was anyone else at Red Bull Arena yesterday for the tournament? Got to see Red Bulls (with Henry), Tottenham Hotspurs, Manchester City, and Sporting Lisbon. The level of play wasn't that high due to it being an exhibition match, but it was still great to see some of the big name EPL players on our turf (no Tevez, Crouch, Defoe, or Lennon, unfortunately). I was a little surprised to see that Adebayor was getting a lot of boos from the crowd. I was pretty excited to see the big man. Anyway, it was a good time. The highlight was probably the supporters chanting "FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE" whenever the opposition goalie made a goal kick. True New York style.

Diego Maradona...FIRED
The Argentine Football Association said Tuesday it would not renew his contract. The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract through the 2014 World Cup, but Maradona said he would do so only if his entire staff remained.
That was unacceptable to Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona. He had asked for several assistants to be replaced. One of them was Maradona's close friend Alejandro Mancuso. The federation said its executive committee unanimously decided to not keep Mardona.
That crazy fatass cokehead did a much better job than I thought he would at the World Cup.
Whoever gets the new job is going to have to shit in a regular old fashioned toilet, unfortunately.

Being 4th in the championship isn't really competing. Compared to what they were in the 70s, this is like the Oakland Athletics playing in AAA and being sort of OK.

Possibly. But realistically, they are a brand, they make a lot of money. they were horribly mismanaged in recent years. They still have a crappy chairman, but they can still generate enough cash to be far better than anyone in The Championship.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is getting ripped for saying that gay people should butch it up for a while if they go to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Today, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association and other gay rights activists are condemning his words — and renewing their objection to having the tournament played in a country where homosexual behavior is illegal.
CNN has posted video of Blatter answering a question concerning whether homosexual fans should be worried about having the World Cup held in Qatar. As you'll see, after the comment about refraining from sex, he goes on at length to make the case that while "in football we have no boundaries," Qatar is home to "another culture because it is another religion."
But, Blatter also says, if homosexual fans "want to watch a match somewhere in Qatar in 2022, I'm sure they will be admitted to such matches."
John Amaechi, a former NBA player who came out in 2007, says that through Blatter's comments "FIFA has endorsed the marginalization of LGBT people around the world."
Nice job, FIFA. You put the World Cup in a desert hellhole that doesn't have the facilities for it yet, and now you tell people that they have to conform to this place's ass-backwards social norms when you go there. Hey, look, Qatar, if you agree to host something like this, you have to be willing to accept that people who don't quite agree with you on everything will show up for it.
Hope those bribes you got were worth it.

Sepp Blatter has a cunning plan for the 2022 World Cup: play it in winter.
FIFA's top officials left open the option of rescheduling the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to avoid the blistering summer.
Any decision would require extensive talks with soccer federations and other overseers of the sport, they said Thursday.
In separate remarks, FIFA president Sepp Blatter and general secretary Jerome Valcke said moving the Qatar matches to winter deserves study. It could protect players from heat and show flexibility for future bid cities.
"FIFA's job is to have a World Cup that protects the players so we take note of the recommendations and go through the list of requirements," Blatter told journalists in Qatar in his first visit since the tiny Gulf nation was awarded the World Cup this month. "We will look into this and make the right decision."
This, of course, would play havoc with the schedules of most of the top associations in soccer.
And weren't we told that the 120+ degree temperatures in Qatar in summer wouldn't be an issue because they'd air condition the field, or some shit like that?
Jesus, Blatter has to go.

In a match that's just so uniquely British, today's FA Cup action sees mighty Manchester United taking on fifth-tier Crawley. How different are these teams?
United, a world power with three European titles and famous players such as Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, has a four-point lead in the Premier League as it tries for a record 19th English title.
Crawley has never played above the fifth tier of English soccer and, until this year, struggled to attract crowds of more than 500 to its non-league matches.
The tiny southeast club would become a household name if it wins Saturday at Old Trafford.
"It's a dream come true for the club,'' Crawley chairman Victor Marley told The Associated Press. "The opportunity to perform in front of 75,000 people is something that every player, every manager aspires to do. It's also a fantastic moment for the people of Crawley, to go and see their team play the future champions of England. It's what any non-league club would ever have wished or hoped for.''
Crawley became only the sixth non-league team since the end of World War II - and the first in 17 years - to reach this stage in the FA Cup after beating league clubs Swindon, Derby and Torquay.
It stands to receive "in excess of 1 million pounds ($1.6 million),'' according to Marley, in gate receipts, television revenue and other add-ons from the United match.

I was trying to figure out how this would work out in American sports terms. If you look at baseball's league structure, the fifth tier would be full-season Class A leagues like the South Atlantic League and Midwest League. So it would be like the New York Yankees playing the Augusta Green Jackets or something like that.
Except even that doesn't really work, because a class A team is made up of rookies on their way up the ladder, and Crawley seems to be made up of more veteran players who just aren't good enough to play any higher. So it's probably more like some independent minor league team than that.

I guess the closest we could compare to would be if an NFL team played a team from the CFL or XFL, if that league was still around.

Mexico's chances of repeating as Gold Cup champions just got a lot slimmer.
Starting goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and four teammates were removed from the Mexican national team on Thursday afternoon after positive drug tests for the substance "Clenbuterol", a banned stimulant that can be used to ease the symptoms of chronic breathing disorders.
The following players Francisco Javier Rodriguez, Antonio "Sinha" Naelson, Christian Bermudez, Edgar Duenas, and Ochoa face a suspension of up to a year depending on whether or not the positive drug tests were not accidential. In a press conference, the Mexican Football Federation speculated that the players consumed chicken that was tainted with the drug and will request replacements to CONCACAF. The removals come just one day after defender Ricardo Osorio also left the team due to an injury.
The removals have major ramifications for El Tri, who lose their starting goalkeeper as well as several key players at the start of the Gold Cup.

It's not that, MLS could easily not schedule games during these times, but they decide to go on. It ends up hurting them because some teams lose their best players. The Galaxy have enough star power that losing Landon Donovan may not hurt as much, but a team like NYRB are missing a key scorer in Dwayne DeRosario and a great guy to come off the bench in Juan Agudelo.

Tonight's Cuba vs. Mexico match could be a mess. Mexico have 5 players suspended and now comes word that 7 Cuban's have defected, possibly leaving them with only 11 available for tonight.
I wonder if any goalies have defected?

Why does Cuba even bother having a team? The qualify for this tournament again and again players defect.

Defection rumors appear to be false as Cuba have players on the bench.
The defections will happen eventually, they always do in this tournament.

Is there a reason as to why Mexico doesn't get full hosting rights? I mean, they did host the World Cup in 1990, so if they're good enough for that, surely, they have the capabilities to host a tournament at a much smaller level.

It has worked 2 games in a room, so I can't complain. Bradley has made good substitutions lately. Freddy Adu came out of nowhere. I would have figured Edu to come in. As far as the 4-5-1, I believe it allows more players in the midfield to help control the ball. It's a different look, which is why we dominated Jamaica. They didn't expect that formation and it took away their speed.

Ok, I'll admit that he's made some timely substitutions, and made adjustments that have "worked", but it's infuriating to watch this team come out flat almost every f'ing game.
How many times in the last WC did they have to play from behind?
And it's still happening.
I just question the strategy of playing conservative against a team like Panama, on our home turf for Christ's sake, and hoping to spark a late goal with Adu and Donovan in the second half.
And, yeah, I realize this is a "mini cup gimmick", but I fucking despise Mexico, and would hate to get embarrassed on Saturday.

Or they just aren't the better team and were out coached again. I didn't watch much, but what little I did seemed to show a team being out paced and clearly out of order on D. It seemed they were too slow and dumb to play against the Mexicans once they got a 2-0 lead, and never seemed to adjust to a 2-0 game which is usually easy in soccer to hold on. I may be wrong, but man did the game just open up even more and the US seemingly didn't make any true situational adjustment in game.
And yes, I was bored and actually watched more then I let on after my Jays finished off the Cards since everyone here was into it. I truly root for the other team too. It's not a joke. I want soccer to forever be the sport we BLOW at versus most of the world. I love it.

HATE it in mlb too, like that hr enders where they have coordinated stuff and like WF mentioned in another thread when they go CRAZY for minutes bc of a walkoff win (#25 of 87 on the year) via a single or sac fly. Watched the US game today with my nieces and man was it tough to stomach. Brazil was so pathetic I couldn't believe it. Man is Wambach a clutch player, not to mention ballsy. She just attacked that pass with both a defender and goalie coming right at her. Insane finish and almost made the game tolerable in the end. Up until now the diving was MUCH better in the women's game, but man did this game kill that notion. Great comeback win though for a team up against it playing one person down and against the refs.

Everton: Mucha, Neville, Baines, Heitinga, Jagielka, Coleman, Bilyaletdinov, Gueye, Arteta, Beckford, Cahill
I know Heitinga of Everton was red-carded late after the goal. Two yellows, and he fucking flipped his lid and was trying to get on the pitch after the final whistle to jaw at the ref.
I know for a fact that Howard wasn't playing (he was on vacation) but the Union wasn't playing a full side either - it was hot as balls at PPL tonight and the average age of the starting 11 was 23.

wow im actually surprised. Mucha is the backup goalkeeper and a complete fuckin bum, as evidenced by the fact he didnt play 1 minute last year despite tim howard sucking balls for 30 of the 38 games. So that explains alot. However, Neville, Baines, Jagielka, Arteta and Cahill are all regular starters, and Beckford is basically a starter, since he plays more than any other striker. Heitinga, Coleman and Bilyaletinov are also regular players who occasionally start. Though Bilyaletinov is a lazy cock who they are tryin to sell and no one wants. They had their 3 best players on the field (baines, Arteta and Jagielka, i dont count cahill til he shows he is passed this plantar faciatis).
And Gueye is like 20 but he saw significant time last year due to injuries and seems to be a big part of the future plans along with Jack Rodwell. Coleman should be but they are hinting at selling him to get another striker

Klinsmann it is.
Here's what I can't understand:
Confed Cup, US up 2 on Brazil... lose.
World Cup, US ties ENG on luck, Beats ALG on luck, loses to Ghana... and Bradley is given an extension? Why?
Gold Cup, up 2, again... lose.
And the Men's team is on the hook to pay Bradley though the next few years, when everyone wants Klinsmann in the first place.
This is gonna be a battle of the wills between Sunil and Klinsmann.

Plus you need a good manager to spot the young guys to replace our aging players

Its probably best for Klinsmann that this deal didn't happen a few years ago like was rumoured. Now he'll have the benefit of the shift in youth participation while he builds the USA Soccer program the right way.

I created a group on the EPL page. Its a cool system based on points and you manage the team each week. Points are assigned to each player and you have to manage a bucket of 100points.

I have established the, Ron and Fez English Premier League Fantasy Football League. That's right, its so badass, I had to use the word, 'League' twice.
To sign up for the League, follow these steps:
Navigate to the EPL website at: http://www.premierleague.com/page/Home
On the right-center of the home page, you will see the 'fantasy' tab.
If you are not yet registered, go ahead and do so.
After you register, you can create your team. its simple and fun to manage your points in order to get the best team.
Once you are complete with the steps of signing up and selecting your team, favorite clubs, etc...you can join a public or private league. In order to join a Private league, you will need the join code.
The join code for the 'RON and FEZ' League is:
575124-151919
The season will be upon us soon----sign on up.
To test the join feature, I actually signed up twice, sorry. I am both Teebone and EnobeeT.
With all the transfers and lead up games played in the States and around the globe, this is shaping up to be another great campaign for all the clubs and once again affirms why the EPL is the one true league among them all.

Ha, you'll be fucked this season. They changed a little.
Q. What if I forget to enter my predictions?
A.The system will automatically enter values for any predictions that you have missed based on the league positions of the relevant teams. If you do not enter any predictions for 3 consecutive weeks the system will cease to enter any predictions and you will score 0 points for each fixture until you start playing the game again.

Sirius XM Beefs Up Soccer Coverage With TalkSport
Are you ready for some football? No, not American football…English football. Sirius XM’s live play-by-play coverage of English Premier League soccer season kicks off Saturday with Newcastle v. Arsenal. If that is not enough to wet your proverbial soccer whistle, consider this… Sirius XM Radio announced that it is adding programs from talkSPORT, the award-winning radio network from the UK, to its soccer programming lineup.
The talkSPORT shows will debut on Sirius ch. 92 and XM ch. 207 this Saturday, August 13, which just so happens to be the first day of the 2011-12 Barclays English Premier League season. This new talk programming, hosted by some of the UK’s best radio hosts and former athletes, demonstrates the depth of content available on satellite radio. Further it is yet another differentiator between Sirius XM and services like MOG, Pandora, Spotify, and Slacker.
Sirius XM’s English Premiere League season kicks off with Saturday’s Newcastle United v. Arsenal match, which can be heard live at 12:30 pm ET. Sunday’s schedule will feature Stoke City v. Chelsea at 8:30 am ET and West Bromwich v. Manchester United at 11:00 am ET. English Premiere League matches will air throughout the season on Sirius ch. 92 and XM ch. 207. For a schedule of upcoming matches visit www.siriusxm.com/soccer
“The addition of talkSPORT programming is a terrific enhancement to our lineup and offers a higher level of access for U.S.-based soccer fans,” said Steve Cohen, SiriusXM’s SVP of Sports Programming. “In addition to live Premier League matches, our listeners will now get some of the UK’s best sports talk.”
Before and after all English Premiere League matches and throughout the week, Sirius XM will present several talkSPORT programs which promise to feature engaging analysis of the world’s most popular game, plus coverage of rugby, cricket, boxing and more.

DC United played the Union at PPL tonight, the Sons of Ben unleashed probably the most offensive tifo ever.
It was basically a car-shaped tifo with "CD9" on it. It started from the the side of the River End, "swerving" all over the crowd, moving to the middle of the stands and then "crashing" into a smoke bomb at the middle of the stands.
BTW, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was in TRE tonight too. Good times.

according to espn:
FIFA cashed in on a $1.2 billion bonanza from United States broadcasters Friday, striking World Cup deals with Fox, Telemundo and Spanish language radio.
Fox won the English-language U.S. television rights for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, outbidding incumbent ESPN and NBC for soccer's showpiece tournament.
Fox agreed to pay around $425 million for the two-tournament package, a person familiar with the bidding told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the figure was not made public. It also secured English-language radio rights.
ESPN and Univision paid a combined $425 million for the existing deal.

It all depends on how many households will have FOX Soccer and FOX Soccer+ in 7 years.
Right now, ESPN and ESPN2 carry the matches, with ABC getting 2 weekend games plus US matches.
I would bet that when 2018 arrives, FOX soccer and either FX or FOX Sports regionals will get the majority of games, while FOX will get US and a Saturday/Sunday match.
Time differences will also be a big factor. Pretty sure 2018 and 2022 will have middle of the night game starts here in the US.

it was actually a way better game that that too. city was up 1-0 early in the 2nd when Evans got sent off on a red card. By the 75th minute it was still 3-1 and then United just ran outta gas and City showed what all that money can buy. They looked fuckin unstoppable attacking the goal. I'm such a horrible fan. I was out all day and had no idea the game was yesterday. I thought it was supposed to be on today. Had I known I at least would've set my DVR to record it.
I do know their next game is the 15th. That one I will watch.

Hey, you know how we were assured that holding the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 wouldn't be a problem, even though at the time the games would be played the temperatures could be well over 120 degrees Fahrenheit, because they'd have these ultra-futuristic air-conditioned stadia?
Not so much.
John Barrow of Populous, the company which is designing the Sports City stadium in the capital Doha, says that air-conditioning on such a scale is ‘notoriously unsustainable.’
‘We are doing away with all the air conditioning kit that is going to cost a fortune to run,’ Mr Barrow has told delegates at the International Football Arena conference in Zurich.
‘I think you can be more clever.
‘It is about air movement, moisture in the air and it is about the temperature at the right time of day.’

Yeah, a couple of fans and an occasional spray of water's gonna make it feel comfortable when it's 125 degrees.
FIFA is a fucking joke. Easily the most corrupt organization in sports today.

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter says there is no racism in soccer.
"There is no racism, there is maybe one of the players towards the other, he has a word or a gesture which is not the correct one, but also the one who is affected by that, he should say it's a game, we are in a game.
"At the end of the game, we shake hands, this can happen, because we have worked so hard against racism and discrimination."
Someone on the other team called you a "nigger" during the game? It's just part of the game! Shake his hand afterward!
FIFA is a total joke run by a clown.

Landon Donovan is going back to Everton on an 8 week loan starting in January. He did surprisingly well the last time he played for them. I just wish he'd play there longer, but he's devoted to playing for the LA Galaxy in MLS.

his post says nothing of season starting in march and i dont pay attention to mls so i had no clue it started in march
i just assumed he meant the team in general
didnt the galaxy just play in the mls championship ? based on that i figured it'd be awhile before the new season started again
