View Full Version : UPDATE: I didn't stare down the barrel of a gun tonight.

Because he held it low. I looked more at the top of it.
I was delivering pizza tonight. There's a spot by the side of the building where all the drivers like to park, because it's close to the door. As I'm pulling into the spot, I see a guy walking toward me (he's on the side of the building where only I can see him), and he's holding an iPhone and waving it at me. As I get out, he asks if anyone dropped it. I asked what kind it was. He said it was an iPhone. I asked where he picked it up. He pulled out a gun (I think it was a .380) and said, "Give me everything!"
I've had a gun pulled on me before. It was when I was in the Navy. Me and a buddy were drunk, and this guy is messing with us on the street. He pulls a gun on us. We beat the shit out of him. Turns out, he was a University cop who thought we were drug dealers. He got fired.
This time I didn't jump the guy. I thought about what I was going to do for about 1 millionth of a second, and just said "no", and ran. I ran parallel to the front of the store, kind of weaving, so I'd make a tougher target to hit. I looked back, and he had stepped forward and once again yelled "Give me everything".
I turned and headed to the door of our shop. The only thought on my mind was "I wish the door pushed open instead of pulled". As I grabbed the phone to dial 911, I see him running away. The cops were in the area quickly. One cop questioned two guys on the street, and they took off running.
He saw what house they went into. The home owner wasn't there, and these kids just didn't answer the door. The cops came and got me. As I sat in the cop car, I could see that they had the TV on inside. I once saw one of them at the front door. The mom was on the way, but it took her about 45 minutes. The cops said, they knew the family and didn't have much hope that she'd let them in. They'd get a warrant, if she didn't.
She eventually did let them in. A cop paraded the guy past the car I was in. The shithead looked right at me. I'm glad he did, because that's when I was positive it was the guy. He's about 18 and already had other warrants on him.
I'm going to drink now.

One, we were where no one could see us. It would have been up to him, if he shoots me after I give him the money. Two, the longer I'm standing in front of him with that gun pointed at my belly, the longer he has to decide to shoot me, or just fuck up and pull the trigger. Three, I knew he wouldn't expect it. And I was right. He looked shocked as shit.

I'm sure it's rough to go through something like that. I used to deliver sandwiches, and there were times where I thought I was going to get held up, but luckily I never did. One time I caught some kids stealing cds from my car when I came back from delivering in a mall. I was furious, but I can't imagine having a gun pulled.
You did the right thing; the hero shit rarely turns out well. And bonus points for being willing to ID the scumbag and presumably sign an affidavit as to what happened. Nothing is more frustrating for law enforcement than a victim that is scared to testify.
Take it easy. You may have nightmares for a while, and if you have a hard time getting over this incident, try to get a little help.

Nevermind Dolamight. He's a fucking idiot.
No. Actually I've been in the same situation so if you are carrying cash in a dangerous place, and apparently $50 is enough to kill a guy these days, get a gun permit to carry and if someone, other than a law enforcement officer, points a gun at you, shoot them in the face. NQA Or, find another line of work. Cable installation perhaps. Last time I checked, it is legal to protect your life and your personal property.
I found another line of work.

This is one of those situations where I might think youre a nut, but only because you reacted 100% differently from how Id probably react. Luckily Ive never been in that situation but I think Id hand over everything. I just dont care enough about anything (money/pride/workplace status) to risk death. Im perfectly comfortable with my cowardice. I am glad they got the idiot and that it ended the way it did. Drink up, Papa.

Like I said, before... The longer I stood in front of this guy, the more chances he had to pull the trigger and get away without anyone seeing a thing. If someone were to come into the shop and demand money, the wise choice would be to hand it over. Standing in a dark area alone, the best choice is to just get the fuck out of there. However, if I had been in the middle of nowhere (instead of 15-20 feet from the front door of the shop), I might have handed the money over.
BTW... This type of crime has been on the rise in a huge way around here. In every other case, people handed over the money, and the perps got away. I was able to call 911 while the guy was still in sight. In all of the other cases, the cops weren't called until long after they had gotten away.
It was just the right set of circumstances for this particular incident. I obviously didn't think through all of the possible outcomes as I reacted. But my instincts were right for this case.
That's why I mentioned the other gun case in my first post. Every situation is different.

Right on man. You obviously made the right decision in this case because you managed to achieve the best possible outcome. No loss of goods, no bodily harm and an arrest. I see what youre saying. Sometimes full compliance with the assailant can be more dangerous.

That is some scary shit! And thankful you're OK :)
Never had a felon lay a bead on me (a pair of cops did once) but have had a knife pulled once. A co-worker and I were walking back to my truck after dinner a few winters ago and some little piece of shit steps out from an alley and demands our wallets. Tell him to go fuck his hat and he pulls a kitchen knife from his waistband. Holds it out like he's offering it to me and says again he wants my wallet. He's closer then he should be and I reach into my jacket as if to get my wallet while telling him to chill and he's going to get my cash. Instead of my wallet I just take out an empty hand and as quick as I can drill my knuckles into his throat. He drops the knife and I put everything into an overhand punch to the right side of his head. He weighed at most 160 and at the time was a good 230 so tagged him but good. While he's on the ground I drop and lay a knee to the back of his neck and tell my co-worker to call 911. Since it was downtown and in one of our entertainment districts the cops were there in ~5 minutes but the whole time the little fuck is whining about how he's cold (he was laying in snow) and that I was hurting his neck. Once the cops got things straightened out and had him in custody, statements were given, etc. I got the lecture about how I should have just handed over my wallet. Ya, probably the wiser thing to do but at the time I did what I did. Managed to keep things together the whole time until about an hour later on the drive home. Just started to shake.....pulled over and had thought about what could have happened till I got my shit back together and that was it. No nightmares, etc. (although I did call in sick for a couple of days and went skiing).
He was charged, went to court, found guilty and spent all of three months in the klink (useless legal system).

Glad you didn't get hurt. Young criminals arent smart. I lived 2 doors down from this family with a bunch of delinquent kids. Two of them stuck up the Pizza Hut that was 1 block over and 2 blocks up. It was a place they were customers, and staffed by kids that went to their high school.
Later they set fire to their house getting stoned on the couch.

Might as well update. Looks like the other kid is talking. He obviously has admitted they are the ones, because he claims it was a fake gun.
According to the search warrant, the other teen told police that the suspect had used a plastic toy gun in the robbery, and had hidden it in a closet of the house where they were hiding.
According to the warrant, police recovered it in the house, though it was broken.
Since the robber is a juvenile, the case goes much faster than regular ones. When my daughter got jumped last summer, it took over 6 months for it to get settled. My case is already going to trial on the 17th of this month! Hopefully, since the other kid is talking, he'll plead guilty. I'd much prefer that, over having to testify.
Oh, yeah... Turns out two of my coworkers know him. They were shocked to hear he was the one who did it. I'm getting sick of hearing them say "But he's such a nice guy!"

Funny. Last week, my daughter had to attend a hearing against the kids that jumped her last summer. When it was all over, the prosecutor overheard us talking about my case. He asked me what case I was talking about. I said, "The armed robbery... Saturday... " He said, "So you're..." I told him my name. He smiled and shook his head in astonishment. I said, "Yeah. We're a FAMILY of victims!"

Now you're thinking! If the guy comes after you, you can use Sailor as a human shield. Brilliant.

You need to go Charles Bronson on those fucking punks.
Ah, who am I kidding, the most you could hope to do is go Jodie Foster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brave_One_%282007_film%29) on them.

I just know I'm calling the prosecutor on Tuesday to find out what the deal is. Last thing he told me was the guy was being investigated for multiple other robberies.

Maybe he turned 18 and got released? Isn't that a thing?

No. He turned 18 right after he tried to rob me I think. And the prosecutor said he wouldn't be getting out this year.

What I still don't understand is why you thought it would be a good idea to go over and have a chat with some fucking teenage hoodlum (let alone one of them) in a dark alley in the middle of the night!

He walked up to me as I was getting out of my car. But I haven't parked in that spot since that night.

This is just great! As I said earlier, the kid ended up only serving a few months. He was forced to write me a letter of apology in which he said he had been hanging out with the wrong people, and was going to become a better person.
In today's paper, there's a story about a guy who woke up to someone choking him. While a guy choked him, the chick he was with stole all his money. The victim knew them. They had come home with him from a party. He identified the choker as (who else) the guy who tried to rob me two years ago.
Stupidity runs in his family, btw... A few months ago, someone had been robbing convenience stores on a fairly regular basis. In the last one, the clerk swung a broom at the guy. He took the broom from the clerk and ran out with it. Later, the cops were searching the home of my perp's brother on an unrelated warrant. He lived two blocks from the last store to be robbed. The idiot had the broom from the last robbery in his room. Right next to the hoodie that he wore.

I would have wiped my ass with that letter and then returned it to him.
