Hey Dr. Steve.
I got a sunburn on my left leg about a month ago. It got very red but didn't bubble or even get as red as some people's sunburns I've seen. I had a nice line where the burn ended and the white skin began under my sock, very awful looking. I swore off shorts for like 2 weeks.
Problem is that I still see the burn line on my skin. It peeled a lot but it's still there. Faded but still there. What the hell can I do?
Just a heads up, I'm unemployed with no insurance so I need a home remedy if you can please.
Thank you,
Moe S.

Moe, they sell these big Aloe leaves in the supermarket by the fruits and vegetables. That is a classic home spun remedy thats cheap as hell. I also found that Benedryl liquid that you can pick up in CVS works for pain for that stuff. But your issue seems more like a skin issue with where the bun stopped by the sock line. If this burn was weeks ago, and since we havent really had much sun, I see no reason to abstain from shorts as long as you are not in direct sunlight. Try the aloe.

Moe:
A change in pigmentation can occur with even First degree burns. It's usually temporary; let the skin "turn over" (i.e., all the old skin eventually sloughs off, and new skin takes its place. Takes weeks to months) and see if it doesn't fade with time.
Just to get everyone on the same page:
1st degree: causes redness only, generally heals completely (possibly with some pigmentation change)
2nd Degree: blisters and redness, generally heals completely (possibly with some pigmentation change)
3rd degree: direct tissue damage/burning, heals with a scar.
Oh wait, crap, it's already BEEN weeks...let me know if it's better.
Sorry (again, everyone) for being so behind on these; I've been on vacation. I'm resolving to get in here and do a few every night until I have the inbox cleared out.

your pal,

PS: you can try vitamin E and all that stuff, but for now, the most inexpensive and probably just as effective way of dealing with this is to watch it.
