As I started reading it seemed like another BS hater rant, but whether or not I want to admit it I agree with every single fucking word of it. It almost felt like an intervention for me as I read it, because while it was unpleasant, I couldn't disagree with it.

From day one Dave had great bits. While Ronnie B is the one who drives the show, without Dave there would have been very few truly memorable bits in the past few years.

Bothering David Blaine, Roberto, Earl's Grandmother, Dave's awful writing, Dave's protests, Davey Red, board gossip, Guy Guyerson, all the Dave vs. Earl stuff, Dave vs. Franklyn, Dave vs. Cream Pie Jones, Dave vs. Louis CK, Dave vs. Wackbag, Fucktwat the Clown, the Midnight Rider, Dave's shitty inventions, etc etc... There are too many to list quickly. The redheaded bastard's a radio genius, and really the main contributor to the show (outside of Ron, whose wit drives the show - goes without saying really).

Meanwhile what has Fez done? I think a shitty christmas song that was synced up all wrong and veeeeery occasionally he hits on all cylinders with the one liners. Ron made him do a written bit six months ago or so and it was really funny but I'll be damned if I can remember it. And I love the guy. And I feel for him. But Ron has tried every god damned trick in the book and it hasn't helped one whit. The one thing that may help would be to force Fez to WRITE BITS EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY. His improv hasn't been at the levels it used to be and this would force him to become more engaged in the show (and I think everything else would come back, like riding a bike)... but goddammit everyone's had suggestions for Fezzie and none of it has seemed to work.

As far as the conspiracy theories, all I can say is I'm a guy in Texas who doesn't know a single person who's a fan of the show that I didn't introduce the show to. And I only found it because I had XM. So I'm not part of a shadowy network. I don't know Dave or Casey and frankly I could give a shit about all of that behind-the-scenes shit. I just want the show to thrive because I love it.

Fezzie should pay Dave's child support because god damn Dave deserves co-hosting money at this point. He's been carrying plenty of weight for the last three years plus.

I feel like we've been a bunch of enablers and we've been avoiding the elephant in the room for too long. And while I wish we could bring this shit out in the open and have a frank discussion for the good of the show, I know you all will just hurl ad hominem attacks at me, lock the thread, and ban me.

Whether or not there's a grand conspiracy I can't say, but I doubt anyone is willing to commit federal crimes for the wife of a producer of a radio show. The whole idea is just fucking stupid. I appreciate you giving a different perspective on this rather than just jumping down my throat with hive mind knee jerk reactions. I actually love Special Delivery, so maybe that's just a matter of taste.

I know you've been on here a while because of your username, but don't you remember Fez before the heart attack? How can you say he's still the same guy? Yes he was brilliant, but for years now he's just been awkward and hand's off. At least that's how I see it. And like I said I love the guy. I just can't imagine any definition of co-host that would describe his current level of participation in the show.

I remember Fezzie from when he was but a 3rd mic, often stealing the show not by virtue of stunts, even though he's always done that - but by "being Fez." He was a different incarnation of Fez when he became a co-host, and different a decade ago than now, but the essential "Fez" remained through all the changes. Fez has never been about word count - more the well-placed or well-delivered line, along with occasional stunts like the most recent Buffalo Bill dance.

Criticisms like "doesn't know about music or film" are odd, because not only has Fez never known about those but it has always been part of his "charm." Fez knows football, wrestling, comics among other Fez topics, and that has never been a problem nor is it now just because someone is around who is somewhat more conversant on other run of the mill topics. (Four Winds is more interesting than Radiohead.)

I don't think anyone including Fez would argue that he had a rough several months during his breakdown and heart attacks, but for months now I've heard Fez back on his game, nearing 100% lately. (Part of the reason is Ron's intervention which mainly amounts to shutting down Dave more frequently so Fez can talk).

For reasons hashed and rehashed here, the fact that he was coming back strong seemed to intensify criticism from certain quarters.

And yes, Fez is just as replaceable as anyone else on the show not named Ron. As long as Ron Bennington was on the show, Fez could quit tomorrow and it wouldnt effect my love of the show even the tiniest bit. And Id bet a stck of cash the same thing can be said for about 95% of the listening audience.

I understand when Fez is quiet when they're talking about movies and music and such. But I don't understand why he can't come up with a fezatorial or a catty moment every couple of weeks. We'd go crazy for it. Drop a nature boy in. Say rude and rude one a week. Hell thats enough for me.

hi helter, i agree with all you wrote and most of what that quote said. i think a couple things are happening here. one is there are a lot of dedicated fans that don't like reading criticism-in fact they think it's antithetical to being a 'fan'. another is that certain criticisms, however valid or well stated, have become repetitious here, and you can read in the responses to this thread how some people respond to boredom. they make me think of a southern bar throwing bottles at the musicians behind the fence at times. another aspect is that many here see the kernel of truth in these statements but genuinely think that posting of them here worsens the situation. and finally, there are trolls who are personas or rablerousers that only care about creating a digital fracas.

now in my time surfing the web, i will say that save for the top 1% posters, 'good bye' threads are never well received.

i think that written bit you refer to was the fezzie mccool segment about his cat skippy. needless to say i listened to that one with a lot of pleasure and later played it for family visiting at christmas. i'd love to hear fez write more bits, add a little production and establish a regular theater of the mind segment.
