I have several friends from high school in Biloxi, MS that either are the product of biracial parents or are in a biracial marriage themselves. It's the myth that racism is worse in the south than anywhere else in the world is what pisses off people like me. Nobody I know is more interested in where you're from and what race or nationality you are than the people I've met from New York City.

I believe it was on PBS. Believe it or not this region of the country produces a huge share of the marijuana crop every year and according to this documentary they aren't afraid to hurt the police. The Park police routinely find bombs and get caught on fish hooks as they search out the fields.

I have spent many miles and years riding the roads in Clay Co, KY and in the area around Manchester - it is very rural. Coming out of Hazzard, it is a 30 or so mile ride that goes through the Daniel Boone forest all the way.
The culture over there in East KY is amazing to me - the people are generally very private and very territorial. A lot are on prescript drugs and selling as well. I bought coal from small private dog hole mining companies and I was very cautious where I travelled. Once, I went inside a house to iron out a deal for 500,000 tons of coal and I sat down on this nasty ass couch. Didnt notice until after setting down that I almost sat on a chicken. Damn thing squalked and I yelled GD very loudly. The guys mom came in from the kitchen and condemmed her son to deal with anyone that would take God's name in vain. So, I left with nothing. Crazy part of the world - dosent shock me to find someone strung up in a tree.

It's not a stretch at all to question whether or not the very public and very angry protestations against the census by politicians and prominant media figures had an impact on this event occuring. It's not like we're talking about a very common type of murder here. Given its unusual and singular nature and the timing in the wake of people talking like the census (of all things) is potentially this dangerous or invasive "boogeyman" it's not ridiculous to think that there could be a connection.
