Where is the line drawn...or is there no difference? Obviously the recent episodes with Billy Staples have brought this to light, but it's got me wondering. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, HK.

well there is no difference whether your a party animal or an alcholic, your still going to act like an ass and people are going to make a mockery of you which in turn destroys peoples perception of you.

Spuds McKenzie: Party Animal
Bartles and James: Alcoholics

Hope that clears things up. I thank you for your support.

Alcoholic: Drinks to get drunk
Party Animal: Drinks to help the coke come-down.

I get it. I get jokes.

I think the major difference is being able to control yourself - I have a friend who is a major party animal - but can control himself when necessary. It's all about control.

I once saw this definition:

The only difference between a drunk and an alcoholic is that alcoholics go to meetings.

alcoholics - people who constantly get bombed and make asses out of themselves, and always use the excueses "i was drunk, i didn't know what i was doing", "I don't remember cuz i was drunk" etc... they never take responsibility for their words or actions and expect those around them to babysit them, and they dont admit that they have a problem or did anything wrong

alcoholics have a dependency....you can drink yourself retarded every day and make an ass out of yourself every time...but as long as youre not physically or psychologically dependent on the alcohol, you're not an alcoholic, youre just a moron.

party animals like to party, alcoholics like to drink continuously even without the party atmosphere

ok so i lived with an alcoholic and here is what i think... this touches on some of what other people said... a party animal will drink with others that are drinking and having a good time..... an alcoholic will just drink by himself and not care and say things like i was bored so i thought i would get bombed.....

A party animal remembers the party, an alcoholic won't.

And Skid, it's always a party when you're around.

is there no difference?

There is a huge difference.

I truly think that many alcoholics hide behind the guise of being a "party animal".

The dependency on alcohol is the key.

Of course there is a difference.

What you refer to as a "party animal" is a social drinker. They usually maintain control over the quantity of alcohol consume particularly if they have to drive home. Drinking to them is just part of the night's festivities. There is no addiction to alcohol.

By contrast an alcoholic has severe phsycial, psychological and emotional dependancy on alcohol. He drinks not only to get drunk, but because he goes into withdrawal if he doesn't.

Remember that alcohol is a drug with far worse end results than many "illegal" substances. People use alcohol for many reasons that are familiar to users of other recreational drugs.
