What did you plan on doing with your life?

Has it panned out?

How has it changed?

Is it for better or for worse?

Why?

When I was 18 years old I discovered the joy of playing music. I dropped out of college and formed a band.

My parents were beside themselves, and my mother asked "what are you going to do with your life without a college education?"

I said that if I had to work a shitty job Monday through Friday I wouldn't care, as long as I got to play guitar on the weekends, even if it was in a dive bar.

25 years later I still feel the same way.

I wanted to live in maine or alaska. I also wanted to be a freebird, and live by my own rules.
None of that panned out. Nor will it. And, I'm ok with that.

I've had no path. It's worked out pretty well so far.

I had a professor spark a passion for China that has pretty guided me since I was 17. I have lived in China, worked in radio in Taiwan, studied Chinese, worked as a China intelligence analyst for the government, Mandarin linguist & intelligence officer in Army. It has taken some odd turns but my path has been China.

all of this was because of one excellent professor. this guy has no clue that he is easily one of the most influential people in my life.

Ten Years Gone
Though the course may change sometimes,
Rivers always reach the sea.

I think my "path" has been more of an idea. Nothing solid, just the over all goal of being happy in whatever I'm doing.

So far that seems to be working out well for me.

I am not too far off the path I planned in the 80s and 90s. College, Army, clinical research, this temporary retirement with a plan to start a new career, and helping others.

The nurse thing did not pan out but health care field did and the Army was cut short but such is life.

I have always wanted to be a writer. after many stops and starts with fiction, I found a foothold in writing about music. I am happy, but will be happier when i can live off of my writing.

Send the guy a note and tell him that. Teachers don't get paid nearly enough and that may be more reward to him than a paycheck could ever be.

Cool gigs by the way!

My life has been a series of strange twists and turns. It's not exactly what I wanted but it's turned out all right so far. Still, if I could go back and do things differently, I might change a thing or two.

At 18 I was thrown out of my house by my stepfather. I spent my nights sleeping in a HS Baseball dugout and spent my days lounging on the beach, eating a loaf of bread and some cheese over the course of a week. Winter came and I found a couch to sleep on up in Kingston, NY a season or two later I hit the road again. From there I drifted up to Maine where I lived in a one room cabin for a few seasons, then down to Rhode Island for a spell. Back down to NY a few years later, went to college in order to gain steady living quarters - I used selections from my years of writing to get in. Finished undergrad, went on to grad school which is where I'm at now. During all that I managed to get married and settled down.

I didn't have a plan - Thankfully I was thrown out of the house.

In high school we had to write an essay on how we wanted our future to unfold. I wish I could find it to remember everything I had written. I wanted to go to college get a masters degree something in the business field. I either wanted to be a CEO or CFO of a company or start my own business. I didn't want to get married until I was 30 and possibly not have kids and if I did it would have been well into my 30's. I wanted to travel all over the world.

Instead I got engaged at 19, married at 21, had my first child at 23, became a stay at home mom, had my 2nd child at 28, work part time at a kid's clothing store, and only have 2 years of college under my belt. (My high school business teacher was pissed and did not fail to mention how disappointed she was that I didn't make something better of my life.)

Happy? Yes! Satisfied? Not always. I believe I still have many years and lots of twists and turns still in my path. I am not worried as long as I am always happy.

I just try to be a good person and not harsh anyone else's buzz. I thought I wanted to be a nurse growing up, quit the nursing program my senior year (I did not want to become the cold person. My parents were actually very happy about it.). Since I worked as a Dental Assistant for my Dentist since I was 19 (I've known him since I was 5) I became really interested in the profession. My boss encouraged me to go to Dental Hygiene school. So I went back for a few classes in order to get all my prerequisites, then went to DH school. Graduated in the top 5 of my class, and I had one of the top grades in the nation on my National Boards. At the same time I worked a full time job and cared for two dying parents. I look back now and cannot believe I managed to do it all. I subsisted on caffeine, nicotine, and stacker two (I do not recommend this combination). I could not be happier with my choice of profession.
