Just saw this on CNN. A helicopter carrying five Italian tourist collided with a small plane with three people aboard. The crash was described as "unsurvivable"

i don't think helicopters (or any aircraft below a certain altitude) have to file any flight plans.

There is no way they wouldn't be in the NY area having lived on the Hudson River coast in for 7 years. The traffic is constant with both plane and helicopters in many of the same areas. Often you'll see those small jets seemingly get WAY too low shooting down the Hudson bc it has some money passengers on board and they somehow are allowed to do so. I've all too often see some air traffic in this area get way too close to each other. Traffic copters, tv copters, police copters, small planes, tourist copters and plenty more are all over this area. So yah, I'm pretty sure they'd be either on the same system, or restricted to certain air cooridors. This may very well be a breakdown of one or the other.

I think we have a pilot or two on the board, chime in on this if you can.

Reports are coming in that an air traffic controller was responsible for the crash . Apparently he was still grieving over the loss of his oding bitch daughter.

Let me start off by saying I am full blooded Italian. There is a legend in my own family where a tragedy occurred after my grandfather went for a visit to Italy to see his family. The whole family crowded into a car to see him off at the airport and after he left and they were heading back, the car went off a cliff, killing everyone inside.
You never hear about a great fortune befalling a bunch of Italians. It is one of the reasons I am leery of family get togethers!
