Dearest Dr. Steve,

This Friday (10/23/09) I will undergo a cystoscopy. The doctor plans on knocking me out for this procedure.

My question: How much discomfort should I expect after it is all said and done? How long will I feel this discomfort?

I ask because I also happen to have tickets to see Jim Norton that very night.

Thanks in advance.

John

Ooops! well, I guess you already figured out the answer: little to none. The anesthesia may have screwed up your memory for a few hours...hope you remember seeing Li'l Jimmy!

I did my last colonoscopy without anesthesia; after it was over, I blasted out some titanic farts, pulled up my pants, and went to work.

Hope yours went ok.

I'm meeting with the GI next week for the consult before my colonoscopy and want to ask about having it done without anything to knock me out or memory blockers (although fentanyl is a fun drug). I want to go this route out of no other reason then curiosity. A much as possible I've liked to have been cognizant of whats going on during a procedure since I'm interested in what they're doing. Will the doc think I'm a lunatic (or perv) for wanting to go without any anaesthetic?

I wouldn't think so, a substantial fraction of people will do it this way. I blogged about my experience here: http://www.doctorsteve.com/2008/01/17/reader-question-the-dreaded-colonoscopy/

let me know if it helps. I can't say I exactly "recommend" doing it without anesthesia. The discomfort was nothing to sneeze at, but when it was over, it was over. I yanked up my drawers and went to go see patients.

LOL, I've read your blog and loved the descriptive play by play.

Given the substantial post procedure flatus I might decide to take the afternoon off as I don't want to be with a customer trying to get them to spend a couple hundred grand then spontaneously turn into a human whoopee cushion.

ha ha! It really only takes about 5 minutes to express it all. It's an amazing 5 minutes, but after that you're pretty much good to go. Your call, of course. :-) good luck and let me know how it goes!

Damnit!!! I was hoping I'd be a machine for the rest of the day. There are a few people I'd like to.....ummmmm......errrrrrr.........share with.

I'll ask the doc if I can bring in a camera. If he says yes I'll post the results on R&F.
