View Full Version : Knowing the difference between further and farther pisses the hell out of me

I never knew the difference until recently, sort of, I knew the difference but never paid attention to it or realized when people were using it wrong. The wife, who was an English major, yelled at me for about a month until it was drilled into my head..
FARTHER denotes physical advancement in distance.
FURTHER denotes advancement to greater degree, as in time or concept.
Shit.
I hear it constantly now, everyone uses them wrong. Everyone loves to use further and I even catch myself doing it. It's so fucking annoying.
Life was easier when I had no concept about the difference and didn't care or notice when people used them wrong.

I feel your pain. Everytime someone uses "less" instead of "fewer" I die a little inside.
less-to describe something that can't be individuallly counted, i.e. less cheese
fewer- to describe something that can be counted, i.e. fewer calories
*edit* I've typed this before I think. It must've already been a thread.

I'm in a very database heavy environment and I get that way with data/datum but I understand I've lost to popular usage, seems like you're going to as well.
