usually runs 24/7 in the real cold of winter.

Running AC with your windows down doesn't do anything except.. Um. Nothing. The AC runs the same whether your windows or up or down. Maybe a tad more drag from the window down?

Turn the shit on high, roll down all the windows! Doesn't hurt your engine at all. Silly folklore.

Some cars DO have a thermostat. And, even they don't, you still have to run the AC higher with the window open. That doesn't bother me, though. I still have it open at least a few inches, if not all the way.

Just about any car made from the late 70s to now has a thermostat, it cycles the electromagnet clutch on your compressor. Most are preset for 65 if I recall correctly.

The first new car I bought was a Hyundai in 1986 when I was in grad school in Houston. It was $4995 and when I bought it the salesman asked me about a/c which was another $800 so I said no. He thought I was crazy but the old Dastun that I drove didn't have a/c either so I didn't miss it.

Currently I only use a/c when on the highway.

I use the air conditioner occasionally on the hottest days, but most of the time I just roll down the window.
The same is true with my house. I live out in the country in an old farm house that is surrounded by mature oak trees that are 60 or 80 feet tall. They shade the house almost all day so I can open the windows and let the breeze in and it is fine most of the time...
