MPW For Charity?

I kind of came around on the Most Post Wins thread. MPW did allowed people to talk about everything and nothing if they so choose, and I know that some people became close friends because of that thread. It wasn't entirely positive -- I don't think it needed it much, but because of sheer volume, it was pretty difficult to moderate. Also, at times it became completely unreadable (I'm looking at you, Paul O). I guess it also allowed people to "artificially" enhance their post counts, but no one worth their salt gives a shit about post counts.

Ultimately, while a board does need rules governing behavior (i.e. no spam, no personal attacks, etc.), the board's members should have some say in what kind of content that it wants, provided that it doesn't infringe on others' use of the board. For the most part, MPW was hated by many, but because it was contained in a single thread, it was pretty easy to ignore if you wanted to. (Yes, if you were using iSpy, it wasn't quite as easy to ignore MPW, especially when it got going, but more about that later.)

So, MPW still has a stigma, and many on the board will continue to hate it. It occurred to me that this could be at least partly remedied by making a new MPW thread a positive thing. My proposal is to start a new MPW thread, but make this one for charity. How it would work would be like this -- every post in MPW would cost you a penny, payable by Paypal at the time when the thread was to officially close. 500 posts would cost you $5. 5,000 posts would cost you $50. People would be encouraged (but not required) to round up to the next dollar amount so that low post count posters would not be stuck donating only 11 or 12 cents. A penny might not sound like much, but if the thread blew up to 50K posts, that would be $500 ronfez.net would be able to give to a charity. We could also go for 2 cents a post if people preferred that. You could still have the silly prizes for most number of posts, hitting different numerical milestones, etc. too.

The only other thing is that, if possible, if we could keep the new thread out of iSpy so as not to muck that up for those who choose not to participate.

Anyway, this is just a thought. I'm no longer in charge, so it's not something I can or would try to force through. I'm just curious as to whether people think this is a good idea. Beyond that if people do like the idea, does anyone have suggestions for charities?

people that commit to the cause could be granted access to a sub forum, much like the admin forums. That way only people with access to it could still see it in iSpy while others wont be bothered by the thread. It's a little bit of an mod effort to get started but as far as paying up in the end it will have to be an honor system, and who would run and not pay if they publicly committed to doing so

My thoughts exactly. Some people probably won't pay for one reason for another, but that's life. This shouldn't turn into a headache where someone has to pester someone to Paypal their $1.27.

I think it's pretty simple. If we decide to do this, we create a thread titled "Most Post Wins for Charity (READ FIRST POST IN THREAD BEFORE POSTING!!!)". Then the first post will lay out the ground rules and state the charity benefiting. At the end, everyone who posted in the thread would get a PM letting them know what they owe and where to send it.

I think this is the best way to decide the charity. It will give RF.Net a chance of redemption and possibly gain back the favor of the boys. Twitter is mostly boring.
