LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley declared that all medical marijuana dispensaries in his jurisdiction, including some 800 in the city of Los Angeles, are illegal and will be prosecuted.
Voters in California legalized the medical use and sale of marijuana to patients with doctors' prescriptions, but Cooley and new City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said Thursday that a state Supreme Court opinion issued last year makes pretty much all dispensaries in the state illegal because they sell the drug over-the-counter instead of via highly regulated pharmacies.
Cooley said his office was already making legal moves against Culver City outlet Organica. The new stance toward dispensaries sent a chill through the medical marijuana community.
Outside Montebello Country Club, where the two officials made the anti-dispensary announcement, about 100 medical marijuana advocates protested.
"If this is the way it goes, we'll go underground again," said Barry Kramer, operator of Melrose Avenue dispensary California Patient Alliance. "There will be a lot more crime."

Um, do you think it's the progressives that are trying to ban pot?

Progressives agree that pot should be legalized. Some argue that what one does with their own body is their business. Of course, there are those out there who want to tie health care reform with punishment for those who consume fast food and soda.
Republicans are the ones who have this War on Drugs, want to throw every kid in jail who has a gram of trees on them, want to continue to fight Columbian drug lords and Afghan poppy farmers. Then again, I'm sure if they ever got a majority again, they'd ban dancing and drinking just to appease their religious base.
It's a sham, especially with people like Rush Limbaugh who is all about punishing the drug dealers and users, but he himself is ok because he was just scamming and taking large quantities of legal opiate derivatives.

I am at a total lack of understanding as to why anyone would care that some people light a plant and breathe in its smoke.

Lets see
Its reason for war mongers to feed the war machine (invade countries).
There must be taxes or some shit to bust folks off the street. For something as little as a roach, seeds, or even residue in a pipe.
Don't take pot or you will end up like this.

This isn't a liberal or conservative thing. The California Supreme Court made a ruling and DA's can't just ignore them. And it's not even that medical marijuana can't be sold, it's just that it can't be sold OTC.

Exactly. The current state of semi-legal pot is a joke. Recently in my home town, a dispensary was robbed by men with shotguns. I decided to go to the dispensary's website, which has instructions to it's clientèle to refuse to talk to police officers unless under arrest. Ironically, the local paper had a picture of the manager speaking to the cops investigating the crime against them. More legal advice from the website:
"Don’t Consent to a Search!
If the cops say: “Do you mind if I look in your purse, bag, home, or car?”
You say: “I do not consent to a search.”
When cops say: “Why not? Are you hiding something?”
You say: “I believe in my Constitutional right to privacy and I do not consent to a search.”
Note: this probably will not stop an officer from searching you, but it can help get any evidence thrown out in court."
Notice the part I put in bold, which literally says that most likely, a police officer will violate your civil rights. Real professional.
The website also has this concise medical advice to offer:
"It is difficult to know how strong an edible medicine will be, and because it can take an hour or more to feel the full effects, it is easy to over-medicate. Use caution! If you have taken your medicine in an edible form, wait at least an hour to be sure you know how strongly it will affect you before taking more."
It sounds so scientific. They also have weekly events where you spin the "Wheel of Fortuna" for a prize.
In our area, we also have had multiple incidents where people who are legally growing their 30 plants or less get robbed at gunpoint for their plants. We just had several men get arrested after doing this dressed as DEA agents. I recently went on a call regarding four pit bulls running at large in a neighborhood. The owners of the dogs was growing 400 plants in his backyard, in plain view. His 215 card allows no more than 30. 400 plants for personal medicinal use? The kid that was growing the plants was just some hippy type who was obviously growing for distribution, which is one thing. But the other thing is that when that many plants are being grown in a neighborhood where there are plenty of kids, it becomes dangerous when the violent criminals show up with their arsenal to "harvest" the plants. I would think that people who are on the fence about legalization would tend to vote against it when they see what's happening.
The point I am trying to make is that the current state of semi-legal pot under dubious conditions of medical use is being thoroughly abused to the detriment of society. I personally wish that it was totally legal, and hopefully this will happen eventually. But the way things are happening now, I feel like that possibility may suffer a backlash from the increased crime and unprofessional conduct of the dispensaries.

i thought i always heard you needed a scrip to get medical marijuana. never had any clue they sold it otc. i just always assumed that would be illegal with their current laws. sounds like a non-story, just go to a doctor and you're still fine.
