It'd be a lot easier to listen to if they just said that these are thing they personally like instead of portraying the shows as a retrospective of the decade...where to begin:

1) Ron saying essentially that Roger Federer doesn't matter for athlete of the decade because "all of our best athletes don't play sports like that" is ridiculous...the entire WORLD plays and focuses most on sports like Tennis, Soccer, Swimming, Track & Field, etc...this guy is arguably the greatest Tennis player of all time and has dominated an extremely competitive decade of tennis playing....the argument gets even more aggravating when he dismisses Dave picking Federer and then picks a fucking GOLFER...it's a skill, not a sport.

2) Dave, did you even watch Rome? How the hell can you say that's the worst TV show of the decade because "there's no action"?? It's one of the most violent shows HBO has ever produced! The arena episode....the Battle of Phillipi...the murder of Caesar....Antony sliting Pompey's son's throat in the street.....Pullo's execution of Cicero...again, did you even watch the show?

3) While I agree that Fez's music picks made me queasy, if you're doing a retrospective of the decade, how the hell can you not acknowledge the fact that the merger of reality TV with the record industry (along with Disney essentially investing in pop acts) is exactly why pop music was so shitty for this entire decade and is essentially the driving force of the record industry these days.

4) Saying the Lakers are the team of the decade simply because they won the most championships is way too simplistic....first off, do they even give consideration to sustained success? The Yankees made the playoffs in the hardest sport to make the playoffs 9 of 10 years...the Patriots won something like 7 division titles and had a ridiculous winning percentage for the decade...

5) I know that Ron hates fantasy movies, for the most part, but again, how can you do a retrospective of the decade in movies and not mention Lord of the Rings once in the entire hour?

Basically you're saying that R&F are wrong in airing these because you're hearing opinions that differ than yours.

That's silly.

Any show of this sort (or magazine feature) is going to be based on individual opinions. Yes, bigger magazines will be more of a consensus because they'll be polling all of their writers. But are the lists in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, or Mojo - or shows on E!, VH1, or Fuse - any more satisfying? I've been enjoying listening to the things that the staff on the show like or dislike...even if I don't agree at all. So Dave hated a show that you liked, or you don't agree with Ron's assessment of Roger Federer? That goes along with the territory.

I'm not saying they're wrong in what they're doing...I'm just saying their opinions are aggravating.

Some in terms of excluding things from discussion of the topic (i.e. not mentioning LOTR in the movie discussion), some just for their insanity (i.e. Dave on Rome).

It's not even a thing of "my opinion's not represented," or "things I like got trashed" (although, I'm sure it'll read like that to everyone at first glance)

The arguments are just aggravating. Federer's not a legit athlete because the best athletes in this country play football and baseball, but yet they pick Tiger Woods two minutes later?

Someone trashes a show based on lack of violence, when the show is inherently violent if anyone's ever watched it....some of it just made no sense.

Obviously, they're entitled to do whatever they want, and they're not any different than every other outlet doing this shit. But at the same time, I want to discuss why I think the shows have been aggravating.

Isn't that pretty much how the show works? I would never have considered LOTR for a movie of the decade and I doubt it would have even come up for me. I am just glad there is new content during their vacation.

I understand your point KC. I found the television discussion very frustrating. I understand having a difference of opinion. Dave's Rome bashing was just bizarre. It's like he watched a different show than the rest of us.

I was so shocked that someone actually watched the Wire. Ron bashes television all day long as being garbage, but he doesn't take the time to actually watch a lot of the better shows. Thankfully Pepper acknowledged it, although Office as the worst show was ridiculous, as Ron argued.

However I was SHOCKED when Ron picked Eternal Sunshine as his top movie. I have barely heard him mention this movie. I have no problem with his pick though. It might be my favorite movie of all time, but it's so stressing to watch that I can't watch it that often.

There were other frustrating moments, but I try not to get too wrapped up in it. It actually happens to me more during the news stories. They can't seem to be bothered to get basic facts about the topics they are discussing correct, and then they argue their positions on lack of facts. Still, I love the show.

I don't really watch movies or sports so those are out for me. The only thing that made me rage was Ron blowing off Dexter, I raaaaggggeeed.

Really? First of all he said 85% of people own an Ipod. That's higher than the percentage of people that own a computer. Sadly, I doubt he was using IPod as a generic for MP3 player either. He was woefully misinformed when it comes to technology.

Also, the Iphone was not the first phone to have internet capabilities and wasn't "copied" by Blackberry. The touchscreen was made really mainstream by Apple, but Smartphones weren't invented by Apple.

Hmmm. Maybe not as misinformed as you think.
Dave is a long distance commuter. (as am I)

When you spend 5 hours a day on buses and trains and subways, you tend to see a fuck of a lot of Ipods and mp3 players. You're surrounded by people who have them. I've noticed it.

He's definitely wrong to say that 85 percent of people have iPods but... in his world... that's accurate. And maybe even a little low. Again... I'm not saying he's right, but I am saying that he didn't just randomly feel like getting some mic time about this. Almost every seat is occupied with some form of handheld headphone music player.

The plural of anecdote is not data. The number in this country as of the latest statistics I could find, was 20% of people own a portable mp3 player. That's portable mp3 player, not even the 85% Ipod ownership he was touting. So I don't think his 85% number was "a little low."

Whether he says these crazy things for mic time, or because he's just that uninformed is up to how you want to listen to it. I cannot imagine a person could honestly say to themselves they believe in global warming because they don't get ice skates from their mom anymore.

Still loving the best of's though. Listening to the news one as I type this.

fezident

Yes. I get what you're saying.

What I'M saying is, Dave was actually saying something that he felt (knew) to be true.

I was recently on a train, and there was a mechanical problem. We sat at a station for about 8 minutes... and then an announcement came over the PA telling everyone to get off this train, and walk across the platform to another train. Almost nobody got up. Almost nobody heard the announcement. Literally... maybe 5 people weren't wearing headphones. Eventually... people had to start tapping people on the shoulder and mouth the words "get off the train" to us.

If I were Dave... and then I finally got to my job and see the janitor (facilities!) and my coworkers with iPods.... yeah... I might think that number is higher than 20 percent. Oh, and the one guy who doesn't have one is an antisocial weirdo who is woefully behind the times when it comes to technology and social skills.

You are correct that Dave didn't do even one minute of research before spouting his statistics. But, what I'm saying is, he didn't feel like he was saying anything outlandish. I mean... he DID say "take a look around you on the street and on the subway, everybody is listening to an ipod". I knew what he meant.

spainlinx0
12-31-2009, 06:09 AM
Again I say to you, the plural of anecdote is not data. You're saying the one guy who doesn't have it is the antisocial weirdo, when 4 out of 5 people don't have one.

I also find it bizarre that the people who don't walk around in their own worlds with headphones on are the antisocial ones. Seems a little ass backwards there.

That is the problem when people assume things. Experiences aren't universal. You can tell all your stories you want, but the fact is he made up facts, AS USUAL, and it just can get a little annoying sometimes. I love the guy, and think he's funny, but if he wants to grow as a broadcaster he may want to do a little research. I know it's easier to spout off at the mouth, but usually people try to do some basic fact checking.

fezident
12-31-2009, 06:44 AM
Really, dude?
Really?

I am saying that, in this show about OPINIONS, Dave's is not without merit. Nobody was pretending or claiming to have done any fact-checking.
The whole concept of the show was to express their opinion. Dave then mentioned his opinon... and even stated why/how he arrived at that opinion. He mentioned, quite clearly, that on HIS commute from NJ to NYC that he sees an shhhhitload of ipods (or at least, some type of portable headphone player). Apple has sold 210 million ipods. That's data. Apple has sold, literally, billions of songs. That's data.

Dave saying "everyone has an iPod" is like saying "everyone likes pizza". He's right. Everyone does like pizza. Not ev-er-y-one but, we all know what the point is. It's fuckin' popular.

Dave might've overstated his point, but... the point he's making is a valid one.

If you were playing Family Feud, and the question was "name a popular device invented sometime in the last ten years", you would almost have to answer "iPod".
Or you could try your luck and say "the plural of anecdote is not data" and hope that it's up there.

You can. Just don't say "plural of anecdote".

In case you haven't noticed, Dave is not stuntman anymore. He's an intelligent guy who has a lot of good opinions and knowledge to add to the show. Ron goes to him to be a contributor to the conversation. It's frustrating when he backs himself into a corner, then lies or aggressively backpeddles his way out of it.

And why does expecting someone in a conversation to be factually correct make you a "black hole of fun"? THE PLURAL OF ANECDOTE IS NOT DATA!!!!!!@#$

I think the show is great. I love it. When Ron's giving a great interview do you think the show is a comedy show that shouldn't be taken seriously?

Ron and Fez definitely go beyond being a typical comedy show. Ask Dave if he wants to just be considered a joke that we should never take seriously. Do you think that's his intent? The show has different aspects to it. If Dave is playing Dave Leno I won't question the validity of his points, but while he's in a grown up conversation I"d prefer if he didn't waste everyones time with idiotic hyperbole's.

Edit: and I want to add, I freakin love Dave!!! I think he's a brilliant guy.

That was my point. If I'm not supposed to take it seriously, maybe he should have made a joke at some point during that discussion. That was not a "comedy" segment. It was a discussion of most important technology. I disagree with his assessments, and I stated why. Sorry I used a phrase too many times for the rest of you, but the point is personal experiences do not make a fact correct.

In other words, the plural of anecdote is not data.

The best retort to the statement, "The plural of anecdote is not data," is, "And the plural of 'datum' is not 'proof'!"

This is booger-eating level geekdom.

And if you read that entire article, including the conclusion, you would have seen that while arguing the admitted cliche I was using, it also acknowledges that where data exists, as in studies showing ownership levels, anecdotes don't refute that. But, then again, I'll leave it alone from this point on because any type of discussion on this board that could veer into negative territory brings in the rabid posters who can't stand dissent. Nevermind that I have been listening to the show since 2001, listen to every show daily, and am even relistening to to WJFK shows when I run out of new Ron and Fez. I must not really be a fan because I disagree with a sentiment ESD shared and discussed why.

I'll stick to just shouting something sucks, then running away from any discussion. That's obviously the only way to enjoy posting on this shell of a board.
